Abstract

Surat Kecil Untuk Tuhan (A note for God) is a book based on the true story of the struggle of an Indonesian teenage girl named Gitta Sesa Wanda Cantika or Keke against malignant cancer. Keke, who is only 13 years old, is a beautiful, smart girl and a former child singer who was suddenly diagnosed with a rare disease called rhabdomyosarcoma which is a kind of cancer that changes her face just that makes  anyone have difficulty recognizing her. Cancer attacked her face and made her beautiful face look like a monster, the doctor said that she only had a few months to live. Hearing the verdict, Keke's father did not give up, he fought so that Keke could escape the death sentence. The father's struggle to save his daughter was so moving, Keke, who realized that her life would end, then wrote a small letter to God. God gave a gift in her life, and Keke was able to survive cancer for three years even though she finally gave up. This report was made with the aim of seeing how someone who is affected by a rare disease struggles and never gives up against cancer.

Abstract

Peace and order in the community may give its citizens harmonious living conditions but achieving them requires the cooperation of every member of the community as well as the government's implementation of effective policies and programs. Without these, conflicts and disagreements among community members may arise for an array of reasons. These conflicts can lead to negative consequences such as decreased productivity, loss of trust, and even violence. Hence, it is important to understand the root causes of conflicts and implement effective conflict resolution strategies to promote harmony and cooperation within the community. However, communities either do not have the trained personnel needed to properly manage conflicts or lack the necessary knowledge themselves, such as the use of communication skills for resolving conflicts is a problem. Hence, the main purpose of this study is to explore the competence of barangay chairpersons in the Philippines in using oral communication skills to resolve conflicts within their communities. The study adapted the qualitative research design using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) as the specific method. A total of eight (8) participants (3 females and 5 males) via purposive-convenience sampling were catered. After the data gathering using a semi-structured interview, findings revealed that some have confidence in their competence, but others still need improvement. Furthermore, some participants were able to solve majority of the conflicts arises at their vicinities. On the other hand, the participants used a wide variety of skills that helped to effectively resolved conflicts in their barangay and communication skills were commonly used by them.

Abstract

The objective of this Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis study is to gain a deeper understanding of how Freshmen English Major Students in a Philippine Higher Educational Institution experience and cope with anxiety related to oral presentations. Semi-structured interviews were carried out using a group of students who struggle with oral presentation anxiety. The interviews are recorded, transcribed, manually coded, and thematically examined. This qualitative study focuses on examining the students' perception of their anxiety, its causes, coping mechanisms, and its impact on their academic performance and well-being. The results reveal five themes for the encountered problems: (1) apprehension and distress in oral presentations (2) resource scarcity and readiness deficiency results to constrained engagement (3) the spotlight fears and trembling grip on stage (4) medium hurdles like encountering language disruptions and intrusions (5) the struggles with regards to one’s well-being; and six themes for the coping strategies: (1) emotional respite in human connections (2) mental resilience and adaptation (3) the calming rhythm for stress relief (4) harnessing movement and artistry for coping showcases embodied expressions (5) embracing emotional equilibrium through the power of acceptance in coping (6) unique coping strategy and perspective. The findings of this study add to a better understanding of the influence of this anxiety on student progress and assist in designing therapies to help this population's anxiety about oral presentations.

Abstract

The study only includes the randomly chosen students from one of the state universities in Tacloban City, Philippines, in its scope. This study takes into account every aspect of the students' individual personal lives, including their understanding and prior experience with internet memes. For this study, the researchers used qualitative research, especially the survey/interview method. This design will be used by the researchers to examine the influence that an internet meme has on an individual across all social media platforms. Studies that use randomization and the evaluation of interventions are known as qualitative research. The following factors contributed to the researchers' decision to randomize the respondents: (1) easy access to study participants, (2) large/universal sample size, and (3) to be able to identify trustworthy participants who, based on their own experiences, have sufficient knowledge of internet memes. Memes can be used to spread a particular message, serve as a platform for mass communication, and serve as a form of entertainment, according to the study's analysis of data from 26 carefully chosen participants. According to the research, it would be preferable for the reader to understand the meme's meaning because it would make it possible for them to more clearly understand the message or even just enjoy the meme. The reader will be able to understand the content as a result.

Abstract

Effective communication plays a crucial role in the hospitality industry's successful service encounter. Although verbal communication is significant for this role, non-verbal communication is just as significant. However, there's a relatively limited body of knowledge about non-verbal communication in the hospitality and tourism literature. Therefore, the study's objectives are to elucidate the perception of Filipino hospitality management student interns of the roles of non-verbal communication and how its dimensions assist in the service encounters. By achieving the abovementioned objectives, the findings have provided valuable insights to the inadequate knowledge. Using a qualitative approach, specifically interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), target students from Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) taking an internship in Tacloban City. Applying purposive convenience sampling, 18 selected participants who conformed to the criteria were interviewed (semi-structured). The data collected were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's (2021) thematic analysis, followed by Saldaña's (2015) manual coding for the emergence of themes imperative for final conclusions. Findings show that non-verbal communication is an important part of service encounters, promoting effective connections, improving customer satisfaction, and optimizing customer interaction. While the non-verbal dimensions including facial expressions, kinesics, paralinguistics, and proxemics greatly aids by creating exceptional customer experiences and enhancing overall service quality. While the student interns met the customer's demands and forged stronger bonds by effectively utilizing and understanding these non-verbal cues. Therefore, it concludes that non-verbal communication intervention and the assistance provided by its dimensions contribute to successful service encounters and create favorable experiences for both student interns and customers.

