Abstract

This article explores the development of sociolinguistics as an interdisciplinary field that examines the relationship between language and society. Sociolinguistics emerged from the integration of linguistics, which studies the structure of language, and sociology, which investigates the structure of social interaction. The aim of this study is to describe how language is used in specific social contexts and how social, cultural, and psychological factors influence language use. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a library research approach. Data were collected from books, scholarly journals, and works by prominent scholars such as Ferdinand de Saussure, Dell Hymes, and Joshua Fishman. The discussion includes the definition of sociolinguistics, its historical development, and the scope of study, including language variation, code-switching, code-mixing, social identity, and the role of language in social institutions. The findings show that sociolinguistics plays a vital role in bridging our understanding of linguistic dynamics and social interaction. Beyond its theoretical significance, sociolinguistics also offers practical benefits in education, language policy, and intergroup communication within multilingual societies.

Abstract

SAARC, the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, was formed in 1985 to build cooperation among South Asian countries and improve life for people across the region. Over the years, SAARC has worked on issues like poverty, trade, education, health, and disaster management. But despite these efforts, progress has often been limited by political tensions especially between India and Pakistan and by weak institutional structures. Still, SAARC has had some success and holds great promise for the future. This research explores how SAARC is structured, what it has achieved so far, the challenges it faces, and the opportunities it still has to become a stronger force for development and peace in South Asia.

Abstract

This paper examines how Zainul Abedin's 1943 Bengal Famine sketches function as visual testimony in the formation of Bangladeshi national memory. Drawing upon testimony theory, postmemory studies, and visual culture analysis, this study argues that Abedin's ink drawings operate not merely as historical documentation but as performative acts of witness-bearing that have become foundational to collective remembrance of colonial trauma and postcolonial identity formation. Through close analysis of three representative sketches and examination of their circulation in museums, textbooks, and public discourse, this research demonstrates how visual testimony can transform immediate documentation of catastrophic events into enduring sites of national memory. The paper contributes to scholarship on art as historical evidence while illuminating the specific mechanisms through which visual culture participates in the construction of collective identity in postcolonial contexts.

Abstract

The study investigated the examination bodies’ compliance with ethics and social responsibility in high stake examinations from the testees’ perspectives. The study used ex-post facto design. Simple random technique was used to select two thousand and five hundred respondents drawn from two states in South-Western Nigeria. Testees’ Response to Ethics and Responsibility Questionnaire (α = 0.862) was the instrument used to collect data. Frequency count and Analysis of variance ANOVA were used to analyse the data collected. The level of compliance varies across the examination bodies as responded by the testees [F(2,2498) = 13.256; p < 0.05] in favour of WAEC testees (M=15.32; SD=2.37) followed by NECO testees (M=12.99; SD=2.62) and lastly NABTEB testees (M=12.98; SD=2.55). It was found out that the difference was only significant for WAEC using pairwise comparison while the difference between NECO and NABETEB was not significant. Three public examination bodies were studied and the compliance with ethics and social responsibility may not be generalized beyond this context. The type of examination undertaken by testees varies in the way and manner in which they comply with ethics and social responsibilities in assessment. For high ethical and social responsibility in high stake examination, there is need for total compliance. Therefore, examination bodies that are non-compliant with ethics and social responsibility in assessment should seek ways of improving their development and administration of test items along that line.

Abstract

Introduction: In-service teacher training that explicitly addresses metacognitive and socio-emotional dimensions is essential for reimagining mathematics teaching in the 21st century. This multiple case study examines how a situated professional development program in mathematics education fosters reflective practice, emotional engagement, and didactic-mathematical competencies in two primary school teachers working in rural and semi-urban schools in Panama. Methods: Within the framework of the EDEM diploma program, based on the Didactic-Mathematical Knowledge and Competencies Model (DMKC) and the Onto-Semiotic Approach, we implemented a qualitative multiple case study design. Data included written responses to pedagogical tasks in four modules, reflective essays, video presentations of each teacher's final project, and institutional feedback. A deductive coding scheme based on the six dimensions of the DMKC (epistemic, cognitive, affective, interactive, mediational, and ecological) was combined with an inductive thematic analysis of metacognitive regulation (planning, monitoring, and evaluation) and socio-emotional practices (empathy, resilience, and classroom climate). Three researchers independently coded the corpus and achieved inter-rater reliability (Cohen's kappa > 0.85). The study received approval from institutional ethics committees and the Panamanian Ministry of Education. Results: Both teachers showed development in epistemic, cognitive, and affective dimensions, with more modest progress in the mediational and ecological dimensions. They increasingly articulated self-regulated teaching cycles by planning lessons aligned with learning objectives, monitoring student thinking, and evaluating their pedagogical decisions. Socio-emotional evidence indicated greater empathy, concern for students' emotional safety, and resilience in the face of infrastructural and curricular barriers. The cross-case analysis revealed distinct DMKC profiles: one teacher excelled in maintaining classroom dialogue and developing strong relationships with students, while the other showed more pronounced progress in the cognitive and mediational dimensions, particularly in lesson design and the strategic use of teaching resources. Discussion: These findings suggest that professional development experiences based on daily practice and theory can jointly strengthen metacognitive self-regulation and socio-emotional competence in mathematics teachers. This growth appears to strengthen teachers' sense of empowerment and emotional commitment to their work. The study illustrates how contextualized programs like EDEM can foster systematic reflection on teaching and offer an analytical and humanizing process through which teachers examine their decisions, emotions, and interactions to strengthen their professional capacity and improve student learning experiences.

