Abstract

This research describes the implementation, challenges, and solutions of multicultural education. This research is library research. The analysis shows that multicultural education promotes equality in schools to develop students' attitudes toward diversity and living together in harmony. Multicultural education is a reform movement aimed at providing equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their ethnicity, culture, language, religion, race, or class. It is crucial in Indonesia, where the school system is a social system with individuals from different backgrounds united. The success of multicultural education depends on the desire and care of the school community, especially teachers. Teachers must innovate to teach multicultural education, aiming to increase student motivation and tolerance towards diversity. In a multicultural classroom, all students from different cultures and languages have equal educational opportunities. Learning reflects culture, experiences, perspectives on linguistics and culture of a group, as well as respect for differences and student cultural similarities. Having a positive attitude towards differences can bring individuals into the community and bring the community into the wider world community. However, challenges during the implementation of multicultural education may. Indonesia's education policy should promote a democratic, egalitarian society that respects the values of humanity and equality, and values differences.

Abstract

This research paper investigated the problems faced by the students in speaking English outside the classroom. The population of this research is all of the English Department students of Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Ar- Raniry. The samples are the students starting academic year 2021. This research was conducted to study the perception of the students’ problems faced in speaking English outside the classroom. A mixed-methods approach adopted to gather comprehensive data and insights. The primary data collection methods included observation and questionnaire. Two main problems are faced by students: linguistic and non-linguistic issues. There are five elements occur in linguistic problems:(1) Vocabulary, (2) grammar, (3) pronunciation, (4) comprehension, and (5) Fluency. While non-linguistic problems are: (1) self-confidence, (2) embarrassment, (3) lack of partners, (4) and pride. In addition, this research also found the percentage of English being used based on students’ perception in English Department of language teaching. It showed 46 % of the environment, 30 % of the staffs and the lecturers, and 24 % of the students.

Abstract

Writing is the ability to articulate and express ideas or emotions that arise in the mind in the form of words, phrases, and paragraphs. Throughout the writing process, some students have expressed that learning to write feels tedious and unimportant to them. When teaching writing, there are numerous strategies that must be employed to promote written communication among students. Collaborative writing is a strategy that can be employed in pairs or groups and has been proven to be effective in addressing students' writing challenges. A short story is a type of concise fiction, considering the events portrayed, the content of the story, the number of characters, and the word count used. This research aims to determine the influence of the collaborative method using short stories on the improvement of students' writing skills in one of the the SMK PGRI in Tangerang Kota. The variables in this research are the collaborative short story method and writing skills. This research falls under the Quasi-Experimental category and employs a quantitative approach. In this study data was collected from a sample of 70 students. The research hypothesis was tested using the Wilcoxon test, and the conclusion drawn is that there is a influence of the collaborative short story method on students' writing skills. Abstract

Instagram is now a worldwide photo and video-sharing social media platform, and English is increasingly used in captions by non-English speaking Instagram users. With this known, this study aimed to determine the students' reason at Universitas Kapuas using English as a caption on Instagram. This study involved 22 students of Universitas Kapuas. The research design used was a qualitative descriptive. Data collection used an interview consisting of five questions. The researchers also used observation to triangulate the data. The results of this study stated that students use English captions on Instagram, which were influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The results showed that intrinsic factor was the highest. More than 50% of the students or participants used the intrinsic factor in writing English caption. The intrinsic factor included was the need for learning English. While for extrinsic motivation, the respondents mentioned that using English as a caption looks cool and aesthetic.

Abstract

As a lingua franca, English is utilized by most people in all parts of the world. In Indonesia, English teaching needs rejuvenation, restorations, and more in an attempt to reach the expected proceeds. When the condition is implemented, the moral probe is proposed to the English teachers to undertake the subject in a better and more effective way. Speaking skill plays the most prominent role in human communication. In teaching this skill, English teachers should pay more concern to make the student relish communicative competence which desires help the student to be able to communicate in spoken language communicatively. Nevertheless, teaching speaking is not a convenient task. EFL teachers find it troublesome to inform students to get involved in speaking skills. Several learners have the right capability in the grammar structure but they are not skilled in speaking communicatively. They are competent to speak with correct grammar but they are not powerful to say something suitable in the social context. Also, some other students are still misled in comprehending an individual message which is stated through spoken language. So, they have a low motivation to speak English. To help students attain communicative competence in speaking skills, English teachers can apply Task-Based Instruction (TBI) in the classroom. Abstract

Language and literature are essentially connected, and one cannot function without the other. Thus, this study analyzes the language functions used by the main characters in the short story The Summer Solstice by Nick Joaquin. This study aims to determine the types of Language functions in the short story and identify the most dominant language function used by the main characters. Moreover, the study also aims to analyze the context of the language functions identified. The researchers used Janet Holmes’ Theory of Language Function (2013) to analyze the utterances of the main characters and Dell Hymes' SPEAKING Model to analyze the context of the language functions in each utterance. The researchers then applied the descriptive qualitative design to systematically analyze the data. The result of this study shows that out of the eight (8) language functions identified by Janet Holmes (2013), only seven (7) types of language functions were found in the short story, namely expressive, directive, heuristic, referential, metalinguistic, phatic functions. On the other hand, poetic function was not found in this research. The findings revealed that this story dominantly uses expressive functions, in which the speaker's emotion is what captures the interest of the readers.
