Abstract

This study aims at finding out how film adaptation from l novel Alice Adventures in Wonderland I (1865) to the film Alice Adventures in Wonderland I 2010. In terms of addition, subtraction, and variation on its inherent elements, In the study of scientific social problems, a descriptive qualitative design is used. The researcher discovered that the film had some addition, reduction, and variation changes. These changes are also felt by the readers as a result of the film. The research findings show that there are sixteen findings for film adaptation, three findings for plot, four findings for setting, and eight findings for characters, each of which are divided into intrinsic elements of film and novel Adventures in Wonderland  I.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to improve students’ achievement in writing recount text by using Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) method. This Study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class X students of SMA Swasta Kebangsaan Denai Medan which consisted of 31 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and every cycle consisted of three meetings. The instrument of collecting data were quantitative (writing test) and qualitative data (diary notes, observation, and interview). Based on writing test scores, students’ score kept improving in every test. The mean score of the first cycle was was 68,3, in the second cycle, the mean score was 76. Based on the diary notes, observation, and interview, it was found that teaching-learning process ran well. Students were active, enthusiastic, and interested in writing. The result of the research showed that Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) method could significantly improve students’ achievement in writing recount text. Abstract

The objectives of this study were to analyze the Use of Songs in Learning English to the Students of the Fifth Grade in SD 1 Muhammadiyah Binjai. This study would be a descriptive study, which analyze the use of English to teach English in SD Muhammadiyah 1 Binjai. This study would be conducted by using Descriptive Qualitative Design. Descriptive Qualitative Design was just like other types of qualitative research, these inquiries typically are efforts to understand poorly understood phenomena that do not lend themselves readily to quantification. The song is used in two ways in the teaching of English to the elementary students. In the first way, the teacher organize the procedure of using the song into five steps, they are (1) listening to the song, (2) singing the song, (3) asking the students to sing it in front of the class, (4) discussing about the song, (5) the teacher give the task to the students. Besides that, only three out of the nine reasons that teacher take into consideration in explaining why the teacher taught English by using song the way she did. The three reasons are (1) song is a means of teaching pronunciation, (2) teaching vocabulary, (3) making fun teaching situation.Keywords : Songs, Media, Teaching English, Teacher

Abstract

The study is concerned with the way the writer explores the representation of semiotic in Batak Toba Wedding Ceremony, how semiotic is linguistically represented and the reason of semiotic realization as it is. The research method used in this paper is qualitative research which is related to the grounded theory where the sign is described in the culture of Batak Toba based on Pierce’s triadic of semiotic. Pierce’s theory was used in the frame of cultural semiotic representation and focuses on the words, sentences, which was spoken by the speaker in the Video of Wedding Ceremony RN and HS. The interview was assisted by three interviewees who are the speakers in every ceremony of Batak Toba in Medan. The results showed that Semiotic is not only found in a thing. Semiotic also found in a language. The linguistic representation of semiotic will be found in what language that used by a speaker showed the representation of a sign. The classification of verbal and nonverbal helped the writer to find the representation of semiotic linguistically. There were 5 icons, 2 indexes and 3 symbols found in that ceremony.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aims at finding out whether the application of Word Walls strategy significantly improves the students’ vocabulary achievement. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was VII-5 class SMP Negeri 1 Pagar Merbau which consisted of 25 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The result showed that the improvement of the students’ scores from the first test in orientation test to the third test in cycle-II test. In the first test in orientation test, the mean was 48.48, in the second test in cycle-I test, the mean was 63.68, and the third test in cycle-II test, it was improved to be 79.04. Based on the diary notes, observation sheet, and questionnaire, it was found that the teaching learning activities ran well. Students were active and enthusiastic during the teaching learning process in the second cycle than the first one. The result of the researcher showed that the use of word walls strategy significantly improved students’ vocabulary.Keywords: Vocabulary, Action Research, Word Walls Strategy,

