Abstract

AbstractThis research concerns on improving students’ speaking skill in expressingoffering by using role play technique. The objective was to find out theimprovement of students’ speaking skill in expressing offering. This research wasconducted by using action research method. The subject of the research was Xcstudents of SMA Negeri 1 Stabat. The numbers of students were thirty sixstudents. They were taught speaking skill in expressing offering by using role playtechnique. The instruments used were the examples of conversation, diary notes,interview sheets, questionnare and observation sheets. In analyzing data, the meanof students’ score for the first competency test was 59,5, for the secondcompetency test was 69,4 and for the third competency test was 77,7. Theconclusion is that by using role play technique can improve the students’ speakingskill in expressing offering. It is suggested that teachers to use role play as one ofstrategy to improve students’ speaking skill in expressing offering.Key words: Speaking Skill, Expressing Offering, Role Play Technique

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out how the feasibility of evaluation tools using KAHOOT application and how students respond to the evaluation tools to be developed. The research method used is research and development (R&D) method using the research model of test instrument development. Research instruments used in the form of tests and questionnaires. This research consists of five steps: 1) Gathering data and information, 2) Need analysis, 3) Developing the instrument evaluation, 4) Validating the product, 5) Revising product and presented as a final product. The average score for student works from the mean value from all aspects is 3.6. It could be concluded that the worksheet is categorized as “Very Good” since the position of the mean value was in the interval 3.25 ≤ ???? ≤ 4.00.

Abstract

Abstract This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the effect of applying Group Investigation Method on students’ achievement in reading comprehension. It was an experimental research. The subject was students of Grade X, Senior High School Singosari (SekolahMenengahAtas: SMA), which consisted of 60 students. The research was divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument used to collect the data was reading test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied Kuder Richardson 21 formula. The result of the reliability was 0.77, and it was found that the test was reliable. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant = 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58, t-observed value 4.26 > t-table value 2.00. The findings indicate that applying Group Investigation Method significantly affected the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. So, English teachers are suggested to use Group Investigation Method in order to improve students’ achievement in reading comprehension. Abstract

This research dealt with ConversationalImplicature in Dialogue of Layar TerkembangNovel by Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana based on Grice’sTheory and it was aimed to finding out the types ofconversational implicature, and to describe whythe certain type of conversational implicaturebecomes dominant. This research was conductedby using descriptive qualitative method. Thesource of the data was taken from LayarTerkembang novel by Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana,Then the dialogue of the novel as the data for theresearch. The findings showed that there were twotypes of conversational implicature in theprocedures namely Generalized ConversationalImplicature belong to 33 utterances andParticularized Conversational Implicature belongto 36 utterances. So, the most dominant types ofconversational implicature between the maincharacters in the novel was particularizedconversational implicature because it morecontained ambiguity, implicit meaning, conveyedan additional meaning, and their response did notrelevant with every question and also it cannoteasily to understand what he/she was talkingabout

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was conducted to discover the types of illocutionary acts, the most dominant type of illocutionary acts, the implication of the dominant type of illocutionary acts, and which utterances show the function of stand-up comedy in stand-up comedy performances in Indonesia. It was based on descriptive design by applying both quantitative and qualitative method. This study took ten performances of stand-up comedy which is taken randomly from the internet and there were 1378 illocutionary acts in ten stand-up comedy selected. The findings show that all types of illocutionary acts were used in stand-up comedy and the percentages were: 55.9% of representatives, 22.9% of directives, 16.2% of expressives, 3% of declaratives and 2% of commissives. There was another function of stand-up comedy in addition to entertaining, informing, and criticizing, which is insinuating. The most dominant illocutionary acts type found was representatives. It means, in delivering their material, the comics dominantly convey their belief that some proposition is true and they also indirectly provoke the audience to believe their words. Abstract

