Abstract

This study aims to find out the effect of applying community language learning method on the students’ achievement in speaking. The population of the study was the first year student at Man 2 Model Medan. In this study the sample is 50 students where 25 students took as experimental group and 25 students rest was control group. The data of this study was collected by oral test . It was applied in pre test and post test, then the scores were analyzes by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis showed that t-observed value is higher than t-table value ( 3>2.00 ) at the level os significant 0.05 with the degree of freedom 48. It means that there was a effect of applying community language learning method on the students’ achievement in speaking. Keywords: Community Language Learning, Students’ Achievement, Speaking

Abstract

This study was focused to improve students’ achievement in writing narrative test through Think-Pair-Share Technique. It was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research with two cycles and six meetings. The subject of this study is Grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Teluk Mengkudu and consisted of 40 students. The instruments for collecting data used writing test for quantitative and used diary notes, observation sheet and interview sheet for qualitative. The mean of the test shows the improvements of the students’ score for orientation test was (51.4), the mean in cycle I test was (66.15), and the mean in the cycle II was (74.57). Based on the data above, it can be concluded that Think-Pair-Share technique is significantly improved students’ writing achievement especially in narrative test.   Key Words: Improving, Achievement, Writing, Narrative,Think-Pair-Share

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study concerns with improvement of students’ achievement in writing recount text through mind mapping technique in Junior High School. The subject of the study was the students in SMP Free Methodist 1 Medan, class VIII-1 which consisted of 37 students. This study was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research. The procedure of this research was done in two cycles in six meeting. The mean of students’ score in test I was 67.24. It was increased in test II to 72.78 and in test III, it became 78.79. The improvement was not only showed in the mean of the students’ score but also in the number of students who got point up to 75. In test I, the number of students who got point up to 75 was only 5.4%. In test II, the number was increased to 29.8% while in test III it became 81.1%. Based on the diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that the students gave good responds in the teaching and learning process. Based on the result of quantitative and qualitative data, it can be concluded that the application of mind mapping technique had improved the junior high school students’ achievement in writing recount text.   Keywords: Writing, Recount Text, Mind Mapping, Junior High School

Abstract

The thesis deals with Conflict of The Main Character In Pariban: Idola dari Tanah Jawa Movie. The objectives of this study were to find out the type of conflicts that faced by Halomoan as the main character in the Pariban : Idola  dari Tanah Jawa movie and to find out the causes of conflict itself. The study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of the study were movie and the script. The researcher found that the causes of conflict experienced by Halomoan as the main character in Pariban Idola Dari Tanah Jawa Movie, among others, were his condition and his surroundings, which made him under pressure, differences in opinion with the people around him, and competition. All of it is based on Hunt and Metcalf's (1996: 97) theory about conflict.

Abstract

AbstractThis research concerned with the improving students’ speaking achievement in descriptive text by applying picture in the second grade of junior high school. The objective of the research was to find out whether applying picture improves the students’ speaking achievement in descriptive text in the second grade of Junior High School. It was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research which was carried out in two cycles in six meetings. The subject of this research was the second grade students’ class VIII of SMP Negeri 1 Kisaran which consisted of 36 students. The instrument for collecting data were speaking test, observation sheet, interview, and diary notes. The techniques for data analysis were quantitative and qualitative data. In analyzing data, the mean for the students’ score in orientation test was 57.16, for the cycle I test was 68.63, and for the cycle II test was 79 and total percentage of the studentswho got improvement from the orientation test up to cycle II test was 85.72. The result of this research showed that by applying picture significantly improved students’ speaking achievement in descriptive text.Keywords: Descriptive Text, Picture, Students’ Speaking Achievement