Abstract

This study is about audience response of working women in Hidden Figures Movie which is aimed to reveal the response of the audience about working women in Hidden Figures Movie. This study used the reader-response theory by Rosenblatt (1982). Data were analyzed by using interpretative qualitative method. the interview sheet is used as the instrument to find out the valid data. The study showed varied responses toward the working women in Hidden Figures Movie. The response of the audience is classified into two categories; positive and negative. The finding of this study showed that all the audience response is a positive response. It shows that all the response is support the women who work and having a career. There are the difference between female response and male response toward working women in Hidden Figures Movie where male audience believed that there should be a limitation for married women to work. The difference also shows that the opinion is came from different brain, and absolutely with different thought.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts to improve students’ achievement in writing Analytical Exposition through Debate Technique. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class XI IPA-1 SMAN 1 Pancur Batu consisting of 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and consisted of six meetings. The instruments for collecting data were writing tests as the quantitative data and diary notes, observation sheet, and interview sheet as qualitative data. Based on the writing score, students’ scores kept improving in every test. In the first cycle test, the mean of writing score was 61,67. In the second cycle test the mean of writing score was 71,36. Based on diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that students were actively involved in writing process. The result of the research showed that Debate Technique can improve students’ achievement in writing Analytical Exposition.   Keywords: Debate Technique, Writing, Analytical Exposition, Action research

Abstract

The aim of this study were to figure out the dominant category used by teacher and students and the types of verbal interaction used by teacher and students in learning English at grade XI of MAN Serdang Bedagai. The methodology of this study is descriptive qualitative research. The researcher took two classes (XI-IPA2 and XI-IPS2). The researcher used observational tally sheet, matrix, and audio recording as the instruments for collecting the data. The data were analyzed by using Flanders’ Interaction Analysis Category System (FIACS). The data analysis showed that the teacher more dominant in the classroom interaction than the students. The percentage of teacher talk in class XI-IPA2 was 74.03%, in class XI-IPS2 was 65.60%. The dominant category used by teacher in class XI-IPA2 was lecturing by 31.78%, in class XI-IPS2 was also lecturing by 24.73%. The percentage of student talk in class XI-IPA2 was 20.16%, in class XI-IPS2 was 26.88%. And the dominant category of student talk was student talk-response with 15.11% in class XI-IPA2 and 23.65% in class XI-IPS2. All the types of verbal interaction based on Flanders’ Interaction Analysis Category System (FIACS) occurred in the classroom during teaching and learning process at grade XI of MAN Serdang Bedagai.Keywords: Verbal interaction, teacher talk, student talk, Flanders’ Interaction Analysis Category System (FIACS)

Abstract

This study was intended to describe levels of formality used by Obama and SBY in their interviews.  This  study  was  carried  out  with  descriptive  research.  The  data  were collected with documentary technique and the instrument used was documentary sheet. The data were analyzed by descriptive comparative. The result of the research show that Obama tends to use Casual level (44,78%),  Formal (29,05%), Consultative (26%), and Intimate (0,17%) while SBY tends to use Formal level (49,20%), Frozen (3,16%), Consultative (34%) and Casual (13,83%). So, in speaking Obama is more friendly because sometimes he did  a joke and laugh while SBY is more serious to answer or to response the interviewer’s questions. It is hoped that the result of this study is useful to everyone who wants to study about levels of formality.   Key words : Levels of Formality, Obama’s Interview, SBY’s Interview

Abstract

The study dealed with the taboo words used on Instagram video. The objectives of this study were to identify the types and the effect of taboo words uttered by tiur in his videos on Instagram. The sources of the data were taken from the videos of Tiur Anak Medan on Instagram. This is descriptive qualitative because this study focuses on the analysis of spoken language in social media. This study uses the theory of Batistella as the main theory which explain four types of taboo words, such as Epithets, Profanity, Obscenity and Vulgarity. After anylizing the data, there were 22 taboo words found in the videos. Ephitets was the most dominant taboo words found, then it was followed with obscenity which standed as the second types which the most found and the last vulgarity and profanity had the same number and the least found. Moreover, for the second analysis, It was found that the taboo words became the common words since they were used by the public figure. The taboo words were not the taboo anymore.
