Abstract

This journal reveals Separation Anxiety Disorder (SAD) symptoms that may appear during childhood as well as ways children could cope with it in children picture books using realistic fiction as genre and first person point of view.  All characters in five stories experience SAD’s symptoms such as irrational worries that something bad will happen to them or to their attachment figures, excessive distress, difficulty sleeping alone, school refusal and even physical complaints such as nausea, headaches and stomachaches caused by unfortunate life events such as loss of loved ones, parental separation or divorce and economic hardships. This journal shows possible ways children may be able to face challenges and overcome their symptoms proactively by using self-directed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) such as identifying thought patterns, breaking through negative thoughts, facing fear and putting it all together.

Abstract

Crazy Rich Asians is one of the movies that is adapted from literature. In this thesis I am analyzing this movie because of the depiction of a rich person, Eleanor Young, who has an underlying inferiority.  However, she shows that she has a superiority over others to cover inferiority. Therefore, in this thesis I am interested in analyzing the superiority complex that was portrayed by Eleanor in the movie and the impact for other characters. In the analysis I use Alfred Adler’s theory of superiority complex. The findings show that Eleanor's superiority complex is shown through her action and behavior, her speech, and her characteristic traits. Her superiority complex affects other characters, who are Nick and Rachel. As a result, Eleanor does not have a good relationship with Nick and Rachel and she portrays her superiority complex.

Abstract

This study focuses on the features of interactional styles used by Ray Kroc, the male main character, when in a business conversation with others in The Founder biographical movie. The writer used Holmes’ (2006) theory of features of interactional styles and Holmes' (2006), Kuntjara's (2012), and Paltridge's (2006) theory of gender to support her in conducting this research. The writer transcribed and analyzed Ray Kroc's utterances during business conversations with others for this study, which took a qualitative approach. Facilitative, supportive feedback, conciliatory, indirect, collaborative, person/process-oriented, and affectively oriented are all features of feminine interactional styles used by Ray Kroc. He also demonstrated all masculine interactional styles features, including competitive, aggressive interruptions, confrontational, direct, autonomous, task/outcome-oriented, and referentially oriented. The findings of this study support Holmes' (2006) observation that men and women can use both feminine and masculine interactional styles depending on the situation in the workplace. Ray Kroc, a competitive and masculine man, used feminine and masculine interactional styles to keep his relationships with his partners strong and achieve his business conversation goals at the same time. Moreover, further research for the film The Founder or other movie that focuses on other characters, situations, and theories is recommended.

Abstract

Video commercials are an essential tool in advertising nowadays. Many Products right now use video commercials as their main tool to advertise their product; cigarettes are not an exception. However, since they cannot display the products in the commercials due to the rules in Indonesia, cigarette companies use creative methods to advertise their product. Instead, the companies use verbal, visual and gestural expressions to deliver the messages of what the companies want to say. In this thesis, I aim to discover how social criticism of the anti-social behavior of Indonesian people is portrayed through verbal, visual and gestural expressions in A mild video commercials. I used Multimodal Discourse Analysis, social criticism, and anti-social behavior theory to help analyze the data. Next, I analyze each piece of data in accordance with each mode and connect it with the social criticism message. Based on my analysis, I found out that the message of the social criticism in the video commercials can be seen through the linguistic mode, visual mode, and gestural mode. In conclusion, using social criticism in video commercials is an effective way for companies to give messages to viewers.

Abstract

Manga is a Japanese comic that has its own genres, one of the most famous is shōnen. Attack on Titan is one of the most popular shōnen manga in the world, with a science fiction theme. Through this study, we want to analyze the dehumanization in the manga series by Hajime Isayama. We want to find out what forms of dehumanization occur and the reasons why the dehumanization happens to the victims, the Eldians. We use the theory of animalistic and mechanistic dehumanization to identify the forms of dehumanization in the manga. In addition, we also use the theory that state power increases dehumanization to find out the reasons that dehumanization happens. Based on our analysis results, victims treated like animals do not have human rights, are considered low class, and get persecuted. Victims treated like objects are considered "tools" to achieve goals, something that can be exchanged or destroyed, and ignores the victim's feelings. Meanwhile, the Eldians get dehumanized because they feel powerless and are considered a potential threat by the dehumanizers. It shows that dehumanization is a negative phenomenon that occurs due to differences.

Songs are short piece of music with word that are sung (Cambridge Dictionary) or in Bahasa Indonesia we can call it "Nyanyian" or "Lagu". A Million of Indonesia's good songs still need to be explored because they are worth being known by more Indonesians and also people from all around the world. In this paper, I collected, translated, and analyzed the ten Indonesian Pop Songs. The analysis of the translation is important to help me as the translator of those songs, to be better by assessing it and it could be an example for others to do this good little movement. The purpose of the study is first, to analyze the Accuracy of the ten songs translation and also to analyze the Acceptability of the ten songs translation. In this study, my songs translation shows the level of Accuracy and Acceptability aspect which are connected with the theory I used in this paper. I used the theory from Mona Baker's (2018), Equivalence at Word Level. There are two main types of meaning in words and utterances that I used; Propositional Meaning for the Accuracy analysis and Expressive Meaning for the Acceptability analysis.

Abstract

Good quality education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their economic status. Unfortunately, often better education in Indonesia comes with a heavy price tag that eliminates working class people from accessing it. This thesis attempts to find out why the working class people are economically discriminated and how they face the discrimination. Using screenplay and young adult dystopian genre, this thesis tries to show the side effects of said economic inequality if taken to the extreme. With Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of school as cultural reproduction, the working class students, including the protagonist Thalia, are discriminated against because they are seen as threats to their resources. To reciprocate, Thalia challenges the system, which sparks a rebellion inside the school. The worldbuilding aspect of the genre is based on Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of social space, capitals, and agency. Thalia from the working class utilizes her agency to face the discrimination.

It tells the story of a woman who works in a beauty company who gets different treatment because her appearance does not meet beauty standards. This research was conducted to reveal how society's attitude treats women who do not comply with beauty standards and to find out Rara's reasons for refusing to follow the beauty standards set by society. This study uses the theory of lookism and sizeism. Where patriarchal values have internalized women to participate in discriminating against Rara or women who do not follow beauty standards. After following the beauty standards, Rara feels uncomfortable and conflicts often occur between her and those closest to her. Rara decides to refuse to follow the standard of beauty that has been set by society with self-acceptance and seeks her happiness.
