Abstract

This study deals with the application of synectics model to improve students’ speaking ability in senior high school. This reserach was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research with two cycles in six meetings. The subject of this study was a class in the second year students of SMA SWASTA NURUL HASANAH. There were 24 students that participated in this research. The The qualitative data were taken from the diary notes, interview sheet, observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet and the quantitative data was taken from the test result and done in a pre test and the two test. The result of of the quantitative data indicate that the score of  the students imroved from cycle I to cycle II with a pre-test mean of 45.20, the test of cycle I was 46.79  and the test of cycle II was 77.83. The result of based on the data above, it can be concluded that the application of synectics model was significantly improved students’ speaking ability.   Key words: Speaking, Synectics, test, data

Abstract

This study tended to find out the kinds of signs, the realizations of sign and the reasons of signs were found in Parasite film. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The data of the study were taken from Parasite film’s scene. The source of the data was Parasite film downloaded from Bioskop XXI. The result of the study showed that this film contained 33 semiotic signs. The data were analysed by using Peirce (1993). The result of the study found 10 icons, 17 indices and 6 symbols in Parasite film. The signs found in Parasite are realized in individual and social relations. The reason for signs used in Parasite were to identify visual signs, to show cause and effect, and to communicate metaphorical and non-metaphorical expressions.

Abstract

AbstractThis research aims at improving students’ achievement in oral descriptive text usingvideo by conducting a classroom action research (CAR). The subjects were Grade X,students of State Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri: SMAN) 17Medan, the total number of the students was 39 students. The research was carriedout in two cycles with three meetings in each cycle. There were two kinds of datacollected during the research, quantitative and qualitative data. The instruments forcollecting the quantitative data were spoken tests, while for qualitative data, gatheredthrough observation sheet, interview, questionnaire, and diary notes. Based on thedata analyses, the mean of the students’ score in the orientation test was 53.9, inCycle I was 65.09, and in Cycle II was 75.34. Based on the mean scores, it can beconcluded that the students’ speaking achievement in oral descriptive text by usingvideo showed a significant improvement from 53.9 to 75.34. Therefore, it issuggested that teachers should try to use varieties of presentations in uplifting thestudents’ achievement in speaking.Keywords: Speaking, Students’ Achievement, Oral Descriptive Text, Video

Abstract

Semiotic analysis of gender representation on printed advertisements used in “SWEDISH” magazine. The objectives of this study were to identify the element and colour of symbol used in Gender representation in printed advertisement of “Swedish” magazine. The study was conducting by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of the study were obtained from the Magazine in Sweden the Swedish version of Cosmopolitan Magazine Advertisement which consisted of some pictures. The data analysis were taken downloading, looking for, describing and explaining the data. The data were analyze based on the theory by Wells, Burnett, and Moriaty about element and colour of symbol in printed advertisement. The findings indicted that there were consisted of the element and colour of symbol in printed advertisement, there were the first element of symbol in advertising layout for example (figure 4.1) this advertisement was a symbolize confident characteristic with the logotypes brand the picture, advertising content for example (figure 4.3) the meaning of this advertisement was found if you wear products from Chanel you will look closed and cold because this advertisement was product centered format which was the case of fashion advertising means price information. The second colour of symbol in colour association for example (figure 4.5) the meaning of this advertisement was clear water and clear sky blue which symbolizes nature, freshness and tranquility, logotype colour for example (figure 4.7) the meaning of this advertisement the red H&M logotype or brand text that symbolizes logotypes or logos to attract brand attention, body colour for example (figure 4.9) the meaning in this advertisement white is the body colour or common object colour in advertisements that symbolizes the art in the layout of the advertisement, colour contrast for example (figure 4.11) the meaning of this advertisement it looks like it has a light background which is white, which symbolizes art in the advertisement. The finding of this study hoped for useful resource for the development of semiotic study toward commercial works.

Abstract

   Abstract The main objective of this study is to know how effective the use of Collaborative Writing in teaching writing descriptive texts is. So this final project mainly aims at determining the effectiveness of using Collaborative Writing in teaching writing descriptive texts. This study was conducted under the consideration that the students often get difficulties in describing something. In order to achieve the objective of the study, the writer designed an action research. The population of this study was the second grade students of SMP Negeri 29 Medan. The number of the subjects of this study was 37 students. During the research, the students becoming the subjects were taught by using Collaborative Writing in teaching writing descriptive texts. There were two cycles in this action research. Each cycle consisted of four phases. Before giving treatments in those two cycles, the students were given pre-test. After each treatment in each cycle, the students were tested. And the last, they were given post-test and questionnaire. The main purpose of conducting it was to find out the validity and the reliability of the test as instrument. The result of this research showed that the students’ ability in writing descriptive texts improved after a series of treatments given in the cycles. It can be seen by comparing the means of their tests. The mean score for the pre-test was 53.92, the mean score for test 1 was 70.27, while the mean score for the post-test was 80.08. It is clear that after applying Collaborative Writing in each treatment, the mean of each test improves and gets better. The use of Collaborative Writing technique is one of the ways to make students interest in studying English especially writing descriptive text. Abstract