Abstract

This study focused on the development and application of Item Response Theory (IRT) in calibrating Civic Education test items for secondary school students in Zamfara State, Nigeria. The objectives were to develop a valid test instrument, apply IRT to evaluate item psychometric properties, and assess the effectiveness of the calibrated items. A representative sample of 378 students was selected using stratified random sampling. The test instrument was constructed based on the secondary school Civic Education curriculum and reviewed by experts to ensure content validity. Calibration was performed using the two-parameter logistic IRT model, estimating item difficulty and discrimination while assessing overall reliability. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, t-tests to compare conventional and IRT-based test performance, multiple regression to examine relationships between item parameters and student scores, and item fit evaluation to determine validity. Results indicated that students performed significantly better on the IRT-calibrated test, with item difficulty and discrimination significantly predicting performance. The instrument demonstrated high reliability (α = 0.89) and acceptable fit statistics, confirming its effectiveness and validity in measuring Civic Education knowledge. These findings suggest that IRT-based assessment provides precise, reliable, and equitable evaluation of student ability, offering a valuable tool for educational measurement and instructional planning in Nigerian secondary schools.

Abstract

Humans basically have a tendency towards actions that favor virtuous values, but in the process of development, humans are greatly influenced by their environment. Allah Himself has outlined that within humans there are tendencies in two directions, namely actions that deviate from the rules and those that obey the rules. Apart from having the tendencies mentioned above, humans also have the freedom to choose between two paths, namely the right and the wrong. Therefore, humans can make mistakes in choosing and evaluating good actions, due to lack of knowledge and environmental factors. Considering the possibility of human error or error in choosing and evaluating good deeds, Allah teaches humans about goodness by mentioning and informing them through the Koran which was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in several terms. Among these terms is the word ihsan and other terms. To go more deeply into the Qur'an's insight into ihsan, this paper will discuss the Qur'an's insight into ihsan or goodness.

Abstract

The rising number of elderly Hajj pilgrims in Indonesia necessitates that Hajj organizers implement service management practices that are more inclusive, adaptive, and pilgrim-centric. This study aims to analyze elderly-friendly Hajj service management, examine the implementation of human-centered service principles, and formulate a human-centered service model for elderly-friendly Hajj services at the Banyumas Regency Hajj and Umrah Office. A qualitative, descriptive research approach was employed, with the study conducted at the Banyumas Regency Hajj and Umrah Office. Informants were selected via purposive sampling: H. Abdul Malik (Head of the Administration Sub-division), Heri Isnaeni, S.H. (Head of the Hajj Service and Hajj/Umrah Economic Ecosystem Development Facilitation Section), and Laila Azizah, S.Ag. (Head of the Hajj and Umrah Guidance and Supervision Section). Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and document review, and subsequently analyzed using the interactive model developed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, comprising data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that elderly-friendly Hajj service management has been implemented through the strengthening of administrative systems, priority services, health screenings, pilgrim guidance, coordination with Hajj and Umrah Guidance Groups (KBIHU), and continuous service monitoring. The human-centered service principle is realized through pilgrim-oriented services, simplified procedures, clear communication, intensive assistance, the provision of elderly-friendly facilities, and service evaluations based on pilgrim experiences and feedback. This study produced a human-centered service model for elderly-friendly Hajj services, comprising seven key components: (1) service planning based on the needs of the elderly, (2) an adaptive administrative system, (3) preventive healthcare services, (4) integrated support, (5) inclusive communication, (6) multi-stakeholder collaboration, and (7) continuous monitoring and evaluation. By placing elderly pilgrims at the center of service delivery, the model enables the implementation of Hajj services that are professional, inclusive, humane, and sustainable. The findings are expected to serve as a reference for developing policies and innovations regarding elderly-friendly Hajj services, both in Banyumas Regency and in other regions.

Abstract

This study discusses contemporary learning based on the problem solving model as a strategy to improve student activeness in modern education. Technological developments and changes in students’ characteristics require innovative learning approaches that are no longer teacher-centered but place students as the main subjects in the learning process. The problem solving model is implemented through several stages, namely understanding problems, planning solutions, implementing problem solving, and evaluating the results obtained. This study employed a qualitative approach with a library research method by collecting data from books, scientific journals, articles, and previous studies relevant to the research topic. Data collection techniques were carried out through documentation and literature studies, while data analysis used descriptive-analytical methods. The results indicate that problem solving-based learning can improve student activeness, critical thinking skills, creativity, communication, collaboration, and learning outcomes. In addition, this model creates a more interactive, contextual, and meaningful learning atmosphere. However, its implementation still faces several obstacles, such as students’ low readiness, limited teacher competence, inadequate learning facilities, and limited instructional time. Therefore, support from teachers, schools, and the use of learning media and technology are needed to optimize the implementation of the problem solving model. Thus, contemporary learning based on problem solving becomes a relevant strategy to improve the quality of education and 21st-century skills.
