Abstract

Business is a social entity which inevitably effects the quality of human life. Its success in supporting human life in general and, particularly, the long-term economic prospects it aims to achieve, require the real commitment of its agents to take moral values seriously in doing business. Instead of moral minimalism, a good and healthy business necessitates every businessman/woman to act beyond economic and legal interests to embrace “the genius of AND” as the ideal approach in doing business. Real commitment on seriously taking into account moral considerations in the process of business decision-making would in turn, in the long term, bring greater economic opportunities and, hence, enhance the prospect of business. At the centre of a good and healthy business is its agents’ commitment on taking all stakeholders’ interests to be their own. Doing justice to all stakeholders and to the public at large is, therefore, the life-blood of good and healthy businesses. A moral culture in business requires moral models to flourish and be shared commonly among all business agents. Abstract

Kata-kata Kunci: Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, Thomistic synthesis of the Aristotelian philosophy and the Augustinian theology, habits, human virtues and theological virtues.

Abstract

The human propensity of openness to the transcendent can be seen as a fundamental predisposition. It is also a need. We encounter such a need in numerous traditions and cultures, including in postmodern societies. In the Hode Ilu ritual, the people of the Lewoingu domain of Eastern Flores (Kabupaten Flores Timur, NTT), express the inseparableness of cosmic reality (humans and their world) with transcendent reality. They experience nature as numinus with supernatural power. This power enables people to submit in awe and act out the heritage of the ancestors in an artistic performance expressing people’s relationship with others, nature, oneself, and with the Divine. This ritual performance is called “artistic” because it is a self expression of the community through ritual that emphasises a fundamental cosmic harmony which is both religious (transcendent) and ethical (in the here and now). When the tradition expresses a form of faith in the transcendent in ritual, then the sharing of human experiences, including relationships of people with the Transcendent, with the cosmos, with others, and with oneself, is not wrong. Also, in such ritual performances, we see a change of perspective and a change in human action regarding oneself, others, nature (with its powers), and with the Divine.

Abstract

Abstract: Islamism has all of the characteristics of other secularideologies, such as the faith that it has and offers the one and onlyabsolute truth and thus claims that it reserves the right to imposelaw which must be obeyed by the society. Its ideological thoughtwhich can endanger peace is that political views are consideredto be truth. On this basis, the society tends to be mapped outaccording to the right/wrong schema and therefore the ownersof truth feel legitimized to disregard and oppress groups whichthey consider wrong. This has a serious consequence for realisticunderstanding of what politics is. One typical, main characteristicof an ideological thought is that obliterating enemies is consideredas an essential part of political duties, which is a principle to watchout for. Politics is not theory but praxis (action) and hence thereis no absoluteness. Consequently, there are always pro and contra, the need for consideration, and the possibility of compromises. Inall political process, there would be the winner and loser, but therewould be no right and wrong. The role of politics lies in an effortto ensure peaceful social life with freedom and justice amongpeople of different religious backgrounds who are determined tobuild a nation together. Keywords: Politics, Islamism, Ideology, Ideological Thought

Abstract

This article - inspired by the notorious case of an Indonesian priest in North Sumatra running for public office despite stern and repeated warnings from his bishop not to do so - aims to elaborate the theme of active participation of priests in politics in the light of can. 285 § 3 and can. 287, § 2 of Code of Canon Law, using the method of juridical exegesis and historical-critical analysis of various legal grounds and various affirmations of the Church's Magisterium. Through careful study, the author shows that the Church, while acknowledge the political right of priests as well as the provision for exeption, imposing a prohibition on them from participating actively in the political arena. The ratio legis behind such prohibition are threefold, namely safeguard canonically the identity and the mission of the priests; priest as a symbol of unity, fraternity and peace; respect for the peculiar duties of the laity in politics. The author argues that the priests should not be given a permission to take any public office and should not take sides in the area of party politics since there are no situation that make it necessary to intervene in that way. Key words: Active participation, politic, priest, prohibition, exeption

