Abstract

This research use quantitative research. This research use purposive sampling to take sample. This research uses one class to interview and test. This research took XII Tourism as a sample, XII Tourism consist of 33 students. After interview and test the result of the research there is students who take an external English course and students who don’t. From all 33 students 15 of them take an external English course and 18 do not take an external English course. In percent form, approximately 45, 45% of students take an external English course and approximately 54, 54% of students don’t. The result of test and interview is the students speaking ability does not completely relate to weather they take an external English course or not. Because when it comes to language, we have to use it to master it. The students have to use it even when they not in class so they will used to using it. The other factor that determined students ability, and there is circle and habits.  It can be conclude that H0 is accepted and Ha is rejected. It is suggested to the future researchers who are interested in deeper studying about how to make the students more excited to learn English especially speaking. The future researchers can use this research as a reference.

Abstract

The purpose of the research is want to know the students’ ability in listening comprehension at second year students of SMK Negeri 1 Betara academic year 2017/2018 and the factors that influence in learning listening comprehension in SMK Negri 1 Betara. The design of this research was quantitative research. The Population was the first grade students of SMK N 1 Betara in academic year 2017/2018. There were 31 students and engineering was taken as the sample classes. The students were given listening test by multiple choices. The students were chosen the questions by knowledge. The information in details in reference. Moreover, it was also proven by the result of the total percentage of the students with    the researcher found zero students with the interval 81-100%. There were that percentage (0%) classified in excellent level. In good level, there were five students that percentage (0%) too. There were twenty six students that percentage (85%) in sufficient level. In poor level there were five students that percentage (15%) and zero students who got very poor level and Mean of the students was 52. based on the result of data analysis, it was concluded that generally the students ability in listening comprehension at first grade students of SMK NEGERI 1 Betara in Academic Year2017/2018 was sufficient

Abstract

This study analyzed about conversation obtained from Tangled movie. The conversation or dialogue of the movie of Tangled that speaker must follow conversational maxims. This study is aimed to describe the most frequently of maxim choice used by the main character in the movie of Tangled. In addition, this study is also discuss types of conversational maxim of Grice (1975) of the writer character used the movie of Tangled. The data found 33 data obtained from Tangled movie. Then the data analyzed by using a descriptive qualitative research method. The usage of the number is used to identify the mostly frequent of the maxim used in this study. The data consist of the maxims  are as maxim of quality 10 data , maxim of quantity 12 data, maxim of relation 5 data, maxim of manner 6 data. Those are aimed to cooperative conversation in the social life activity. This study can be concluded that the number of data found is 33 data. The maxim of quantity 12 data is the most frequently used in the dialogue. This shows that in the cooperative conversational in the social life activity is maxim of quantity. So, this study can be aimed that in daily conversation, quantity is very important to be used because this maxim is concerned with the amount of information an utterance conveys.The suggestion to the future researcher who interested in this area of pragmatics.

Abstract

This study analyzed about extrinsic motivation student in SMA N 10 Kota Jambi. This study is aimed to know about the factor extrinsic motivation student in SMA N 10 Kota Jambi. After giving the questionnaire, the data are analyzed by using a descriptive qualitative research method. The usage of the qualitative is used to know about the extrinsic motivation student in SMA N 10 Kota Jambi. This study can be concluded from 92 students. From the results of questionnaire we know that the largest percentage is student who answered agree and the second largest is students who answered strongly agree, than disagree and strongly disagree. So we can know that extrinsic factors can greatly influence students’ motivation   in learning

Abstract

This research used qualitative research. The researcher used personality traits teory to analysis main character in Cinderella movie. After watching movie and read the script, the reseacher concludes four points from five points of personality traits that areoppeness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness of Cinderella as main character in the movie. That are likes to meet the new people, independent, humble, friendly, enthusiastic, keep the spirit, loving, care, seccumb, helpful, forgiving. It can be concluded that Cinderella is only classified into four types out of five, and it is explained by the behavior and dialogue in Cinderlla movie. It is suggested tofor the future researchers who are interested in deeperstudying about character and characterization of the movie especially on the similar movie. The future researchers can use this research as a reference.

Abstract

This research is to analyze the learner’s needs of English for Specific Purpose (ESP) at SMK N 1 Betara especially in engineering program because English is important for students. In English for Specific Purpose (ESP), English is taught to meet the English needs in area of specialization. The needs in area of specialization are worth considering since the language we speak and write varies from one context to another. The purpose of this researcher wants to examine the learner’s needs of English for Specific Purpose (ESP). This research applied a mixed-method. The combination of both quantitative and qualitative research targeted students of SMK N 1 Betara in engineering program especially in tenth grade with 31 participants. The result of this research in students’ English language course preferences 41,9 % want to learn English accordance with the material they need in engineering. In students’ results regarding the language aspects of the English language course, more than half of students (61,3 %) want to learn English more specific, it means they wanted English lesson associated with their department of engineering that can be useful as in the job.

Abstract

This study was intended to find out the s\students problem of learning English listening. The research method used qualitative method and questionnaire design. The population of this study was second grade students of SMA N 8 BATANGHARI JAMBI which consisted of 5 classes with 152 students divided into 69 men and 83 female. Tthe researcher only took randomly 5 class XI MIA 1, 5 class XI MIA 2, 5 class XI IIS 1 , 5 class IIS 2, 5 class IIS 3. The data of this research was collected by giving the questionnaire to students as the sample. The collected data were analyzed by using likert scale. After conducting the research, the researcher found that the problems in listening SMAN 8 as follows: 1) Difficult when students listen to the text just one time students need to practice their listening skills to capture text ideas, 2) listeners also need to take notes while listening to long listening texts. Students often ask to stop recording where there is a sound coming from the corridor or from another classroom. They feel more comfortable if the listening test is done in some places dedicated to listening like lab listening. Listening is one of the important skills in learning English. In addition, there are also three other components such as speaking, listening and writing. For students, it is recommended that they should improve their listening skills on time, so that students can perform tasks easily and correctly in the classroom.