Abstract

This study about the semiotic interpretation of “Imperfect: Karir, Cinta dan Timbangan” film with Roland Barthes Theory. This study aims to (a) find out the signs that found in “Imperfect: Karir, Cinta dan Timbangan” film and (b) describe how the signs interpreted in “Imperfect: Karir, Cinta dan Timbangan” film. This reasearch uses descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from words and phrases which are collected from ‘Imperfect: Karir, Cinta dan Timbangan’ film script. The results shows that there were 15 signs found in Imperfect: Karir, Cinta dan Timbangan film. Timbangan (balance) as the most frequent signs was about 8 data such as: stranded whale; stairs vibration; power head waste; eating tissue; broccoli hair; remember your thigh; you are so fat ya, but it’s OK it’s fresh; and both of you are so different, even you are sisterhood, followed by Cinta (love) with 4 data namely: moles; stretch mark, reduce the rice; and use sunblock, and 3 data for Karir (career) such as pregnant; round face; and she is so old school. The signs includes in Karir (career) when it relates to the development, growth, and progress of someone’s job/profession. The signs that associate to Cinta (love) connects to the deepest someone’s emotional and interpersonal affection. The signs Timbangan (balance) that have a correlation with someone’s weight and physical condition or appearance. Timbangan (balance) were realized by the utterance that refers to physical condition and closely to mock. Cinta (love) associate to the word, gesture, or utterances that express a love or deepest personal affection. Karir (career) was described by a simple word to mock that closely sounds sarcastic and exaggerating.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to discover the effect of using Brainstorming Teaching Technique on students’ achievement in writing narrative paragraph. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this research was the second grade students of SMA Swasta Raksana Medan. The samples of the research were two classes which consisted of experimental and control group which were chosen by using random sampling technique. Twenty one students were taken as the samples in each class. The experimental group was taught by using Brainstorming Teaching Technique, while the control group was taught by using lecturing technique. The instrument was used to collect the data by asking the students to write a narrative text. After analyzing the data, it was found that the value of t-observed was 5.51 with the degree of freedom (df) = 40 at the level of significance p(0.05)= 1.684. It means that t-observed was higher than t-table (5.51>1.684). Abstract

The study deals with Translation Shift in Jostein Gaarder’s Sophie’s World. The objectives of the study were to find out the types of category shift that found in Sophie’s world. It also aims to describe the translation shift that affects the reader perception in the novel of Sophie’s world. The research method of this study used qualitative research. The sources data from both novel of source language and target language in Sophie’s World novel and also interviewed five informants who known about translation shift. The data were analyzed by using Catford’s theory. The findings of the study show that there were 4 types of category shift. Each types of category shift namely: (1) structure shift, (2) class shift, (3) unit shift, (4) intra system shift. Those category shifts occur because the grammatical systems of the Source Language and Target Language are different, that is why the translator is dictated by the target language. It also affects reader reception that cost of lack understanding base on expressing the real meaning.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with improving stuudents’ achievement in reading comprehension through natural approach. The objective of this study is to iinvestigate whether there is any significant improvement of the students’ achievement in reading comprehension when it is taught by using natural approach. The subject of the study was Grade XI students of  Nasrani 3 Private Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas Swasta Nasrani 3) Medan. There were thirty one students. They were taught by using Natural Approach. The instrument for data collection were teacher made test, observation sheet and questionaire. The techniques of data analysis applied were quantitative and qualitative. In analysing the data, the students were given three reading tests namely, Orientation Test, Test Cycle I and Test Cycle II. The mean of the students’ score for the first reading test as Orientation test was 51.61 the second reading test as Cycle I test was 66.61 and the third reading test as Cycle II test was 76.61. The total percentage of the improvement from the first reading test to the third was 77.41%. the conclusion is that the procedures of natural approach can improve the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The qualitative data shows that the students were enthusiastic and interested in reading comprehension. It is suggested that teachers should apply Natural Approach as one of the media in improving students’ achievement in reading comprehension. Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out 1) the types of code-mixing in WhatsApp (WA) chat group IBAD LOVERS, 2) the way of using code-mixing in WhatsApp (WA) chat group IBAD LOVERS, and 3) the reasons for using code-mixing in WhatsApp (WA) chat group IBAD LOVERS. The data are analysed by descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research were from utterances (chat) of participants. The source of data are taken from screenshot of WhatsApp Chat Group IBAD LOVERS from February 22nd 2020 till August 6th 2020 and the online questionnaire. The results of this research showed that 1) there were five types of code-mixing are used by the participants in WhatsApp (WA) chat group IBAD LOVERS, namely: phrase insertion with total number 46 utterances (46%), word insertion with total number 30 utterances (30%), hybrid insertion with total number 11 utterances (11%), clause insertion with total numbers 10 utterances (10%), and expression insertion with total number 3 utterances (3%). 2) There were five ways to show about the using of code-mixing in WhatsApp (WA) chat group IBAD LOVERS, namely: 52 (52%) for chat, 36 (36%) for comment, 7 (7%) for photo’s caption, 3 (3%) for video’s caption, 2 (2%) for link. 3) There were four reasons about the factors of using code-mixing in WhatsApp (WA) chat group IBAD LOVERS, namely: 12 (60%) for talking a particular topic, 4 (20%) for being emphatic on something, 2 (15.3%) for to make utterance clearer, 1 (5%) for intention of clarifying the speech.