Abstract

In this study, the author focuses on the reality of the improperness of prison as something that does not suit the values of Pancasila, especially the one which talks about 'just and civilized humanity'. The author would like to explore the motives and causes why the government does not guarantee welfare for the prisoners. This research uses a qualitative approach, with a literature study as a data collection method. The author tries to see the reality of humanity and the motives that underlie the guidance of prisoners through the point of view of phenomenological philosophy. This study concludes that the Indonesian government has not been able to ensure human values for the prisoners. Improperness of the prison such as the overload of occupants is a sign that the perspective of understanding prisons and inmates is still deviant. Prison is not seen as a place of transformation but as a place of punishment, just like the old understanding of prison. The Indonesian people seem to have not been able to regard prisoners as people with dignity. Key words: Humanity, Injustice, Prisoners, Prisons, Pancasila.

Abstract

Abstract: This article attempts to reconstruct and analyse the Habermas’ view on democracy as discourse and deliberation. The concept of deliberative and discursive democracy is a model of criticism toward an attempt to narrow the conception about democracy simply as an institutional matter. The concept of deliberative democracy emphasizes the importance of public discursive participation of citizens by establishing critical public sphere that is the heart of democracy. Furthermore, Habermas highlights that there is no rule of law without radical democracy. Such radical democracy is expressed through the active involvement of citizens in public sphere to express ideas that have impact on political decisions and public policy. This article accentuates that the transformation of public opinion to be a political power is an ongoing process. Therefore, an authentic democracy presupposes a critical publicity and democratic political culture. Without a voluntary citizens’ initiative in this regard, a state will have no future. To support thisarguments, the writer uses literature research method by analyzing the main work of Jȕrgen Habermas on deliberative democracy namely Faktizitӓt und Geltung (Facts and Norms), as well as some secondary literatures dealing with the thoughts of Habermas on democracy. Keywords: Habermas, deliberative democracy, discourse, pluralism, state

Abstract

This essay examines citizenship struggles in the small Indonesian town of Maumere during two decades of intensive state formation after decolonization in 1945. These struggles culminated in the bloody anticommunist purges of late 1965 and early 1966, which in this area mainly reflected “ethnic” tensions. They should not be seen merely as evidence of a deeply divided society, of elite factional fights over resources, or of state institutions that were too weak to exert effective control over society (though all those observations have some truth as well). Rather they were contentious efforts to establish new forms of public authority in the broad space between state and society. Novel informal institutions and rituals developed in the interstices between state and society. Christian Lund has called them “twilight institutions”. They all aimed to include ordinary people in public affairs. They were clientelistic, and their rivalry sometimes produced violence. Yet they were essentially about bringing ordinary people into a productive relationship with the new state; that is, they were about citizenship. The greatest irony of the “twilight institutions” is that they only became instruments of total exclusion after the central state began to assert itself decisively also in small provincial towns such as this. The history of “twilight institutions” continues to impress itself on actually existing forms of citizenship in the provinces today.

Abstract

Corruption involves a self-interested misuse of power. Its effects are wide reaching, in particular on the quality of life of the poor. A corrupt country fails to prepare social assistance for the poor, and also results in the inability to create work opportunities for its citizens. Corruption is usually divided into three categories, namely that which involves an individual’s authority (deceiving, stealing), that which involves two persons acting together (gratification, extortion) and corruption as a system of patronage. This essay focuses on the third model, as the result of the practice of procedural democracy as experienced in Indonesia after the 1998 “Reformation”. In the final section the author suggests that we apply democracy as a popular control of public affairs and as a politics of the citizens’ equality of rights, as put forward by David Beetham, as a solution to the practice of corrupt patronage democacry.

Abstract

As a social movement, Credit Unions (CU) display the social, economic and cultural strength of little people. In line with contemporary developments and the advance of modern technology, the management of CUs needs to be monitored, evaluated and adapted to the social, economic and political situation that is continually changing. Nevertheless, in the midst of change the values of the CU are perennial and are very much needed in the movement. After looking at the founding and development, strengthens and weaknesses of the CU, this essay advances concrete steps for handling them. Kata-kata kunci: CU, gerakan sosial, kesejahteraan, pembudayaan nilai-nilai, keadilan, kearifan, keberanian, kejujuran dan tanggungjawab, tantangan-tantangan CU.
