Abstract

This literary research is primarily aimed at revealing the social impacts of modernizationon the traditional life as reflected in Cooper’s The Prairie. The study usesinterdisciplinary approach, which involves historical, cultural, and ecological approaches,including mimetic approach. The analysis shows that modernization doesnot only cause positive impacts but also stronger negative impacts. The negativeimpacts include human conflict, cultural conflict, imbalanced ecology, poverty, disharmony,social injustice of mixed marriage, greediness, kidnapping, and law breaking.The positive impacts include independence, adaptation, rationality, and efficiency.The problems that appear in the novel reflect the inner conflict of the author. Cooperas the author questions the ideas brought by the immigrants on the Indian land. Forhim, modernization can only be enjoyed by the upper class of the society—the White.It cannot meet the necessity of the people native the Indians. They lose some benefitsbecause of the settlement of the immigrants in their land.

Abstract

Ekosistem lamun merupakan ekosistem laut dangkal yang mempunyai peranan dalam kehidupan biota laut. Salah satu jenis biota laut yang berada di padang lamun adalah moluska. Dari delapan kelas moluska, dua diantaranya sering ditemukan pada ekosistem lamun yaitu gastropoda dan bivalvia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kerapatan lamun dan struktur komunitas Moluska (gastropoda dan bivalvia). Penelitian ini dilakukan pada bulan Mei-Desember 2019 di Perairan Desa Liya Mawi Kabupaten Wakatobi. Pengambilan kerapatan lamun dan struktur komunitas moluska menggunakan transek kuadrat dengan luas area 1 m2 dengan tiga kali pengulangan. Kerapatan jenis lamun di lokasi penelitian tergolong kategori rapat (> 100 ind/m2) dan sedang (50-100 ind/m2). Di Perairan ini, terdapat 259 individu moluska yang terdiri dari 15 famili dan 17 jenis, yaitu 10 famili dan 12 jenis dari kelas gastropoda sedangkan kelas bivalvia yaitu 5 famili dari 5 jenis. Kep  berkisar antara (6,33-19,67 ind/m2), indeks keanekaragaman berkategori sedang (1,47-1,69), indeks keseragaman berkategori tinggi (0,74-0,98), dan indeks dominansi berkategori rendah (0,21-0,27). Struktur komunitas Moluska (gastropoda dan bivalvia) masih dalam kondisi stabil di lokasi studi.Kata Kunci:  Kerapatan lamun, stuktur komunitas, moluska, Desa Liya Mawi

Abstract

This research is primarily aimed at revealing the impacts of modernization on economical life of the Indians in Cooper’s The Prairie. The study uses interdisciplinary approach, which involves economical, historical, cultural, and ecological approaches, besides mimetic approach. The analysis shows that modernization does not only cause positive impacts but also negative impacts, which are stronger. The bad impacts include monopoly, human and cultural conflict, poverty, disharmony, social injustice of mixed marriage, greediness, kidnapping, law breaking, materialistic life, adultery, divorce, and less religiosity. The positive impacts include independence, adaptation, rationality, and efficiency. The problems appear in the novel reflect the inner conflict of the author (Cooper himself). He questions the ideas of modernization brought by immigrants on the Indian land. To him, modernization can only be enjoyed by the upper class of the society. It cannot meet the necessity of the traditional people. The Indians loose some benefits because of the settlement of the immigrants in their land.
