Abstract

This study is conducted to reveal the masculine qualities stereotyped on 9GAG by 9GAG users. There are two main theories used in analyzing this study, gender stereotype and denotation & connotation. (). First, the gender stereotype concepts used are from Brannon (2004) and Wood (2008). The first part of the study discusses 9GAG popular posts which content subtly contains of Alpha Male qualities. The result is the users show preferences on conventional masculine qualities. The second part of the study discusses 9GAG popular posts which content subtly contains of Beta Male qualities. The result is there are some specific feminine or Beta Male sides 9GAG users accept in men. In conclusion, 9GAG users still focus more on masculine qualities, especially masculine physical features, in men. Feminine qualities in men can be accepted by the community if men possess the conventional masculine physical features first.

Abstract

Marital pressure is one of many cultural problems still existing in Indonesia. Research has shown that Indonesians tend to push individuals to get married as an act of conforming to the cultural dominion. This happens because being unmarried is seen as problematic or uncommon. Worst of all, most Indonesians tend to use the existence of marriage as a standard for value and happiness. This negative belief against unmarried individuals is known as singlism. It includes the act of discriminating, stigmatising, and stereotyping singles. Acknowledging this problem, the writer used the theory of Singlism and the Transactional Theory of Stress and Coping to help create a creative thesis in the form of a satirical novel. This creative thesis aims to show that happiness and value cannot be based on marriage. In the end, this creative thesis managed to show that marriage does not always guarantee happiness and life fulfilment.

Abstract

My screenplay Beautiful Nightmares is the story of Lara, a singer and Ayunindya, the assistant manager who both struggling with their self-esteem. Using crime as the genre of my story and Film Noir as the subgenre, I look into the worst nightmare of two persons with low self-esteem can bring to someone else.  The main idea of my creative writing focuses on the causes and effects of low self-esteem, I also deal with the roles of family and friends in influencing someone value of him or herself. However I believe low self-esteem can cause a big nuisance, especially when it comes to anxiety, obsession, violence and ended up with criminal behavior. To help me creating this screenplay, I use the theory of The Looking Glass Self by Charles Horton Cooley, theory of Self-Esteem and Adolescent by Morris Rosenberg, the theory of possession by L. Firestone, and Rosenbaum and DeCharms’ theory of criminal behavior on someone with a low self-esteem. Later in the story it reveals how Lara and Ayunindya’s self-esteem are influenced by their family and friends. Furthermore, they ended up committing murder.Keyword: Low Self-Esteem, Possession, Criminal behavior.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the perceptions of the male and female students of Petra Christian University toward the language used in a three-star hotel website in Surabaya and toward the hotel itself. I want to know if the perceptions toward the language will influence the perceptions toward the hotel which writes the website. The respondents of this study are 30 male and 30 female students of Petra Christian University. Here, there are some similarities and differences found between the male and female students’ perceptions toward the language used in a three-star hotel website in Surabaya and toward the hotel itself. It seems that the female students usually see language as one important way to know the hotel. On the other hand, it seems that the male students do not really care about what kind of language that is used in a hotel website

Abstract

This article aims to discuss about the topic of discrimination and elaborate it through the form of a creative novel. Three topics are explored: the reasons for discrimination, how discrimination can continue to perpetuate, and how indirect discrimination can also hurt victims. These questions are answered in the narrative story in a novel with the help of the Social Dominance theory and Becker’s theory of Economic Discrimination. Sapphire is a fire-wielding mermaid who is discriminated against because of her power over fire. She finds out that discrimination can exist because the dominant group does not want to lose their privileges, and how discrimination still runs rampant because of the propaganda spread by the king, which is supported using the legalizing myths in Social Dominance theory. Sapphire also witnesses and suffers some indirect forms of discrimination, especially about lack of interaction and wage differences. Keywords: discrimination, indirect discrimination, social dominance, economic discrimination, fantasy, merfolk

Abstract

This study deals with the politeness strategies used in Gung Ho movie between Hunt and Kazihiro by focusing on the Scollon & Scollon (2001) theory. This research is aimed to find out the types of strategies have been used by Hunt to Kazihiro, Kazihiro to Hunt, and the types politeness strategies mostly used by Hunt and Kazihiro. This research uses descriptive quantitative method. After analyzing the data using Scollon & Scollon theory (2001), there are 34 strategies (25 involvement and 9 independence strategies) have been found in the data analysis. In terms of involvement strategies, both characters made “notice to the hearer’s (interests, wants, needs, and goods)” strategy the most. It is possible because both of them try to build a good relationship by paying attention or notice to each other’s condition since they are from different culture (American and Japanese).

Abstract

This paper is about a project on a screenplay. In my screenplay, I talk about a girl from Java who has to work in remote area in Papua Island. The girl is a volunteer teacher who has to survive to teach the students who are very different from students in Java. To develop the screenplay, I used two theories, namely culture shock and maturation. I use these two theories  because in the main character experiences  culture shock and maturation whe she does her voluntary teaching in Papua. To collect data, I use survey to Eranotali, Papua and libary research on Papua and its cultures. I find the theories and survey as well as libary research help me during the creative process. The theories help me develop realistic characters; while the survey and library research help me picture Eranotali as realistic as possible.   I believe that when the screenplay is made into film, the audience will get the feel of Enarotali and ‘experience’ the main character’s jurney

That is the reason why I wanted to focus on the main characters named Moana and Merida who have the other side of a princess usually. This thesis talks about the issue of how the characters of Moana and Merida reflect the characteristics of girl power. The thesis aims to show that Moana and Merida can reflect the characteristics of Girl power through their decisiveness, smartness and boldness. In this study, I used girl power theory that Rebecca Walker as pioneer of the third-wave pioneer. As a result, I have found that Moana and Merida reflected the characteristics of Girl power that made them show a new side of the characteristics of a princess that is usually displayed by Disney. Keywords: Disney, Girl Power, decisiveness, smartness, boldness

Abstract

This final project is based on the writer’s internship in ABC Elementary School from March 12th to June 8th, 2018. The writer thought that it was a good solution to make and provide posters as the final project because of the problem she found during her internship in ABC Elementary School, that is, students’ lack of English vocabulary. The students seemed they did not want to participate in the English learning because the English book used in class was quite difficult for grade one students. The writer created posters to provide the students learning tools so that the students can follow and participate the teaching-learning process actively. By having interesting posters with their uniqueness (3D poster, removable poster, and etcetera), the students are expected to feel more interested in knowing and learning English vocabulary. These posters can help to support the teaching-learning process. Keywords: Posters, 3D Poster, English Vocabulary, Project
