Gunung Djati Conference Series merupakan penyedia layanan publikasi dan konferensi berbagai bidang keilmuan yang diterbitkan oleh UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung dan sebagai sarana publikasi hasil penelitian. Penerbit ini memuat artikel yang belum pernah dipublikasikan sebelumnya yang berupa artikel hasil penelitian ataupun penelitian terapan. Informasi mengenai pedoman penulisan artikel dan prosedur pengiriman artikel terdapat pada setiap penerbitan. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe students’ learning straties in an English as a Foreign Langauge (EFL) learning used by social and science students in certain senior high school in Sumedang. Students of grade 11 were chosen as participant of this research. 9 students of social and 9 students of science were selected as the sample of this research. This research is categorized as qualitative research using questionnaire from Oxford (1990) as the instruments and followed up by semi-structured interview to confirm the result from questionnaire. It is found that there are 6 strategies used by both social and science students. They are memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective, and social strategies. Based on the data found, the researcher concluded that most of social students frequently use social, cognitive, and affective strategies, while most of science students frequently use metacognitive, cognitive, and compensation strategies. In essence, each student has a different way of learning. they have their advantages and disadvantages. Since it is known that learning strategies are importnat it is suggested for teacher to train students to use language learning strategies that can help them become better language learners.

Abstract

This research aims at analysing teaching strategies used by the teacher in reading comprehension class and investigating the problems the teacher encounter in their own reading comprehension class. The participants involved in this research are an English teacher and 8th grade students of SMPIT Asmaul Husna, a private school located in the Tanjungsari Sumedang. A descriptive qualitative study was used as a research design here. The data were obtained from classroom observation, interview with the teacher, and document analysis. The findings revealed that the teacher employed three strategies in teaching reading comprehension, namely scaffolding, question answer relationship, and think-aloud. Additionally, the study identified three problems overcome by the teacher in teaching reading comprehension, including difficulty in finding out the appropriate materials, the limited knowledge of effective instructional strategies, and difficulty in transferring personal reading comprehension skills to teaching practice. The findings of this research are expected to contribute to the understanding of effective reading comprehension instruction and provides valuable insights for teacher training and professional development programs.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate students’ listening problems in an English as a Foreign Langauge (EFL) learning. It is conducted in one of private Junior High School in Purwakarta. This research is categorized as qualitative research by conducting a semi structured interview as the instruments of this research. The interview guideline was adopted from the categorization of listening problems from of Trismasari, et al., (2016). 8 students were selected as particapant of this reserch using purposive sampling technique and adjusted to the criteria of students with low level of listening skills. In reason that this type of students is considered as students who experienced high level of listening difficulties. Based on the data found, the researcher concluded that students encounter various kinds of listening problems in learning comprehension such as lack of listening ability, limited english vocabulary, poor knowledge of grammar, listening strategies, linguistic knowledge, familiarity with the topic, rate of speech, the inability to concentrate, different accent and dialect, and environmental variables. By knowing the problem encountered by students in listening comprehension, it is hoped that this research can provide useful insights into learners‘ performance on the listening comprehension test and its relation to listening problems. Besides, the finding of this research can also be used by the teacher on how to make enjoyable listening activities in language classroom.
