Abstract

The jeguran tradition is one of the cultural practices of the Javanese community in the pesarean pond of Kajen Village, Pati Regency. Although wrapped in local traditions, there are Islamic values in it, especially the value of monotheism. This study aims to reveal the meaning and values of monotheism contained in the jeguran tradition and explain how the jeguran tradition becomes a means of conveying Islamic teachings to the community with a cultural approach. The method used is qualitative with a case study approach. Data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews with community leaders, and participants in the jeguran activities. The results of the study show that the jeguran tradition contains monotheism values that are reflected as a form of the oneness of Allah through prayer and intentions that are said, influencing a person's life, physical and spiritual cleansing, an attitude of surrender and trusting completely to Allah. This tradition is an effective cultural da'wah media in spreading the teachings of monotheism in a society that is still strong with Javanese cultural values so that local traditions can be a strategic media in conveying Islamic values, especially monotheism without eliminating local wisdom.

Abstract

This study examines the Manten Tebu tradition at Gempolkerep Sugar Factory, Mojokerto, as a cultural expression and a medium for fostering social synergy that plays a vital role in sustaining sugar production and achieving national self-sufficiency. The research aims to understand the symbolic meanings of the ritual procession and analyze its role in strengthening the relationship between sugarcane farmers and the sugar factory. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were obtained through in-depth interviews, documentation, and participant observation, then analyzed using thematic analysis. Symbolic interactionism theory was applied to interpret how cultural meanings are constructed through social interaction. The findings reveal that elements such as the “bride and groom” sugarcane, ritual offerings, and the ceremonial parade carry collective symbols reflecting hopes for harmonious cooperation, shared prosperity, and abundant harvests. Collective participation, including communal meals without hierarchical divisions, reinforces social solidarity and emotional bonds. In conclusion, Manten Tebu is a living cultural asset that not only preserves local wisdom but also strengthens social networks, enhances work ethics, and promotes productivity in the sugar sector amid modernization challenges.

Abstract

This article aims to criticize Joko Widodo's efforts, when he was still President of the Republic of Indonesia, to eliminate the opposition from Indonesia from the perspective of democracy according to Cak Nur's view. This study uses a literature study, namely by collecting data from various journals, books, including several news items related to the theme of the article. The results of this study indicate that Jokowi's decision to fatten his coalition is an attempt to eliminate the opposition in Indonesia. This policy has a negative impact on the sustainability of democracy in Indonesia. This is reinforced by Cak Nur's view of the importance of the opposition for a democratic country like Indonesia. Cak Nur believes that the opposition plays a role in maintaining the stability of a nation. Therefore, the opposition cannot be eliminated with any argument. During his administration, Jokowi tried to eliminate the opposition in Indonesia because he actually did not understand the basic principles of democracy and tended to want to strengthen his dominance in the seat of power. Jokowi's fat coalition is a decision that endangers the sustainability of democracy in this country, because the vital functions of the opposition cannot be carried out.

Abstract

Indonesia has extensive ethnic and biological diversity, which presents unique challenges in the application of age estimation methods, particularly within the context of forensic anthropology. This study aims to review various age estimation methods that have been used in Indonesia over the past ten years, including approaches based on teeth, bones, skulls, and bone histology. Each method is analyzed to the Indonesian population. The findings show that dental methods such as Demirjian, Willems, and the Indonesian Dental Development Atlas are fairly accurate for children and adolescents, although they exhibit ethnic and gender biases. For adult populations, approaches involving bone and skull analysis are more effective, while bone histology methods are suitable for fragmented remains, despite being invasive. Furthermore, the use of artificial intelligence technologies shows significant potential in improving estimation accuracy, although it still requires representative local datasets. This review highlights the importance of adapting methods to the characteristics of the Indonesian population and the need to develop local standards to support a more accurate and equitable forensic identification process.

Abstract

The Hahi dance ritual of the Hulaliu indigenous community in Haruku Island, Central Maluku, is a collective rite rich in bodily, spatial, and spiritual symbolism. This study aims to analyze the structure of the Hahi ritual through Victor Turner’s theory of liminality and to explore how ritual symbolism shapes and reinforces social identity and soa-based structures. Using a qualitative approach with content analysis, data were collected through literature review and in-depth interviews with traditional figures. The findings reveal that the Hahi ritual consists of three stages—pre-liminal, liminal, and post-liminal—conducted collectively by the entire community. The liminal stage creates a sense of communitas by temporarily dissolving social hierarchies, thus reinforcing solidarity and ancestral values. Symbols such as body movement, tifa rhythm, ceremonial colors, and sacred spaces like Baileo function as complex mediums of spiritual and social communication. This study concludes that Hahi represents a cyclical and communal liminal experience, serving not only as cultural preservation but also as a form of resistance against modern pressures. It is best understood as a rite of intensification that regenerates social order and sustains collective memory within the indigenous context.

