This article attempts to analyse one of Jean Racine’s famous works entitled Phèdre using the feminist post-structuralist approach, which differs from earlier analysis of his dramas by others. As a classical work, Phèdre has frequently been analysed by many scholars using the structuralist approach, thus specifically concentrating on binary opposition synthesis. As a result, the dichotomous understanding of Phèdre has been produced, and in many instances shows the stereotypical effect of women in many aspects of their lives. In this analysis of Phèdre, the feminist post structuralist approach deconstructs that understanding and revealed that power relation is one of the important perspectives that can be used in illuminating meaning within the text.

The paper attempts to demonstrate the interrelationship between literary theory and criticism and Cultural Studies existing in the United Kingdom from 1920s to 1990s. The Liberal Humanism critical movement appearing around 1920s was the effect of the view of culture commonly shared by some intellectuals in the country. They believed that culture belonged to the smaller group of people in a higher social class. The more elite conception of culture was then responded by other groups of intellectuals belonging to the tradition of the Left. The latter held that culture included all activities of people in society regardless of their social class, a notion proposed by the proponents of British Cultural Studies. This then gave birth to another model of criticism called Cultural Materialism. From the discussion, it can be shown that literary criticism and cultural studies in UK during the era were strongly interrelated

The study was conducted in the Madurese community in Kemayoran Baru, Kelurahan Krembangan Selatan, Kecamatan Krembangan, Surabaya Municipality. In the community, violence is perceived to have very noble goals. Violence has social logic and is related to different orientations of life and to expectations to be achieved. Women’s attitude to give in to men was the manifestation of an attempt to reach a noble expectation of building and maintaining a harmonious family. Violence is perceived as part of a normal system of family and considered to be equivalent to the prevailing norms and values. Families have both shared values and conflicting values in social interaction and exchange. To wisely identify the essence of violence, violence should be understood holistically in relation to the constructions of different reasons and motives which contribute to the occurrence of violence.

Many studies about national revolution or freedom war more likely show their view based on the “national” perspective. But recently, It seems to be necessary to see from the local perspective. Only based on the local perspective which elevates the response of local dynamic, the understanding of the National Revolution will be better and having much more complete illustration. The local dynamic can be a reflection of the main territory command, which has autonomous characteristic, and the local events represent the authentic reflection of internal dynamic, although the fluctuation is influenced by outsider. In other words, the events of local dynamics such as the response of the local people to revolution taking place in Sunda Kecil are very relevant to explain the National Revolution which was indicated by the beginning process of forming nation identity toward the modern Republic of Indonesia.
