Abstract

This article aims to explain on the concept of one-dimensional man of Herbert Marcuse. One-dimensional man is a term used by Herbert Marcuse to criticize modern society that is too submissive under the principle of technology. In his idea, Marcuse considers that technology worked on by capitalists has turned into the most repressive ideology that makes humans in modern society passive and uncritical. Modern technology is also transformed into a tool of social control and then takes over human life. Its main goal is to paralyze critical reasoning so that humans do not negate the system. Consequently, humans no longer move from their authenticity but move according to what is shown through a burst of symbols produced by technology. Humans feel themselves free and happy but without realizing it, they are being manipulated, oppressed and enslaved by the technological rationality system. This system of technological rationality then gave birth to one dimensional man. One dimensional man are humans who only move in one direction, which is none other than to perpetuate the system implemented by the capitalists.

Abstract

Genetic engineering is one of the methods used in biotechnology to modify genes in a living being, in order to achieve a desired purpose. This practice has not only a good impact on human life, but also has a negative impact. The positive impact that can be felt is that GMO plants provide an increase in the quantity and quality of the crops. While the negative impacts appear in the form of threatened survival of conventional plants, the disappearance of uniqueness from plant diversity, and even the shift of the main goal, which is to meet human food needs, to be for personal benefit or for certain groups only. These negative impacts present ethical issues that need to be discussed because they are related to the survival of nature, including humans and plants. This problem will be discussed in this article with a focus on ethical issues that arise from the practice of genetic engineering in plants. Departing from these problems, it will then show the attitudes that can be taken by humans when dealing with these problems. The starting point of these attitudes is the environmental theory of biocentrism and also the accompanying principles.

Abstract

This paper explores the comparison between the concept of freedom in the existentialist philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre and the moral teachings of the Catholic Church as articulated in the encyclical Evangelium Vitae, particularly in the context of abortion decisions. Sartre views freedom as an essential and absolute characteristic of human beings, wherein each individual is fully responsible for their life choices without reference to external norms. Within this framework, the decision to undergo an abortion can be seen as an authentic expression of individual freedom. In contrast, the Catholic Church teaches that human freedom must be directed toward truth and the objective value of life, which comes from God. Abortion, in the Church’s view, constitutes a violation of the irreplaceable dignity of human life. Using a qualitative approach with textual analysis of Sartre’s works and Church documents, especially Evangelium Vitae, this paper reveals the tension between individual autonomy and the demands of objective moral truth. The study underscores the importance of a balanced philosophical and theological reflection in understanding human freedom, particularly in complex ethical issues such as abortion.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the ecological views and practices of the community in Walian II Village amid the global ecological crisis. Based on in-depth interviews with local leaders, it was found that nature is understood not only as a physical resource but also as an integral part of spiritual and cultural life. Local traditions such as giving thanks for the harvest, prohibitions against indiscriminate tree-cutting, and replanting reflect a harmonious relationship between humans and nature. This worldview is reinforced by Catholic teachings, particularly through the ecological appeals in the Laudato Si’ encyclical. However, these values are increasingly being eroded by the forces of modernization, individualism, and consumerist lifestyles. Despite this, local initiatives such as reforestation, the use of organic fertilizers, and faith-based environmental education demonstrate ongoing efforts toward sustainable conservation. This study underscores the importance of preserving local values as a contextually meaningful ecological solution that is spiritual, ethical, and cultural in nature. It recommends cross-sector collaboration in building collective ecological awareness rooted in tradition, faith, and scientific knowledge.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the effectiveness of the Vos Estis Lux Mundi (VELM) policy in handling cases of sexual abuse of minors within the Catholic Church. The study employed a qualitative approach through a case study method, comparing two real-life incidents: one case that has not yet received formal follow-up from Church authorities, and one case that has been handled internally by the Diocese and is being processed at the Holy See level. Data were obtained through direct interviews with the victims' families, conducted online via instant messaging applications, and analysed concerning the principles of canon law and the Church's child protection policies. The results show significant differences in reporting channels, victim protection, and institutional responses between the two cases. Furthermore, it was found that the main challenges in implementing VELM lie in the lack of community education, social pressure on victims' families, and limited pastoral support in assisting the recovery process. This study emphasises the importance of consistent implementation of universal Church policies at the local level for the sake of justice, transparency, and holistic recovery for victims.

Abstract

This study aims to understand Capra's perspective on a sustainable society while simultaneously drawing inspiration from his efforts to build a harmonious relationship between humans and nature. The research method used is qualitative with a literature study approach. According to Capra, the ecological crisis continues to intensify each year. This crisis is caused by excessive human intervention and exploitation of nature. Such intervention and exploitation are rooted in a worldview that perceives nature as a machine. To address this crisis, a paradigm shift is needed from the mechanistic paradigm to a systemic-holistic paradigm that views humans and nature as an interconnected whole. Arising from this shift, and especially grounded in his philosophy of bioregionalism, Capra proposes the idea of a sustainable society: a society that lives with an awareness of the deep interconnection between humans and nature. This awareness encourages people to embody ecological principles and adopt an ecological lifestyle. Capra's concept of a sustainable society teaches that the ecological crisis can only be resolved when humans acknowledge the crisis, recognize their unity with nature, and develop sustainable living patterns to foster a harmonious relationship between nature and humanity.

Abstract

This paper explores Theodor W. Adorno’s critique of the Enlightenment project. Originally intended to liberate humanity from myth and superstition, the Enlightenment, according to Adorno, ultimately gave rise to a new form of domination through instrumental rationality. Alongside Max Horkheimer in Dialectic of Enlightenment, Adorno argued that reason in modern society has become a tool of control rather than emancipation. The Enlightenment, they claim, created a “new myth” through technocratic rationality, leading to authoritarian social structures and reducing individuals to objects within systems of power. Adorno identifies this rationality as a form of modern slavery, masked by ideals of humanism and progress. In response, he proposed negative dialectics, a method that reveals hidden contradictions in social systems and challenges linear ideas of progress. Through this approach, Adorno underscores the need for continuous critique of reason and power to safeguard human dignity and freedom in the face of modernity’s oppressive tendencies.

Abstract

Ancestor veneration is a deeply rooted tradition in Chinese culture and is closely linked to Confucian values, particularly the concept of xiao (filial piety). This article aims to analyze how Confucian values, particularly filial piety, are manifested in the practice of ancestor veneration among Chinese in Indonesia. The results show that the practice of ancestor veneration reflects the principle of xiao in the form of appreciation for ancestral services, intergenerational moral obligations, and family harmony. This study strengthens the theory that Confucian philosophy is not merely an abstract philosophy, but is truly lived in everyday cultural practices as a life value. This research also contributes to understanding the dynamics of Chinese tradition and the relevance of Confucian values in the modern context.
