Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to find out whether selenium could increase levels of antioxidants and decrease free radicals in lung tissue of Wistar rats after exposure to e-cigarette smoke. Methods: This study used an experimental method with control group design. Male Wistar rats with criteria aged 2–3 months, weighing 200-250 grams were used as animal models in this study to assess cell damage through the expression of Superoxide Dismutase, Glutathione Peroxidase and Malondialdehyde in the lung tissue using immunohistochemical staining. E-cigarette smoke containing 6 mg of nicotine was given to each group of animal models with differences in the amount and duration of time. The adaptation process in experimental animals was carried out for approximately 5 days. Results and Conclusion: Selenium has been shown to increase the expression of antioxidant superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, and decrease the levels of malondialdehyde in cells following oral administration of selenium in Wistar rats (p <0.05). In addition, selenium also reduced the amount of free radical in the cells; when it was given before exposed to e-cigarette smoke. It can be concluded that oral selenium can increase antioxidants levels and decrease free radicals in lung tissue cells due to exposure to e-cigarette.

Abstract

The objective of the present study is to evaluate drug prescribing patterns in children admitted with respiratory tract infections into pediatric ward. This is a prospective cross-sectional study conducted for a period of one year at a tertiary hospital located in a city of Andhra Pradesh, South India. The study was done by using prescribing indicators from the World health organization (WHO) manual for the conduction of drug use evaluation studies. The prevalence of respiratory tract infections, particularly lower respiratory tract infection is high among children less than 5 years. 54.39% of drugs are prescribed with brand names, of which the majority of drugs are administered through parenteral route (58.26%). Antibiotics (34.7%) are highly prescribed in all the cases followed by other category drugs. A significant difference was found in the evaluation of prescribed daily dose and standard dose. The profile of drug use in the present study was similar to previous Indian studies. Most of the prescribing encounters are parental forms and band names that need exploration of the present treatment trends. The present baseline data can serve for the development of national Pediatric prescribing guidelines in the future.

Abstract

Metastatic breast cancer (MBC) to the cervicothoracic area of the spine is very rare cases. In this case report, we describe a case for this rare lesion. Case: a thirty-nine-year-old female with a history of weakness of the legs and pain in the upper back spine came to the hospital with history of breast biopsy with result of adenocarcinoma and positive long tract signs. On whole-spine MRI, it is shown the bone metastatic process on C5-7, T3, T5-7, T9-10 with bony destructions and extradural mass around T5-7 and T9-10. Two stages of surgery were planned for this patient. The first operation was addressed to cervical metastatic process through the posterior approach, in the form of a cervical fusion with laminectomy biopsy. The second step was via posterior approach for thoracic decompression and fusion. Since the Karnovsky score was 60 and single step surgery was chosen, led to cervicothoracic decompression fusion at single stage using augmented exoskeleton cement technique. During follow-up, the patient was neurologically improved on the both legs function significantly, though gait was still tolerable and recovery program was still ongoing in outpatient department. MBC treatment for long spine involved lesions can also be handled via a single posterior approach with good results especially for case with cervicothoracic metastatic process. Keywords: Metastatic breast cancer, Posterior approach, Cervicothoracic fusion, Exoskeleton.

Abstract

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) is a flowering plant in the mallow family. Okra is important for its edible green and dry seed pods. The plant is cultivated in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate regions around the world. The geographical source of okra now is very available in Iraq. The rabbit rapidly develops severe hypercholesterolemia and decrease in levels of ascorbic acid and increase in ratio of bad cholesterol to good cholesterol in response to dietary manipulation. The results of this study showed that, there was a significant decrease in serum total cholesterol  and lipoprotein ratio for groups of rabbits that administrated with dry okra aqueous extract with its seeds (0.5g/kg) (DOE+ cholesterol oil-fed) as compared to control group( not administrated) at the end of six week of experiment (398±4.0) vs. (175± 5) (P < 0.05). On the other hand, a significant difference in the level of serum total cholesterol (P<0.05) starts in control group treated with cholesterol-oil fed at the end of six week of experiment as compared to cholesterol+ DOE group  (398±4) vs. (543±4). The aqueous extract of dry okra may be enhancing the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids in the liver by activation of an enzyme α-hydroxylase. DOE may be having inhibition action on HMG-COA synthase that responsible on endogenous synthesis of cholesterol in liver. Keywords: Dry okra extract, Induce cholesterol. Lipoprotein ratio, Ascorbic acid.
