Abstract

Islamic Sundanese manuscripts are part of Nusantara manuscripts. Among the manuscripts that describe the history of prominent religious figures in the era of Prophet Muhammad is a manuscript of Kitab Carita Anis Sahabat Rasulullah (KCASR). The manuscript depicts two Prophet Muhammad’s companions with contradictory characters of greediness and selfishness, on the one hand, and of humbleness and piety, on the other. Abstract

The title of the manuscript, Manasik Hajj, is newly made, because the author does not mention it in the text. The title is made in accordance with the content of the text describing the guidance and instructions in performing the hajj pilgrimage. The manuscript is owned by Undang Darsa as a legacy from his ancestors. In the context of manuals for the hajj rituals, the manuscript Manasik Haji is unique because it provides Sufistic dimension on each phase of the pilgrimage. In general, however, the content of the manuscript has similarities with that of the fiqh books which explain the hajj rituals and are commonly used as manuals by the pilgrims.

Abstract

New media affects fundamental changes in religious life. The change was apparent in the shift from traditional religious authorities, such as ulama (clergy), murshid, religious teachers or ustad, government, and non-governmental organizations, to modern religious authorities. With the waning of traditional religious authority, due to the development of information technology of new media, religious authorities are now in the hand of impersonal media, such as books, websites, blogs, and the like. New media has created new social environments that facilitate spiritual interaction, create new authorities and legitimize actions of the religious community. Progressiveness and openness of new media has driven the acceleration process of “rejuvenation of ulama”.

Abstract

This paper discusses Tarekat Naqsyabandiyah (manuscript on the Naqsyabandiyah Sufi order) in Minangkabau, West Sumatera. In addition to describe the physical aspect of the manuscript, this paper discusses the contents of the manuscript concerning the doctrines of Sufism, such as the method of ©ikr (remembering God’s name with chanting special formula), tawhīd (Islamic monotheism) and the relationship between syari‘ah, tarekat, hakikat and makrifat. The paper also discusses social, cultural and religious aspects of the manuscript. In this context, the author shows rivalry between the Naqsyabandiyah and Syattariyah sufi orders, when the former criticized the latter on the doctrine of the martabat tujuh (seven stages).

Abstract

The article examines a manuscript entitled Kitab al-Nikah (KN) written by Abu 'Abd Allah al-Husayn ibn Ahmad al-Mahfani, a writer who is assumed to be from Jawi land (Nusantara). KN is a digest book of marriage law according to the Syafi’i school. The explanation and sentences used in this manuscript refer to the major sources of the Syafi’i school literature. What is quite uniqe of are as follow: first, unlike the majority of the digest literature of law, KN provides legal basis that come from al-Qur’an and hadis upon certain rules of marriage law. Second, KN employs an approach of comparative law, particularly with Abu Hanifah and Malik schools. This is certaintly uncommon for a digest book. Third, KN provides important additional information on Islamic basis of morality such as its reference to the principle of prudence and wara’, and its emphasis on the principle of no-harm and good relationship between husband and wife, something rarely found in the classical fiqh literature.
