Abstract

CLIL programs at the university level are usually associated with ESP courses, we analyze the case regards to the position of CLIL and ESP in Tourism study. As CLIL programs are promoted to improve students’ language proficiency in English, we explore the importance of language learning in these programs and the implications derived from ESP. Data were obtained from class observation and also lecturer and student views on CLIL expressed in focus groups and a questionnaire. Findings show imprecise guidelines for CLIL implementation. Although we can observe a well-organized shift from ESP to CLIL, lecturer and student perspectives provide useful insights for action that can be taken by ESP course designers to adapt courses to make them more relevant to students’ discipline-related needs. Deal with these findings, we propose engaging in collaboration with content lecturers to advance Tourism Department’s graduates’ proficiency in English.

Some techniques have been applied to help students overcome their difficulties in learning English. This research aimed at improving non-English department students’ listening skill and engagement by using information transfer technique. The design used was classroom action research that consisted of planning, implementation, observation and reflection. The data were taken from the pre-test and post-test results. The instruments used were listening task, observation, and questionnaire. The findings showed that by using transformation transfer of reading text, the EFL students got much better listening comprehension and were more involved in their classroom activities. Thus, more techniques to improve students’ language skill should be implemented.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the productive skills in English. Among the four language skills, speaking tends to be the language skill that seems to be difficult for students to do because it requires students to be able to communicate orally in English. This constraint has led to several studies about the teaching and learning of speaking. To enrich the studies about the teaching of speaking, this paper aims to describe the process of doing a video project by fulfilling all elements of speaking such as grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and pronunciation. The participants of the study are 71 students of the Food Crop Production Program at Politeknik Negeri Jember. By doing the project, students can conduct a series of activities as follows: deciding a topic, working on language aspects, planning the video, drafting, editing, uploading the finished video on the YouTube channel, and giving a score of the video. The results show that by conducting the project, the students learn to write a script with better grammar and vocabulary, understand the task, and pronounce English words correctly and fluently. The video project also encourages the students to learn how to edit videos using editing software. This project also helps students and lecturers do collaborative teaching and learning processes to produce a video with some elements of speaking completely.

Abstract

Case-based Learning (CBL) is an active learning method that uses the type of case or problem discussion regarding the lesson to be studied. Politeknik Negeri Jember (POLIJE) began to apply the case method practice in practicum sessions, especially in the English Study Program. This research tries to analyse the implementation of the case method in that study program which covers four courses: Speaking for Group Activities, Translation, English for Hotel and Resto, and Grammar. Qualitative research design was used to analyse the data collected through classroom observation. The results revealed: 1) in Speaking for Group Activities course, CBL was implemented thorough classroom discussion that were divided into introduction, main, and closing activities 2) in Translation course, CBL was implemented through question and answer session 3) in English for Hotel and Resto course, CBL was implemented through case study and 4) in Grammar course, CBL was implemented though problem recognition. By revealing the previous findings, it is expected that the description of the implementation of CLB in every course would be well explained.
