Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the quality of mandatory and voluntary risk disclosure in Indonesia during the period of 2011 and 2012. The risk disclosure quality is defined as the quality of risk information that are disclosed by firms in term of relative quantity (adjusted by type of sub-industry and firm size), depthness (the potential impact of risk disclosed on firms future performance), the coverage within every type of risk, and the outlook profile of firms risk management. This study used samples of 48 firm-years of infrastructure companies that were listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange. Infrastructure industry was chosen due to the strategic role of this industry to support the acceleration and expansion of Indonesia's economic development. By using a descriptive qualitative method, the result showed that firms were still emphasizing on relative quantity dimension compared to the other three dimensions: coverage, depth, and outlook profile of firm risk management. In addition, the quality of mandatory risk disclosure was better than voluntary risk disclosure either for depth, coverage, or an outlook profile of firm risk management dimension. In other words, financial risk items (mandatory risk disclosure items) have better quality rather than non-financial risk items (voluntary risk disclosure items).

Abstract

The paper is motivated by the realization of the absent of critical engagement research problematizing the mainstream accounting worldview within accounting textbooks in the context of Indonesia. By doing so, this study uses the Thompsons (1990) Schema of analyzing ideology to examine the content of popular introductory financial accounting (IFA) textbooks adopted by universities to reveal how, and the extent to which, the ideological status quo is reflected within these texts. This means the analysis tries to understand how ideological meaning is constructed within the textbooks. The analysis shows that the investigated textbooks portray accounting as an abstracted notion of a practical and calculative tool. Meanwhile, the ideological assumptions and socio-political and cultural background and conflict inherent in accounting are concealed and obscured. The textbooks have not scrutinized the concepts and measurement of accounting beyond employing a shareholder perspective. Consequently, the users attention is deflected from or glossed over the underlying ideological nature of the textbooks

The FRQ local government is proxied by audit opinion from the Indonesian Supreme Audit Board (ISAB) for each local government sample. The tested independent variables are capital expenditure, characteristics of local governments (size, financial independency, and local government status), and mayors characteristics (experience and age). Data were obtained from the summary of semester audit results of ISAB, official website of the ministry of finance and the local governments in Sumatera Island. Total samples are 143 local governments and the period of study is 5 years (2016 2020, or 715 observations). Using the multinomial logistic regression, this study found that a lower ratio of capital expenditure, smaller local governments, local government in city areas, and local governments led by older and experienced mayor are associated with higher financial reporting quality. This study also uncovered that mayor education level and mayor graduated from the Institute of Public Administration (or IPDN) have positive influence of financial reporting quality of the local governments.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of managerial characteristics on investment efficiency. More specifically managerial capabilities, reputation and its interaction effect are expected to increase investment efficiency. For the test of hypothesis, firms were selected from Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2015-2019. The results show that reputation is not significantly associated with investment efficiency. Meanwhile, managerial ability (proxied by MBA/MM degree) is negatively related to investment efficiency at a significance level of 1%. The findings show that companies run by managers with good skills and knowledge tend to be less efficient. In addition, the interaction variable is positively related to investment efficiency at a significance level of 1%. Prior to the inclusion of interaction variable, the result shows that firms with high managerial reputation are more likely to manage assets efficiently which leads to higher investment efficiency. Managerial skills are either insignificantly associated or negatively associated with investment efficiency. When the interaction variable is included into regression model, the relationship between managerial reputation and investment efficiency becomes insignificant but managerial ability turns out to be highly significant. The practical implication of this study is that public companies in Indonesia should consider more on managerial reputation rather than their educational degree.
