Abstract

The awarding of the title National Hero to Soeharto through Presidential Decree No. 116/TK/2025 has generated public debate. On the one hand, Soeharto is regarded as having made significant contributions through political stability, economic growth, and development programs such as the Repelita, which brought substantial improvements to public welfare. On the other hand, his period of rule was also marked by serious human rights violations. This study aims to assess Soeharto’s eligibility to receive the title of National Hero based on Law No. 20 of 2009 and modern human rights standards, particularly the principles of non-derogable rights, accountability, and human dignity. The fundamental assumption of this study is that a hero’s title is not merely a historical judgment, but also a moral one that must comply with national legal standards and universal norms, and must be free from violations of absolute human rights. The analysis finds that although Soeharto achieved major accomplishments in national development, the structural involvement of the state in human rights violations during his presidency violates fundamental moral principles and the criteria for heroism as stipulated in Law No. 20 of 2009. Therefore, the granting of the National Hero title to Soeharto is ethically and legally highly problematic.

Abstract

Every community group has a collective appreciation for objects that hold deep indigenous wisdom (local wisdom), including the Papuan indigenous community regarding the crown of the Bird of Paradise (Cenderawasih). This research aims to provide an accurate review of the Cenderawasih crown burning case in Jayapura and to offer a relevant philosophical assessment. The core question posed by the author is what is the appropriate analysis of the Cenderawasih crown burning issue in Jayapura, especially when viewed from a philosophical perspective. Through qualitative research utilizing a descriptive-analytical writing method, the author found that a violation of local wisdom values occurred through this Cenderawasih crown burning case. The action taken by the BBKSDA (Papua Natural Resources Conservation Agency) was intended to deter individuals involved in the illegal hunting of the Cenderawasih, an endangered endemic bird , but on the other hand, the act of burning they chose sparked protests from the Papuan community, who viewed it as a disregard for their customs and traditions. Therefore, a precise assessment from a philosophical standpoint is needed to avoid bias in evaluating this case

Abstract

This study explores the meaning of the term “free” (gratis) in public policy, focusing on the Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) program, and its role in shaping subjectivity in the relation between society and the state. Using a qualitative hermeneutic approach, this research relies on library study and applies a dialectical analysis of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. The thesis views “free” as a neutral term indicating the absence of cost. The antithesis, based on Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu, argues that language operates within discourse and symbolic power, shaping social reality. The synthesis proposes a holistic view in which “free” functions both as a communicative tool and as a socially constructed concept rooted in collective participation. The study finds that the term not only describes policy but also subtly positions society as passive recipients, thus requiring a more critical and reflective understanding.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of religiosity through the concept of Sahala in the Salvation Army's social service practices. This study is motivated by the shift in religiosity paradigm from a normative approach to contextual social praxis. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews, limited participant observation, and documentation of leaders and active servants selected through purposive and snowball sampling. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The results indicate that Sahala is defined as a living faith manifested in concrete social actions. Religiosity is formed through repeated service practices as an arena of social construction, where faith values are externalized in actions, objectified in community culture, and internalized as individual identity. This practice strengthens social solidarity and encourages transformative church service. This research contributes to integrating Sahala theology into the sociology of religion perspective, while emphasizing the importance of social service as a concrete expression of faith in community life.

Abstract

This study examines the understanding of Catholic laypeople regarding the fruits of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at Stasi Maria Ratu Damai Kolongan. The research was conducted to identify the level of understanding among the faithful and to determine aspects that still require further catechetical formation. A quantitative descriptive method was employed using questionnaires distributed to 47 respondents. The findings indicate that, in general, the respondents possess a good understanding of the fundamental meaning and spiritual fruits of the sacrament. Most participants recognize the sacrament as a source of spiritual strength, consolation, courage, union with the suffering of Christ, forgiveness of sins, and preparation for eternal life. However, the study also reveals several misconceptions among the faithful, particularly regarding the possibility of physical healing through the sacrament, its relationship with the forgiveness of sins, and the perception that it is intended only for those approaching death. These findings suggest the need for more systematic and contextual catechesis to deepen the faithful’s understanding of the sacrament. Through proper catechetical formation, the faithful can better appreciate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick as a sign of Christ’s healing presence and saving grace in times of suffering and illness.

Abstract

This article aims to explore the richness of values, concepts, and paradigms embedded in Balinese local culture related to ecology. As a cohesive social community, the Balinese people possess indigenous wisdom that forms the foundation of an ecological philosophy: Tri Hita Karana. This principle serves as an ethical foundation inspiring the spirit of environmental stewardship for the sake of life’s harmony. Tri Hita Karana is concretely implemented through cultural rituals expressing reverence for nature, most notably Tumpek Uduh. Tumpek Uduh constitutes a ritual expression of gratitude toward nature, understood as a manifestation of the Divine. This study employs a qualitative methodology with a literature-based approach. Based on the findings of this study, the author concludes that Balinese society holds a profound reservoir of values for protecting and preserving the natural environment. Through the ritual of Tumpek Uduh, grounded in the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, the Balinese offer a locally rooted ethical perspective for evaluating and understanding nature. Grounded in this rich philosophical heritage, the Balinese do not view nature merely as an material resource; rather, they perceive it as a manifestation of the Divine endowing nature with intrinsic spiritual significance and thus demanding respect, protection, and preservation.

Abstract

The modern ecological crisis, characterized by the excessive exploitation of marine resources demands solutions that go beyond formal policies and technological innovations. This research explores the Mane’e tradition on Kakorotan Island, Talaud Islands, as a model of local wisdom that integrates spiritual, social, and ecological dimensions in environmental preservation. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative method with a literature review approach, this study analyzes how Mane’e represents the harmonious relationship between God, humanity, and nature. The results indicate that the Mane’e tradition—through the customary prohibition system (Eha) and environmentally friendly fishing techniques (Sam’mi)—has proven effective in maintaining the sustainability of marine ecosystems. Socially, Mane’e strengthens community cohesion through the spirit of mutual cooperation (gotong royong) and a fair distribution system (Matahia Ina). Spiritually, the ritual affirms the position of nature as a trust from the Creator that must be held sacred. This research concludes that Mane’e is not merely a fishing technique, but a philosophy of life and a form of spiritual-ecological literacy relevant as an alternative solution for environmental conservation in the modern era. Efforts in youth education and legal protection are essential to ensure these noble values endure amidst the currents of modernization.