This research is aimed at analyzing the reading materialson the quality of English textbook Bright published by Erlanggafor the first grade studentsof junior high school.This study was designed as a documentary analysis in the form of descriptive qualitative research, in which the result would be described in the form of words without any statistical calculation. The data were collected from the reading section in the textbook. As supplementary tools of the instrument, forms of checklist were used during the research analysis. The result showed that the reading materials in Bright textbook were appropriate with the criteria of qualified English textbook suggested by PusatPerbukuan, Ministry of National Education. There were only two nonconformities found in the textbook: (a) there were some reading materials which were not presented in the textbook and (b) there were no reading materials which could encourage the development of technology and arts.Key words: analysis, relevance, reading materials, textbook, the 2013 curriculum

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the semiotic meaning in Lapo Batak ornaments in Medan. The data of this study were taken from the interpretation of Batak Toba people who live in Medan in interpreting their cultural symbols. In analyzing the data, the research was conducted by using qualitative method. The result showed the semiotic meaning and how the cultural values were realized in Lapo Batak ornaments. The data were analyzed by using Roland Barthes’ order of signification theory; denotation, connotation, and myth to emphasize the interaction between the sign with the personal cultural experience of the viewers, and the interaction between convention in the sign with the conventions experienced and expected by viewers. The researcher found that the interpretations of the personal cultural experience from the viewers were still far from the Batak Toba convention (myth) in interpreting the ornaments.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study was attempted to discover the improvement students‟ vocabulary mastery by using realia for elementary students‟ Grade IV. The objective of this study was to find out whether realia can significantly improve students‟ vocabulary or not. In this study, the writer was conducted by Applying Classroom Research. The subject of this study was one class of the grade IV students‟ of SD Negeri 060811 Medan which consisted of 36 students‟. The quantitative data were taken from vocabulary test as the instrument to find out the students‟ score. The qualitative data taken from diary notes and observation sheet describe the improvement of the students‟ vocabulary mastery of the students‟ vocabulary mastery was mostly improved in every test. The range of improvement of the first test and the last test was 83,33%. The observation sheet and the diary notes showed that the students‟ were interested in the teaching learning process. These finding show that there was an improvement on the students‟ vocabulary through realia that was supported by the result, the mean score of the second test (64,44) was better than mean score of first test (39,17), and the mean score of the third test (78,05) was better than the mean score of the second test. This implies that realia can be an alternative strategy in improving students‟ vocabulary mastery. It is suggested that realia to be used in teaching vocabulary especially to young learners.Keywords: Vocabulary Mastery, Realia Media, Procedure of Teaching Vocabulary.

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the kind politeness strategy in request which represented in speech of Mangupa in Mandailing Wedding Ceremony. The descriptive qualitative method used to gain the findings of the data itself. From that findings, 18 requests from 1 speakers has been analyzed. And from those, 22 requests filtered throught transcribing the event. Of all 22 requests, it was found that there were 7 politeness strategies used, they were Mood derivable, Performatives, Hedged Performatives, Obligation Statement, Want Statement, Suggestory Formulae, Query Prepatory. Later on, the performatives was the dominant type of politeness since the Mangupa was a sacred ceremony, the using of prformatives would be found in many ways. The instrument of this study was recording the event from video recorder and transcribing them into list. And from that list, the categorization would be easy to exctract the data. Thus the writer found that positive politeness that used also similar to another local tribe wedding ceremony.

Abstract

This study focused to improve Students’ Vocabulary Achievement by Applying Anagram Plus Flashcards. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this study was students in class VII-7 of SMP Negeri 7 Pematangsiantar. There were 32 students taken as the subject. The instrument for collecting data were the test for vocabulary and diary notes, questionnaire sheets, observation sheet, and interview for process of teaching and learning vocabulary. The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis. The result of the research showed that the mean of students’ score in pre-test was 56.41, the mean of students’ score in post-test I was 69.22. The mean of students’ score in post-test II was 76.72. There were improvement of students’ achievement from 56.41-76.72 about 20.31 point and that score (76.72) was excelled the indicator (75).  Based on diary notes, questionnaire sheets, observation sheet, and interview, it found that teaching and learning process ran well. Students were active, cooperative, enthusiastic and interested in learning vocabulary. There were 16 students (50%) agreed that the students active in learning process, 20 students (62.5%) were interested, 20 students (62.5%) were enthusiastic and 19 students (59.37%) were agreed that strategy of learning was effective. It can be concluded that the application of anagram plus flashcards had successfully improved the students’ vocabulary achievement at the SMP Negeri 7 Pematangsiantar.   Keywords:  Improve, Anagram Plus Flashcards, Vocabulary, Data, Achievement
