Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between human capital (HC), quality of the shariah supervisory board (SSB) and performance of maqasid shariah-based Islamic banks. This study uses secondary data from the Bankscope database of 2014 to 2018. The research samples comprised 75 banks from a total population of 96 banks. Using the dynamic panel regression two-step generalised method of moments (GMM), this study revealed that HC has a significant and positive influence on sharia maqasid-based performance. SSB quality has a significant and negative effect on Islamic banks' performance. These findings support the resources-based theory that assumes more efficient human capital can facilitate the achievement of better organisation performance. The results may serve as a guideline for Islamic bank managers to enhance their bank human capital as it has a positive relationship with maqasid sharia-based performance.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the determinants of the disclosure of Islamic Social Reporting (ISR) in the Indonesian Islamic banking industry. We used profitability, award and type of ownership as the determinants of Islamic Social Reporting. Profitability was proxied by the ROA, while the award was identified by a number of awards for CSR performance for one year, and the type of ownership was classified into four: government, family, foreign, and institutional ownership. The samples were Islamic banks (IB) in Indonesia, which had published annual report for the period of 2010-2014. The data were 53 annual reports of 12 IBs. Hypotheses were tested using multiple linear regression analysis. The results showed that profitability, award, and the type of ownership partially did not affect the disclosure of ISR. Further analysis was conducted to test the effect of all the variables on each theme in the index ISR. The results indicated that award had a positive effect on the social and corporate governance themes, and lastly type of ownership had an effect on the financial, product, human resources, social and governance themes.

Abstract

This study aims to examine determinants of zakat payers (muzakki) interest to pay zakat through Zakat Management Organization (ZMO). The respondents were randomly selected from muzakki who paid their zakat on profession/income through ZMOs in Indonesia resulting in 100 respondents. Using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) method, this study found that transparency of zakat management, ZMO promotions using public figures, and supporting regulation which imposes zakat as a tax deductible expense have significant impact on muzakki's interest to pay zakat through ZMO. Meanwhile improvement of digital services and socialization of zakat through social media do not have significant effect on muzakki's interest. However, using sub-sample who are active users of social media, this study discovered a negative effect of social media usage on muzakkis interest. This finding reinforces the suitability of Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) in the context of muzakki's behavior to pay zakat which is influenced by the quality of ZMO services.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how accountants are portrayed in recent box office films. The samples for this study were movies registered in the Internet Movie Database and Film Indonesia. The study focuses on the accountant who appears in movies as a main character, side character, and/or cameo. Movies with accountant as the character and winning at least one award were chosen in this study. The semiotic analysis of movie data involved three steps: viewing the entire film, focusing on the accountants character scene in accordance with the description criteria, and interpreting the characters denotatively, connotatively, and mythically. The findings demonstrate that the stereotype of accountants shown in movies is consistent with societal preconceptions, such as being a man's occupation, having a bean counter, being introverted, and committing money theft. However, in some movies, accountants are portrayed positively. This negative depiction of accountants may cause students to be reluctant to choose accountants as their career choice. Thus, public accounting firms will encounter difficulties in recruiting and sustaining their businesses. Framed with the social representation theory, this study contributes to the accounting literature by focusing on the depiction of the accountant's character shown in the film by using semiotic analysis to investigate the depiction of accountants in films released since 2000.

Abstract

This paper investigates whether the value relevance of earnings information and equity information have changed as the IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standard) convergence taken place in Indonesia. The qualitative characteristic is viewed in the perspective of relative value and incremental value relevance. Theoretically, the earnings value relevance should increase, and equity lost its value relevance pursuant the IFRS convergence. The financial data of manufacturing companies in Indonesian Stock Exchange during 2008-2016 were sorted purposively based on companies with complete financial statement and stock price data during 8 consecutive years. This study uses regression analysis to test the hypotheses. It was found that earning and equity information contain value relevance. Moreover, there is no evidence to support the hypotheses that IFRS convergence decrease earnings value relevance and decrease equitys value relevance.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of investment decisions and corporate financial performance on tax avoidance. We employed mining companies listed on the Asia Pacific Stock Exchanges from 2017 to 2021. The purposive sampling technique was applied to select 40 out of 97 top Australian, Indian, and Indonesian mining companies (200 firm-year observations). To test the hypotheses, the data was then analyzed comparatively using multiple linear regression analysis. The results show that investment decisions and corporate financial performance simultaneously affect tax avoidance. Partially, investment decisions has a significantly positive effect on tax avoidance, and corporate financial performance also has a significantly positive effect on tax avoidance. The results suggest that investment decisions and firm performance motivate managers to tax avoidance.
