Abstract

Guangzhou is one of the three most important cities in China with a long history and tradition. This city is a centre of trade and is known as the city of culture. It was one of the places where Islam for the first time spread from Arab to China. One of the evidences of the early spread of Islam to China is the existence of Huaisheng mosque of which it is predicted that the tower was built in the year of 1350 AD. The cemetery of Abu Waqqash who spread Islam to China in the seventh century can also be found in the hill of Guihua in Guangzhou. The people from far away countries such as Arab and Persia admired him and when they arrived in Guangzhou after traveling by sea covering the distance of thousands of kilometers they were proud to be able to pray in front of his tomb.

Abstract

Abstract

In the francophone literature entitled Le Rocher de Tanios, (which is translated into “Cadas Tanios” in Indonesian), there are numerous transformations of the styles. When compared with Cadas Tanios, the styles in Le Rocher de Tanios exhibit several forms of transformations. Those forms may be recognized as the different style and the zero style once the French text has been translated into the Indonesian text. It can also be said that the “x” style in the French text creates a “y” style in the Indonesian text. The x style in the French text may also create the zero style in the Indonesian text. In addition, the zero style in the French text may create the Indonesian “x” or “y” style. However, the other form of Indonesian style in Cadas Tanios has the same style as that in the French style. The transformations of the styles in Cadas Tanios indicate that there are creations and innovations in the translation literature, and in the future the translations of the French literature into Indonesian literature may well benefit from this analysis.

The study uses interdisciplinary approach, which involves economical, historical, cultural, and ecological approaches, besides mimetic approach. The analysis shows that modernization does not only cause positive impacts but also negative impacts, which are stronger. The bad impacts include monopoly, human and cultural conflict, poverty, disharmony, social injustice of mixed marriage, greediness, kidnapping, law breaking, materialistic life, adultery, divorce, and less religiosity. The positive impacts include independence, adaptation, rationality, and efficiency. The problems appear in the novel reflect the inner conflict of the author (Cooper himself). He questions the ideas of modernization brought by immigrants on the Indian land. To him, modernization can only be enjoyed by the upper class of the society. It cannot meet the necessity of the traditional people. The Indians loose some benefits because of the settlement of the immigrants in their land.

Abstract

Javanese speakers classify plants into two major categories which are named by the words of wit and suket in their language. Generally the word wit reffers to large plants while the word suket refers to small plants. However, the size of plants is not the only criterion; there are some small plants which are referred to as wit not suket. In this case, it seems that the function of plants in Javanese society is also another criterion and there are cultural reasons why such plants are classified as wit.
