Abstract

This paper challenge to raise the understanding that “the Bible is anti LGBT”. Hermeneutical examination of the six passages or texts shows that in the Bible there are anti-LGBT texts, but there are also pro-LGBT texts. Then the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, often used as “proof” that the Bible is anti-LGBT, can also be interpreted as opposites. Finally there is a hermeneutical discussion about the relationship of religion and science, culture and human rights, and concrete proposals regarding the pastoral actions of the church against LGBT people. Keywords: Hermeneutics, Sola Scriptura Plus, anti-LGBT texts, pro-LGBT texts, religion/theology, science/science, human rights, and restriction.

Abstract

In his latest book the biblical theologian Gerrit Singgih looks in detail at verses in the Bible about same sex relationships that ring negative and also the few more positive examples of same sex relations. This article contrasts Singgih’s exegesis with that of Rome, both in documents from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and also in the Catechism of the Indonesian bishops. Rome states that finding oneself with “homosexual tendencies” is morally neutral while also declaring it “objectively bad.” According to Rome every sexual act has to be open to life and so homosexual relations are sinful. However, this is demonstrably wrong, as for instance, for infertile or elderly married couples. The writer concludes that he is in full agreement with Gerrit Singgih who interprets the negative verses in the Bible within the context of biblical times.  Keywords: LBGTQ+, Hermenutic Pattern, Creative Interpretation, Neutral Status, Natural Law.

Abstract

This article aims at introducing the content and purpose of the Apostolic Constitution Veritatis Gaudium (Joy of Truth), namely the renewal of theological faculties and ecclesiastical institution of higher education. This renewal needs to be brought into the public sphere, so that it can be realized by paying attention to the sociocultural context of the local Church. By analyzing qualitatively data collected through the study of literature and employing the contextual theological approach, it is concluded that the Catholic Church in Indonesia, especially the theological faculties as well as Catholic higher education institutions need to intensify dialogue in theology and in preaching, to build solidarity, networking and interand trans-disciplinary cooperation with other institutions. Through dialogue theology will be more context-oriented and the preaching will be an invitation to others to deepen God’s self-revelation in the history, culture and the local social context. In this way, the Gospel or the Good News would be Joy of Truth (Veritatis Gaudium) for all people. Keywords: Veritatis Gaudium, the joy of truth, contextual theology, theology and culture, church in Indonesia, multicultural, dialog, catholic education.

Abstract

This article focuses on the roots of radicalism as can be seen in young Muslims in NTT Province. The majority of the population of this province are either Protestant or Catholic Christians. Nationally, NTT has a reputation for being a province which is coloured by religious tolerance. People of different religions live side by side peacefully. A probable reason for this is the fact that family and friendship relationships tend to cross religious boundaries. However, in recent times religious harmony has been impacted by radical  thinking among tertiary Muslim students. These seeds can be seen in their understanding of, and attitude to, radical Islamism. At the level of understanding, they do not differentiate between Islam as a religion and Islam as an ideology. At times they identify radical Islamism as the teaching of Islam. Attitude-wise, this article points out that a considerable number of respondents hold certain convictions which are in line with the ideology of radical Islamism. Keywords: Radical Islamism, fundamentalism, radical Islam, Islamic student, ideology of a Islam, terror, terrorism.
