Abstract

This study provides an analysis of cultural substitution strategy used in movie script. The objective of this study is to describe how the implementation and how the achievement of this strategy in movie script. The data were taken from of English and Indonesian subtitles FROZEN II (2019) movie. The descriptive qualitative approach applied in this study. The results of this study were no cultural substitution strategy were found in FROZEN II movie script, however there were 5 types of translation strategy proposed by Mona Baker found in English and Indonesian subtitles of FROZEN II movie. They are translation by using a more general word with 770 data (70%), translation by using paraphrase using unrelated word with 157 data (14%), translation by using paraphrase using loan word or loan plus explanation word with 60 data (5%), translation by using related words with 59 (5%), and translation by using more neutral/less expressive with 22 data (2%). Based on the findings, the researcher found that translation by using more general word becomes the strategy that the most frequent in movie script with 770 data (70%).For the achievment of equivalence the data shown that is appropriate because the score of the appropriateness is 700-100.

Abstract

This research is entitled “The Representation of Ahmadiyah’s Case on The Jakarta Post (A Study of Critical Discourse Analysis)”. This study discusses about the elements and the strategies that are used by Jakarta Post in writing the people that involve in Ahmadiyah’s case, and in what way Jakarta Post represent Ahmadiyah’s case. This research uses analytical descriptive method in analyzing the data. Here the data is collected, described, analyzed and made a conclusion. After analyzing the data, it is found that in writing the actor that involves in Ahmadiyah’s case, Jakarta Post uses two strategies: Passivization and Nominalization. The functions of those strategies are to hide the acts of the actor that involves in Ahmadiyah’s case like the government, the people and group that support Ahmadiyah, and the group that is against Ahmadiyah. The result also reveals that the largest number of using passivization and nominalization that are used by Jakarta Post in hiding the actor that are involving in Ahmadiyah’s case refers to the Government. By this strategies, the governments as the actor that is hidden by Jakarta Post is safe from the accusation of the society because of their decision in making the recommendation to ban Ahmadiyah.

Abstract

This study aimed to assess effectiveness of English language teacher candidates’ screening and admission criteria used to admit quality teacher candidates to English language teacher prepartion. An evaluative case study design was employed. Document analysis and semi structured interview methods were used to collect the data. The study employed purposive sampling techniques to review admission guideline document, choose three English language teacher educators, six teacher candidates, college vice Dean and practicum coordinator. The researcher analysed data thematically in relation to the research questions. The findings show that the screening and admission criteria of English language teacher candidates do not consider candidates’ English language background knowledge, proficiency and interest to teach it. The entrance and interview exams also don’t address candidates’ English language knowledge and communication skills. Overall there is no particular attention to assess candidates’ English language competence and interest to teach English language in the process of screening and admission. To alleviate these gaps, English language teacher preparation program needs to assess candidates’ English language background, communication skills and interest teach English as screening and admitting criteria to teacher preparation

Abstract

Language is a communication source to deliver information or message. In the communication process, people use language to express idea, opinion, thought, or desire whether in spoken or written form. Following the globalization era, music evolves in human daily life. Through its lyrics, people communicate feelings. Message contained in a song is called as moral value. This research aimed to describe the moral value of an English song viewed from the perspective of appraisal theory. It employed descriptive qualitative approach. The object of the study is the Aladdin’s soundtrack entitled Speechless sung by Naomi Scott released in 2019. The result of the study depicted that the dominant attitude system found is affect system (68.97%) followed by appreciation (17.24%) and judgement (13.79%). The result showed that the songwriters mostly using their feelings in its lyrics. The feeling that dominantly appeared are positive feelings of fearlessness, confidence, and bravery. Furthermore, the prominent attitude of the song is inscribed attitude (72.72%) that indicated directly conveyed, and followed by invoked attitude (27.27%). Related to feminism, the song delivered message in which women should not be underestimated and all the old stigmas which weaken women position should be against in order to achieve equality among genders. Based on the analysis, the song can contribute in material development for the sound argument teaching.

Abstract

This study attempts to find the accuracy of sentence level ((1) simple sentence, (2) compound sentence, (3) complex sentence, (4) compound-complex sentence) in English-Indonesian subtitle of The End of the F***ing World – Season 2. The researcher collected the data by watching the series in English and Indonesian subtitle, then these subtitle were categorized into those 4 types of sentences. These data were checked its accuracy using a theory from Nababan et al. (2012). The researcher found 461 data of simple sentences and 445 (96.7%) of them are accurate. Second one, the researcher found 67 data of compound sentences and 63 (94%) of them are accurate. Third one, the researcher found 43 data of complex sentences and 41 (95%) of them are accurate. Last one, the researcher found 8 data of compound-complex sentences and 7 (87.5%) of them are accurate. Based on that, the researcher can say that the subtitle is accurate, but I still found some mistakes that are considered as major ones because these might cause ambiguity or misunderstanding to audiences, that’s why we – as the audiences – also need to be more careful in reading some subtitle.

Abstract

The definition of shift is a moving or departure from one grammatical system of the source language to another grammatical system in the target language without changing the meaning of it. There are two main types of shifts in translation, level shifts and category shifts. This study attempted to describe the existence of shifts especially category shifts only of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences from the English version to the Indonesian version of the translation of the bilingual book entitled “History Bilingual Textbook for Junior High School Year VII” published by Yrama Widya. I used a descriptive qualitative method as a research design in the process of analysis. I analyzed the category shifts occurred in words by words, phrases by phrases, clauses by clauses, and sentences by sentences carefully. The study found out that the category shifts occurred in the all of the chapters of the textbook consisted of structure, unit, class, and intra-system shift in words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. From the analysis of the study, I can conclude that the category shifts that occurred in the process of textbook translation happened because of four reasons. First, there were grammatical changes specifically in the order of the words. Second, the source texts that located in the different ranks of the unit. Third, the source text that located in the different classes or parts of speech. Fourth, the plural source texts that mostly translated into singular nouns in the target texts.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the types and the most dominant type of formulaic competence, how teacher and students differ in using the expressions, and how is the relationship between linguistic and formulaic competence in classroom interactions. The subjects of this study were one English teacher and 36 students of tenth grade in the academic year of 2020/2021. This study used a qualitative method. The data were collected through observation and documentation. In order to analyse the data, the theory proposed by Biber et al. (1999) and Celce-Murcia (2007) were used. The study revealed that there were five types of formulaic competence used in classroom interactions as Biber et al. (1999) proposed. They were collocations, idiomatic phrases, lexical bundles, binominal expressions, and inserts. The most dominant type used was inserts with 70% and followed by lexical bundles with 19%, collocations (5%), idiomatic phrases with 3%, and binominal expressions with 3%. In the differences between the teacher and students used of the expressions, the teacher used all five types of formulaic competence, while the students only used four types of formulaic competence and disregarding the use of idiomatic phrases. During the interactions, the teacher used more varies expressions than the students. Then, the findings also showed that there was a relationship between linguistic and formulaic competence.
