Abstract

This study dealt with sign in Ndungndungen Karo. The objectives of the study were to investigate the sign types (icon, index and symbol) used in Ndungndungen nasehat & Adat by using Peirce’s theory. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of this study were 32 Ndungndungen Orang Tua, consisted of 16 Ndungndungen Nasehat and 16 Ndungndungen Adat from the book entitled 375 Ndungndungen Karo by P.Angelo PK. Purba OFM Cap. For collecting data, this study used the method of literature study and interview. The findings showed that the total numbers of sign classification were 59. There were (46%) Icon, (15%) Index and (39%) symbol. The use of icon became the most dominant types of sign classification found in Ndungndungen Nasehat dan adat after the use of symbol and index. The meanings of sign types (icon, index and symbol) found in Ndungndungen Nasehat dan adat to show their politeness in talk and the messages, advices, or as a guidance to their life.

Abstract

This study was about an analysis of Scientific Approach in teaching English classroom. The aimed of this study were (a) to analyze the implementation of the five scientific approach in English language teaching, and (b) to find out how the teachers comprehend the concept of Scientific Approach. The subject of this research were the English teachers of SMA NEGERI 6 MEDAN. This research used descriptive qualitative research. To answer the problems of the study, the data were collected in three ways by observing, recording, and interviewing. The data were analyzed based on Miles and Huberman (1994). The result of this study were the following, (a) the first teacher was implement the observing, experimenting, and communicating process. The second teacher was implement the experimenting, associating, and communicating process. The teachers have not implemented all the five stages of Scientific Approach, (b) it found that the teachers showed lack of comprehension relating to the concept of Scientific Approach.Keywords: Scientific Approach, 2013 Curriculum, Implementation.

Abstract

This study aims with reading comprehension of grade ten students of SMA SW Katolik Budi Murni 2 Medan. The objective of this study is(1) describe the students reading comprehension across text of different lexical density and topic familiarity and (2) to find out the effect of lexical density and topic familiarity in reading comprehension. The research was conducted bydescriptive qualitative with non-parametric statistic research. The research was conducted in SMA SW Katolik Budi Murni 2 Medan at the grade ten classroom. the sample of the research were 10 students. The instruments for collecting data used in this research were six reading text with different lexical density and topic familiarity and of reading comprehension test.The result of the analysis showed that: (1) Familiar text is easier to comprehend for the students than the unfamiliar text when they both have low lexical density, while familiar text with medium and high lexical density is the same difficult for the students to comprehend as the unfamiliar text. (2) Text with low lexical density is easier for the students to comprehend than text with medium and high lexical density when the texts are both familiar. While texts with low and medium lexical density is the same difficult for the students to comprehend as the text with high lexical density when the text are unfamiliar.Keywords:Key words : Lexical Density, Reading Comprehension, Reading Text, Topic Familiarity.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out whether Picture Media by using Recitation Method can improve student’s descriptive text writing ability at nineth-grade Junior High School of SMP Masehi Medan. Research was conducted using action in the classroom. In two cycles, the action was study carried out. Open-ended questionnaires and instrument writing tests were used to analyze the data, along with both qualitative and quantitative methods. The results of this research indicate the students were able to come up with a variety of better methods to begin description when using picture media as a writing prompt. Additionally, the student could check that the right tense was utilized in their writing. Additionally, the students could expand their vocabulary to identify words.

Abstract

This research was conducted to describe the process of increasing students' understanding of comparative degrees through the Grammar Translation Method and to find out whether the grammar-translation method can improve students' understanding of comparative degrees among Medan Pengharapan Private Middle School students. Class I and II students of Medan Pengharapan Private Middle School were the research subjects. Tests and observations are data collection tools. Students are taught using qualitative and quantitative approaches, or classroom action research. Based on this research, it can be concluded that students already understand when taking tests. This was proven when working on the first cycle: 28 students did not understand (below average) the degree of comparison, and after being given the first treatment, this increased to 12 students who understood it but did not understand comparative degrees. After being given the second treatment, only 10 students did not understand comparative degrees.

Abstract

Death is an inevitable part of human life. For the Toba Batak tribe, death is not the end, but a transition to the afterlife. This article examines the depth of Toba Batak traditions and beliefs regarding death ceremonies and the types of death known in Toba Batak culture.  The Toba Batak tribe living in the North Tapanuli region, North Sumatra, Indonesia, has a rich and complex death system that reflects a rich cultural heritage and deep values. Exploring the types of death that are recognized and respected in the daily lives of the Toba Batak people, this article tells how they see the realm of death and respond to it through various ceremonies. Each type of death has a place, from death due to old age to death due to accidents or violence. This article provides an in-depth overview of how the Toba Batak people celebrate, respect and respond to death in everyday life.

Abstract

Pembelajaran bahasa Inggris secara bilingual membutuhkan pendekatan yang mampu memberikan dukungan bahasa sekaligus menyediakan peluang praktik berbicara secara berkelanjutan. Artikel ini menelaah tiga isu utama: penerapan model Project Based Learning (PjBL) dalam konteks bilingual, peran aplikasi Duolingo dalam mendukung perkembangan kemampuan berbicara, serta dampak integrasi keduanya terhadap kompetensi speaking siswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengevaluasi efektivitas penerapan PjBL yang dipadukan dengan pembelajaran bilingual dan penggunaan Duolingo. Metode yang digunakan ialah kajian literatur dengan memeriksa berbagai penelitian relevan mengenai PjBL, bilingual learning, dan digital language learning. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa PjBL menyediakan konteks latihan bahasa yang autentik, sementara Duolingo memperkuat penguasaan kosakata, pelafalan, dan kelancaran berbicara. Dengan demikian, integrasi PjBL, pembelajaran bilingual, dan Duolingo terbukti efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan speaking siswa sekolah dasar.

Abstract

Pembelajaran bilingual di sekolah dasar membutuhkan media dan pendekatan pembelajaran yang mampu membantu siswa memahami bahasa kedua secara natural, interaktif, dan sesuai dengan perkembangan kognitif mereka. Duolingo merupakan salah satu aplikasi pembelajaran bahasa berbasis teknologi yang dirancang dengan prinsip gamifikasi sehingga mampu meningkatkan motivasi, perhatian, dan keaktifan belajar siswa. Di sisi lain, model Discovery Learning menekankan proses belajar melalui eksplorasi, pengamatan, dan penemuan mandiri, sehingga memberikan pengalaman belajar yang lebih bermakna. Artikel ini membahas pemanfaatan aplikasi Duolingo yang dipadukan dengan model Discovery Learning untuk mendukung pembelajaran bilingual di sekolah dasar. Penggunaan Duolingo memungkinkan siswa mempelajari kosakata dan struktur bahasa melalui latihan-latihan singkat yang disajikan dalam bentuk permainan, sedangkan Discovery Learning membantu siswa mengolah informasi yang diperoleh dari aplikasi menjadi pemahaman konseptual melalui tahapan penemuan. Integrasi kedua pendekatan ini memiliki potensi untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bilingual siswa, karena teknologi berfungsi sebagai media stimulus, sementara model pembelajaran memberikan kerangka berpikir untuk memahami bahasa melalui proses yang mandiri dan aktif. Dengan demikian, penggunaan Duolingo dalam Discovery Learning dapat menjadi alternatif strategi pembelajaran bilingual yang menarik, relevan, dan efektif untuk diterapkan di sekolah dasar.
