Abstract

The development of HOTS-based text questions is considered very important to be developed for high school students. based on the objectives of the 2013 Curriculum education unit which states that "The management and implementation of education aims to build a foundation for the development of the potential of students to become human ... knowledgeable, competent, critical, creative, and innovative ..." (PP No. 17 of 2010), then Therefore, it is necessary to develop HOTS-based text questions in order to achieve this goal. HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skill) is a high-level thinking ability that must be achieved by students. This study aims to develop HOTS-based test questions proposed by Bloom's revisions C4 (analyze), C5 (evaluate), C6 (create). This study uses the type of research and development proposed by Borg and Gall (1985). The first stage in the preliminary study obtained data from interviews and documentation studies. In the second stage, the question development process is carried out together with the teacher. Phase three, revising and validating it to match the learning indicators.

Abstract

This research is aimed to analyze the reading questions quality in an English worksheet for grade XI of Vocational High School based on Revised Bloom’s taxonomy. This study is conducted by descriptive method, with qualitative as well as quantitative area. The subject of this study is reading questions which are taken from English worksheet for grade XI published by Surya Grafika Mandiri. Since this study uses observation method, the instruments of collecting data is by using checklist. The result of the checklist was analyzed both as qualitative and quantitative data. These data are the reading questions in English worksheet based on Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. The final result was the quality of reading questions categorized into each types of cognitive domain of Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Abstract

This study aims to find out how is the process of teaching learning descriptive text by using clustering technique for the eighth grade students of SMP Parulian 2 Medan. This study was conducted by using qualitative research. The data of this study were collected by using observation, interview, and survey. the result of observation, interiew, and survey prove that the use of clustering technique in teaching learning process of writing descriptive text was good percentage (83%) of the students were interested and followed every step in clustering technique, In the first step of clustering technique, the teacher introduced clustering technique and all students paid attention. All students  got 3 score (100%), it means 30 students participated well in the process of clustering technique. In the second step, the teacher showed the example of clustering technique and only some students who asked. All the students got 1 score (33,3%) it means only 10 students asked in the process of clustering technique, In the third step, the teacher led the students to generate idea in form of clustering technique. All students focused to generate the idea based on the teacher’s directions in form of clustering technique. All students got 3 score (100%), all the 30 students participated well in the process of clustering technique, in the forth step the teacher asked the students to write the first draft based on the design of clustering technique. All students wrote their own descriptive text using clustering technique based on the teacher direction and the example that had been given by the teacher. All the students got 3 score (100%). From this result, the researcher concludes that both teacher and students participated well in the process of teaching learning descriptive text by using clustering technique for the eighth grade students of SMP Parulian 2 Medan.

Abstract

This study deals with the reading materials development for the first grade students at SMK Multi Karya Medan. The research conducted by Research and Development (R & D). It was developed through six stages; 1) Gathering the data & information, 2) Analyzing the data, 3) Designing a new reading materials, 4) Validating by experts, 5) Revising a new reading materials and 6) Final product. It was conducted at SMK Multi Karya Medan, the subject of this research was X grade students of Computer Network Engineering Study Program. The objectives of this study are to investigate the students’ need and to develop the appropriate reading materials for the students. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 25 students. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which is contained the appropriate knowledge or topic with the Computer Network Engineering study program, syllabus and students’ level. The developed materials are descriptive text. The three topics of descriptive text have been developed, the topics are about Bill Gates, Computer History Museum, and Sillicone Valley. The development of reading materials in descriptive texts are based on Hutchinson and Waters theory through 4 stages, such as; defining objectives, creating the framework, designing the model of reading materials and refining the model of reading materials. The new reading materials are validated by two experts, they are English lecturer and and English teacher. The average scores of validation are 4.3 from English lecturer and 4.2 from English teacher. It can be concluded that the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for tenth grade students of Computer Network Engineering Program.

Abstract

The study was aimed to develop media based on Word Search Maker in teaching writing recount text for grade VIII students in SMP Swasta YPI Dharma Budi Sidamanik. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of the study was Grade VIII of SMP Swasta YPI Dharma Budi Sidamanik. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 30 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result prove that the students’ needs English learning media which can motivate the students to understand about the recount writing. The product has been validated by experts. The result of the product was word puzzle game to be used in mastering the recount text writing. The result of experts’ validation showed that the media was an appropriate media to be used in teaching writing recount text by getting the average percentage of 85,2% categorized as very good.

Abstract

This study focused on investigating the reason and analysing the process the use of translation in teaching reading descriptive text for tenth grade students at SMK Swasta Imelda Medan and SMK Swasta Jambi Medan. This study was qualitatively conducted that taken one English teacher of SMK Swasta Imelda Medan and two teachers of SMK Swasta Jambi Medan. The data were collecting by using video-recording, interviewing and observing the whole process of teaching reading descriptive text. The findings showed that the reasons of using translation in teaching reading descriptive text were facilitating communication, facilitating teacher student relationship and facilitating the learning of L2. In the process of using translation, there were 16 times of using translation found during three processes that they were conveying and checking meaning of words or sentences, explaining grammar and classroom management. It also found that the use of translation was used in the scientific approach activity that observing and questiong were the dominant used of using translation. The findings of the study revealed translation contributed to the study of foreign language teaching especially teaching reading skill.

Abstract

Speaking seems to be the most important  skills of all the four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), because people who know a language are usually referred to as speakers of that language. It is the means through which learners can communicative with others to achieve certain goals or to express their opinions, intentions, hopes, and viewpoints. Speaking is one of the most important skills to be developed and enhanced as means of effective communication. One of language skills that should be mastered by students is speaking. Speaking skill is regarded one of the most difficult aspects of language learning. Therefore, to overcome this problem, the researcher agreed to conduct a study entitled “An Analysis of Students Difficulties in Speaking English at Smp Muhammadiyah 49 Medan”.