Abstract

The study aims to focus on linguistics as it relates to the instruction of the English language will be the focus of this particular piece of writing. It will discuss the role of linguistics in educating those still working on their English language skills. The literature review, often called library research, is the foundation for data analysis. The comparison technique and the descriptive approach are used throughout the data collection process. Due to the discovery, one can realize that linguistics pays attention to the part it plays in the lecture hall. The definitions of applied linguistics, as well as a development in that definition and the return of the essential subject matter to education and teaching, are presented in this article to assess language instruction through the lens of applied linguistic theory. The most recent results from research in applied linguistics conducted on language instruction are presented here. Teaching the English language is used as an example to integrate it with practical language teaching theory, allowing for the creation of relevant teaching experiments. According to the results, applied linguistic teaching theory may raise the students' desire for learning, which may boost the efficiency with which they acquire a second language. The findings show that the theory of applied linguistics should be built on language teaching, that the method of language teaching should be modified, and that improvements should be made to the information transferred to students.

Abstract

Information is central to all forms of human activity no matter the field, be it medicine, agriculture, tourism or engineering. There is the need for exchange of information to ensure completion of tasks. Inefficiency will be the results, where this exchange of information is slow or there is a break down. For this reason, information is regarded as a vital resource that needs to be properly developed, because it has boomerang effect on society. News media ownership assumes different characteristics depending on whether and when it is profitable or politically interesting to own media. When investing in news production is economically beneficial, it typically attracts corporate owners aiming to maximize profit on the public stock market. When investments in news production are politically beneficial, it typically attracts industry, military, or partisan ownership. When news media ownership is not economically beneficial, as has been the development in Western media systems in recent years, it attracts a variety of owners with different motives.

Abstract

This study examined how radio jingles affects the development and ability to form good eating habits amongst undergraduate students of mass communication department, Kaduna state university. It looks at how radio jingles might improve the understanding, and encourage the adoption of good eating habits amongst students of mass communication department, thereby raising awareness and understanding on healthy eating habit. The Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) was adopted as the underlying theoretical framework, while the empirical analysis of scholarly articles, books reports that address the influence of radio jingles on healthy eating habit was adopted as the methodology. Amongst other things, the study found that; the exposure of radio jingles in promoting healthy eating habit led to increase in tension amongst mass communication student to engage in healthy eating behavior. The study concludes that; Radio jingles have the potentials to play a significance role in the development and promotion of healthy eating habit among University students. As such it is recommended that collaboration with local radio stations will enhance the wide dissemination of jingles to reach out to a large audience. Thus, efficacy of jingles in the development of healthy eating habit can be maximized by adopting a multi-channel approach, which includes radio broadcasts, social media, and websites.

Abstract

In the realm of language teaching and learning, Task-Based Learning (TBL) has emerged as a prominent methodology, garnering substantial attention since the 1980s. This approach, characterized by its focus on real-world tasks as the central unit of instruction, has gained popularity globally, notably in English language classes in Indonesia. TBL's emphasis on establishing a purpose for language use and fostering natural meaning in language learning has contributed to its widespread adoption. This paper delves into the ideas and principles that underpin Task-Based Learning, exploring its effectiveness in classrooms. This study aims to elucidate the rationale for teachers to implement Task-Based Learning in the language classroom and to provide practical insights into the effective implementation of TBL during classroom instruction. The discussion unfolds by introducing and describing the key features of TBL, subsequently delving into its characteristics, approaches, benefits, and framework. To achieve these objectives, a comprehensive literature review will be conducted, drawing on scholarly works, empirical studies, and educational reports related to Task-Based Learning. Additionally, qualitative data will be gathered through interviews with language educators experienced in implementing TBL. The analysis will involve synthesizing findings from the literature review and identifying recurrent themes and successful practices through the teacher interviews. The analysis phase will involve a thematic examination of the literature, exploring the various facets of TBL, including its theoretical underpinnings, practical approaches, and observed benefits in language classrooms. The insights gathered from teacher interviews will be triangulated with the existing literature to provide a nuanced understanding of the challenges and successes associated with the implementation of TBL. This holistic approach aims to offer a comprehensive view of TBL in language education. In conclusion, this paper contributes to the ongoing discourse on language pedagogy by advocating for the implementation of Task-Based Learning in language classrooms. By synthesizing theoretical concepts, practical approaches, and the experiences of educators, the study provides a compelling case for the efficacy of TBL. The insights offered herein aim to empower teachers with the knowledge and strategies needed to successfully integrate TBL into their instructional practices, fostering a dynamic and purposeful language learning environment.

Abstract

The study explored the potential of social media for women mobilization to attain community development. Social media has become a very powerful platform that informs and educates its users. Community development is the advancement and progress of a particular community. Women play a vital role in community development. The study seeks to know the effects of social media in mobilizing women as well as examining how social media can help in women empowerment for community development. For the purpose of this study, the Diffusion of Innovation theory was employed to further expatiate the impact of social media for community development. Conclusively, it can be seen as though social media is very essential in mobilizing women for community development. Social media plays a vital role in enhancing community development. However, government should support programs that empower women. It is recommended that Development Agencies and State Ministry of Women Affairs should increase advocacy visits to women in the communities.