This study attempted to improve students’ achievement through Paired Storytelling Technique. This study was conducted by using Classroom Action Research. The subject of the research was class XI IA 1 SMA Katolik Sibolga which consisted of 42 students, but in calculating the score, only 23 students were taken. The research was conducted in two cycles, cycle I consisted of four meetings and cycle II consisted of two meetings. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data (speaking test) and qualitative data (diary notes, observation sheet and interview sheet). Based on speaking test’ scores, most of students’ score in accent, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension kept improving in every test. Based on diary notes, observation sheet, questionnaire and interview, it was found that students were interested in applying Pair Storytelling Technique because it helped the students in improving their speaking achievement. The result of the research showed that Paired Storytelling can improve students’ speaking achievement. Key Words: Improving, Achievement, Speaking, Paired, Storytelling

Abstract

The study dealed with the types of associative meaning in Toba Batak Song. The objectives of this study were to find out the types of associative meaning in Batak Toba song and to find out the meaning of associative in traditional song Batak Toba. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from traditional songs of Batak Toba which were about messages or advices from parents for the children. There were 8 traditional songs of Batak Toba. The study revealed 82 lyrics related to associative meaning. Those 82 lyrics consisted of 28 lyrics in colloctive meaning, 21 lyrics in affective meaning, 12 lyrics in social meaning, 6 lyrics in reflective meaning and 15 lyrics in collocative meaning.The most dominant type of associative meaning used in Batak Toba song was connotative meaning. The associative meaning expressed in traditional Batak Toba songs connotative meaning expressed to receive compliment, old, helpless, children for being aware where they came from, and remember all of the advices. Affective meaning expressed about feeling between parents and children. Reflective meaning expressedto lyrics which have multiple meaning in environment for instance death. Social meaning expressed to class social that happen inside in the lyric. And the last was connotative meaning which expressedthe rightness, and behavior.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts to Improving Students’ Vocabulary achievement Trough Word Webbing Technique. The objective of the study is to discover whether the use of word webbing technique could significantly improving students’ vocabulary. This study conduct by applying Classroom Action Research which was carried out in two cycles in six meetings. The subject of this study of SMPN 4 Takengon, Aceh Tengah which consisted of 40 students. The quantitative data were collected by using observation sheet, questionnaire sheet and diary field. Based on the vocabulary test score, students’ score kept improving in every test. The mean of students’ score cycle (80) was higher than the fist cycle (67,75) and orientation test (55.25). based on observation sheet, questionnaire sheet and diary field, it was found that teaching learning process ran well. The students were more active and more enthusiastic during the teaching learning process in the second cycle than the first one. The result of the research showed that is use of word webbing technique significantly improving students’ vocabulary. Keywords : Word Webbing Technique, Action Research

Abstract

This study deals with the language styles used in “Dilan: Dia adalah Dilanku Tahun 1990” novel by Pidi Baiq. The objectives of this study are to find out the types of language styles, the realization of the types, and the reason why the types of language styles used by the main character in the novel. The study was conducted by using by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from Dilan’s utterances, as the main character, in the novel. The technique of collecting the data was transcribing the data from the novel and then eliminating the data to be analyzed. After analyzing the data, it was found that there were five types of language style used by Dilan with the consultative style for most contributing style (79,4%) of all usage, followed by casual style, formal style, frozen style, and intimate style.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study concerns on improving students’ achievements and to find out whether the cue cards can improve the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. This study was conducted by using Classroom Action Research. The subject and population of this study is the second grade VIII-2 students of SMP Negeri 1 Padang Bolak. The number of the subject was 36 students, consisting of females and males. This procedure of this research was administrated in two cycle and six meetings. The qualitative data were taken from diary notes and observation sheet. The quantitative data were taken from the mean of the students’ score in writing test. Based on the data analysis, the students’ score got improvement in every cycle. In the First Test , the mean of the students’ scores was 52.22 while in Second Test, the mean of the students’ scores was 64.44 and in Third Test, the mean of students’ scores was 75.55. The qualitative data showed that students’ was interested in the using of Cue Card as a media in teaching learning process. The conclusion is that the using of Cue Cards as a media in teaching significantly improved students achievement in writing descriptive text and also impressed the students’ enthusiasm in doing the group work of Cue Cards media to make a text and to express their idea well.Keywords: achievement, writing, descriptive, cue cards
