Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop a Pop Up Book as learning media for teaching reading narrative text for tenth grade students at SMA Swasta Raksana Medan. The research method that used in this study was Research and Development (R&D). The subject of this study was tenth grade students of SMA Swasta Raksana Medan. Questionnare was administrated to the teacher and students to get information about students’ need, existing media. It was found that 79% students said that they were bored learning English in reading skill by using textbook. 89% student said that the media that the teacher used was uninteresting and didn’t make significant improvement. 91% student said that they need an  interesting, creative, and innovative media. 89% student said that the media that have been designed was appropriate to use. The instrument of collecting the data used questionnaire to experts from English teacher and  English Lectrurer. Research Procedures was modified into five steps, they were: evaluation and need analysis, media design, validation, revision and final product. The product has been validated by experts (material and media). The data are analyzed by using descriptive technique. The product has been validated by material expert and media expert. For the first expert the media was 83% valid in material aspect, and 90% valid in media aspect. While from the second expert the media was 95% valid in material aspect and 100% valid in media aspect. Based on the validation result, the media develop media was very good and appropriate to be used for teaching reading for the tenth grade students of SMA Swasta Raksana Medan. Keywords: Pop Up Book, Reading, Narrative Text, Scientific Approach, Research and Development (R&D)

Abstract

This study was a descriptive qualitative research. It aimed to describe the content validity of the English summative test items for the tenth grade students at SMK Imelda Medan. This study used documentary analysis in collecting the data. The data of this research were the English summative test items for the odd semester of the tenth grade students made by the English teacher at SMK Imelda Medan in academic year of 2018/2019. The English summative items were classified into five categorizations: interpersonal conversation, transactional conversation, short functional texts, genre, and grammar. Based on the analysis of data, 22 out of 30 English summative test items for the tenth grade students were suitable to the syllabus (73%) with the most dominant topic about transactional conversation (10 items while there were 10 out of 30 items were irrelevant (27%) to the syllabus because the items discuss about the topics that are not irrelevant to the syllabus. Keywords: Summative Test, Content Validity, and Syllabus

Abstract

This study focused on the use of tanslation in teaching listening for the eleventh grade. The aim of this study was to describe the use of translation and analyze the reasons of using translation in teaching listening grade eleventh at SMA Negeri 2 Kisaran. This study was qualitatively conducted that taken from one english teacher of SMA Negeri 2 Kisaran. The data were collected by using recording, interviewing and observing the whole processes of teaching listening. The findings of this study showed that there were 34 times of using translation found during three processes that they were conveying and checking meaning of words or sentences, explaining grammar and classroom management. The reasons of using translation in teaching listening were facilitating communication, teacher-student relationship and the L2 learning. The findings of this study revealed that translation contributed to the study of foreign language teaching especially teaching listening.   Keywords: translation, pedagogical translation, , and teaching listening

Abstract

This study aims to develop English reading materials needed by students of Vocational School and develop English reading materials for students of Light Vehicle Technique based on Problem Based Learning. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R and D) design through six phases; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by experts, revising and final product. It was conducted in SMK Swasta Dwiwarna Medan, especially grade XII. The data were gathered by administering interview and distributing questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which contain English lecturer and the second from English teacher. It means that the developing reading materials categorized as suitable or appropriate for grade XII of Light Vehicle Technique.Key Words: Research and development (R and D), reading materials, Light Vehicle Technique

Abstract

This study aims with reading comprehension of grade ten students of SMA SW Katolik Budi Murni 2 Medan. The objective of this study is(1) describe the students reading comprehension across text of different lexical density and topic familiarity and (2) to find out the effect of lexical density and topic familiarity in reading comprehension. The research was conducted bydescriptive qualitative with non-parametric statistic research. The research was conducted in SMA SW Katolik Budi Murni 2 Medan at the grade ten classroom. the sample of the research were 10 students. The instruments for collecting data used in this research were six reading text with different lexical density and topic familiarity and of reading comprehension test.The result of the analysis showed that: (1) Familiar text is easier to comprehend for the students than the unfamiliar text when they both have low lexical density, while familiar text with medium and high lexical density is the same difficult for the students to comprehend as the unfamiliar text. (2) Text with low lexical density is easier for the students to comprehend than text with medium and high lexical density when the texts are both familiar. While texts with low and medium lexical density is the same difficult for the students to comprehend as the text with high lexical density when the text are unfamiliar.Keywords:Key words : Lexical Density, Reading Comprehension, Reading Text, Topic Familiarity.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to analyze the level of questions in reading exercises of students English Textbook grade X based on Revision Bloom’s Taxonomy. This study would be a descriptive study, which analyze the reading exercises in English for Senior High School Grade X textbook published by Masmedia in 2017 based on the cognitive domain of Bloom’s Taxonomy. The dominant design of this research would be Qualitative method. The data would be collected by using checklist. For collecting data there are four steps, selecting, classifying, coding and the last, the result of the checklist show the percentage of reading question which are referring to the cognitive domain. The findings of this research was the questions in the textbook did not cover all of the cognitive levels which consist of remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating and creating. There was no question belong to creating. Cognitive levels found in the textbook were as follows: remembering got 75 questions out of 115 questions or 65,21%. Understanding level question obtained 14 questions out of 115 questions or 12,17%. Applying level obtained 1 items out of 115 questions or 0.86%. Analyzing level obtained 21 questions out of 115 questions or 18,26%. Evaluating level obtained 2 items out of 115 questions or 1,7% and there was 2 questions belong to creating level out of 115 questions that put elements together to form a coherent or functional whole; reorganize elements into a new pattern or structure. Key words: Revision Bloom’s Taxonomy, Reading Exercises, English Textbook