Abstract

Tri Hita Karana as a harmonious value of human life with God (Parahyangan), fellow humans (Pawongan), and nature/the environment (Palemahan) is often neglected in practice, such as in Sulangai Village, Badung. Residents who routinely throw household waste into their backyards (teba) contribute to environmental pollution. Based on a social construction perspective, there is an inconsistency in the internalization of Tri Hita Karana values in society, whose daily lives touch and depend on nature/the environment. The results show that Tri Hita Karana has not yet become an implemented social reality, while the habit of throwing rubbish into teba has actually been maintained from generation to generation through a dialectical process of externalization-objectivation-internalization. This disparity indicates that the Tri Hita Karana values are less dominant due to entrenched social practices. Collaborative solutions involving residents, village officials, and traditional-religious leaders are needed to strengthen the internalization of Tri Hita Karana, changing teba from a trash can into an ecological space that is in line with Pateman principles. This research highlights the urgency of revitalizing local wisdom through a collective approach to overcoming environmental problems based on cultural values.

Abstract

As a multicultural nation, Indonesia holds an extensive and diverse cultural heritage, among which kebaya and jarik stand as profound representations of Indonesian women’s identity. Both have been officially recognized by UNESCO as elements of intangible cultural heritage. This study explores the preservation strategies of kebaya and jarik in Semarang City implemented by the Diajeng Semarang Community amidst the ongoing dynamics of modernization. Utilizing a qualitative approach with an ethnographic method, this research involved ten informants selected through purposive sampling, including community members and relevant stakeholders. The findings indicate that the Diajeng Semarang Community plays a pivotal role in sustaining the existence of kebaya and jarik through a range of creative initiatives such as social media campaigns, educational workshops, and collaborations with local designers, educational institutions, and government agencies. The study further demonstrates that the Diajeng Semarang Community has effectively positioned kebaya and jarik as cultural symbols that remain relevant within contemporary society. These findings underscore the dual function of cultural communities, not only as preservers of tradition but also as agents of social and cultural transformation. Consequently, the Diajeng Semarang Community serves as a concrete model of sustainable cultural preservation that bridges traditional values and modern practices.

Abstract

Serbat is a spiced beverage embedded in the daily life of the Malay community in Pontianak and is culturally understood to possess various health benefits. This study aims to describe the structural composition of serbat recipes, the community’s health-related interpretations, and their relationship to phytonutrient content through the perspectives of Ethno-Nutrition and Medical Ethnobiology. Through observations and in-depth interviews with six key informants, the study identifies that serbat consists of core ingredients—cloves, cinnamon, and cardamom—and a set of variable ingredients such as pandan leaves, sappan wood, nutmeg, star anise, anise seeds, and rosella, which reflect domestic adaptation. Emically, serbat is understood to serve four primary health functions: warming the body, sustaining stamina, alleviating leg discomfort, and providing digestive comfort. These interpretations correspond with the bioactive properties of the spices, including eugenol and cinnamaldehyde that produce warming effects, polyphenols and flavonoids that support energy metabolism, brazilin and myristicin with anti-inflammatory activity, and gastroprotective compounds found in cardamom, pandan, and anise. These findings demonstrate that serbat constitutes a biocultural product that bridges culinary tradition, sensory experience, and phytochemical mechanisms, thereby illustrating the continuity of traditional nutritional knowledge within the context of modern health practices.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of social interaction, its strategic role in the adaptation process, and map the coping strategies of migrant students in the digital era. Using the library research method with inclusion criteria for scientific manuscripts from the last 10 years, data were analyzed through comparative synthesis techniques to produce an up-to-date adaptation model. The study findings indicate that social interaction plays a multidimensional role that functions as a crucial coping mechanism in alleviating culture shock and mental isolation. Specifically, interaction has now transformed into the digital realm where social media serves as a "bridge" for emotional support while simultaneously posing a potential barrier to face-to-face interaction. Effective adaptation strategies were found in the combination of forming study groups, active involvement in campus organizations, and proportional management of social media usage. The success of migrant students' cultural integration is ultimately determined by the synergy between external social support and internal strengths in the form of an open attitude and self-reflection.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of gender-based social stratification in traditional Javanese culture, as well as the factors that cause it and its impact on Javanese society. This study focuses on how cultural values, social norms, and gender role constructions are passed down from generation to generation, which then form unbalanced patterns of relations between men and women. The method used is a literature study by reviewing relevant literature in the form of credible and relevant books, journals, and research reports, thereby obtaining a comprehensive understanding without collecting field data. The results show that gender social stratification in traditional Javanese culture is strongly influenced by a patriarchal system that limits women's roles to the domestic sphere, while men dominate the public sphere. This inequality is reflected in cultural norms, gender stereotypes, and rigid role divisions, which cause women to experience subordination and limited access to education, employment, and public participation. Efforts to reinterpret Javanese cultural concepts such as kanca wingking and swarga nunut neraka katut not only as traditional norms but also as symbolic practices that still operate in gender relations in modern Javanese society. Thus, this study shows that the patriarchal cultural heritage has not been completely abandoned, but rather reproduced in a more subtle form amid the discourse of contemporary gender equality.
