This research discussed about Feminismin both selected novels PerempuanBerkalung Sorban and The Color Purplewhich aimed at finding out the types offeminism, reason why can the figure ofwomen struggle of feminisms and the roleof women in both of the selected novels.This research was based on Tong’s theory.This research was conducted by usingdescriptive qualitative method. The datawere taken from both selected novelswhich have feminisms, they arePerempuan Berkalung Sorban and TheColor Purple Novel. The findings showedthat there were 28 data, 24 data in types offeminism in Perempuan Berkalung Sorbanand The Color Purple Novel.The dominanttypes from both the novels is LiberalFeminisms in Perempuan BerkalungSorban Novel, because the first characterfrom Perempuan Berkalung Sorban Novelis Annisa who feels unfair treatment shereceives from her family;and there were 4data in the role of women in domesticsector can struggle in PerempuanBerkalung Sorban and The Color PurpleNovel. Abstract This study attempted to improve students’ reading comprehension achievement in narrative text through paired story telling technique. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class XI SMA PAB 1 Medan which consisted of 25 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and every cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments for collecting the data were quantitative data (Reading test) and qualitative data (diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet). Based on reading scores, students’ score kept improving in every evaluation. In the test I the mean was 65.28 in the test II the mean was 71.16. Based on observation sheet it was found that teaching-learning process ran well. Students were active, enthusiastic, and interested in reading. The result of the research showed that applying paired story telling significantly improved students’ reading comprehension achievement. This study deals with improving students’ speaking achievement through public speaking tasks. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class XI AP2 SMK BM Taman Siswa Lubuk Pakam consisted of 32 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and every cycle consisted of four meetings. The instruments for collecting data were oral test for quantitative data and diary notes and interview for qualitative data. Based on the oral test scores, students’ score kept improving in every test. In the orientation test, the mean score was 55.9, in the first competence test, the mean score was 64.4 and in the second competence test, the mean score was 73. The improvement also can be seen from the percentage of the students’ speaking achievement, in the orientation test only 3.13% (one student) got 65 points. In the first competence test 65.63% (twenty one students) got 65 %. It means there was an improvement about 62.5%. In the second competence test 93.75% (thirty students) got 65 points. The improvement was 31.25%. It can be concluded that public speaking tasks could improve students’ speaking achievement. Key Words: Speaking, Achievement, Public Speaking, Tasks

ABSTRACT This study attempts to Improving Students’ Vocabulary achievement Trough Word Webbing Technique. The objective of the study is to discover whether the use of word webbing technique could significantly improving students’ vocabulary. This study conduct by applying Classroom Action Research which was carried out in two cycles in six meetings. The subject of this study of SMPN 4 Takengon, Aceh Tengah which consisted of 40 students. The quantitative data were collected by using observation sheet, questionnaire sheet and diary field. Based on the vocabulary test score, students’ score kept improving in every test. The mean of students’ score cycle (80) was higher than the fist cycle (67,75) and orientation test (55.25). based on observation sheet, questionnaire sheet and diary field, it was found that teaching learning process ran well. The students were more active and more enthusiastic during the teaching learning process in the second cycle than the first one. The result of the research showed that is use of word webbing technique significantly improving students’ vocabulary. Keywords : Word Webbing Technique, Action Research

This study dealt with deixis on Mandok Hata in Saur Matua Death Ceremony. The objectives of the study were to identify the deixis types, to evaluate the realization the use of deixis and to explain the reason for using deixis on Mandok Hata in Saur Matua Death Ceremony. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The sources of data were taken from VCD of Saur Matua. The technique for analyzing the data is descriptive qualitative research. The results of this research showed that the total numbers of deixis classification were 82. There were person deixis (37.80%), place deixis (1.22%), time deixis (7.32%), discourse deixis (3.66%), and social deixis (50%). The use of social deixis became the most dominant types after person deixis of deixis classification. The realization of deixis found on Mandok Hata in Saur Matua was depend the situation in which language is used that affect both how participants used language and how it is received. The reason why deixis used based on the realization of deixis.

ABSTRACTThis study aims at improving the students‟ achievement in writing narrative text through cubing technique. The underlying objective of this study is to investigate whether teaching narrative by applying cubing technique potentially improves students‟ skill. The research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). The population was the 2012-2013 eleven grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Binjai. The number of students was 42, consisting of females and males. The procedure of the research was administrated into two cycles where each cycle consisted of three meetings. Each meeting included four steps namely: planning, action, observation, and reflection. There were two kinds of data collected during the study, qualitative and quantitative data. The instrument for collecting the qualitative data was the writing of narrative test while the qualitative data were gathered by using interview, diary notes and observation sheet. Based on the data analysis, the mean of students‟ score in Test I was 61.85; for the Test II was 73.85, and for the Test III was 80. The qualitative data showed that the students were interested in the applying of cubing technique. The conclusion is that the application of cubing technique in writing narrative improves the students‟ achievement in writing narrative.Keywords: achievement, writing, narrative, cubing technique

The purpose of this study is to find out 1) the types of category shifts that occur in the English-Indonesian subtitled Green Book film, and 2) the reasons for the translation shift in the English-Indonesian subtitled Green Book film. The data were analyzed by descriptive qualitative. The source of data in this research from subtitle english-indonesian subtitle of green book movie. The instrument for collecting data in this research is a documentary technique. the instrument of collecting data are used recorder and analyzed based on theory by Catford (1965). The results of the study show that 1) There are 303 data category shifts in the English-Indonesian subtitled Green Book film according to the results of the study. In total, there are four types of shifts: structure shift (24.8%), class shift (5.9%), unit shift (45.5%), and intra-system shift (which makes up the rest) (23.8%). The reason why the translation shift occurs in the green book movie subtitle is because of the textual equivalent. In translation shift, the shift occurs at the grammatical and lexical levels. Textual equivalent is a translation utterance between the source language and the target language. Some translations have no formal correspondence between the two language code systems. Shift the translation to achieve a good equivalence so that it can produce good and natural translation quality.

ABSTRACT This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the effect of applying skimming technique on Grade XI students’ reading comprehension. It was an experimental research. The subject was students of Grade XI, Private Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas Swasta: SMA) Methodist-7, which consisted of 60 students. The research was divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument used to collect the data was reading comprehension test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied Kuder Richardson 21 formula. The result of the reliability was 0.89. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analyze showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level of significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 60 , t-observed value 3.71 > t-table value 2.00. Based on the reliability of the test, it was found that the test was reliable. The findings indicated that using Skimming Technique significantly affected the students’ reading comprehension. So, English teachers are suggested to use Skimming Technique in order to improve students’ reading comprehension. Keywords: Skimming Technique, Reading Comprehension, Experimental Research.

This research is aimed to analyze the ideology of myth in the equipments used in tingkeban ceremony by using the theory from Martin. The data of this research are taken from the Javanese Tingkeban ceremony presented in Desa Sei Buluh. This study is focused in the process and equipments used in tingkeban ceremony and then analyzing the myth with the meaning of each equipment. The writer conclude if there are 12 equipments which contain of myths and two rituals. Every equipment has its myth that have same purpose that is to throw away dangers of the children and the prospective mother. The ideology of myth in each procession and equipments related to the animism and dynamism belief system that roh (spirit) can benefit human life, as well as can asked for help for human life in this world, and belief that every object, plant or animal has magical powers that can disturb or protect humans. This research is related to the academic study of symbolism as guidance to live a new life in Javanese culture. That tingkeban ceremony is using a variety of tools and devices that are symbolized by jarwa dhosok which is a term in the traditional Javanese society. Tools and equipment are believed to mean more than just an object by its adherents.
