Abstract

The main challenge in Indonesian urban conservation efforts is to determine how changes can meet our current needs without jeopardizing its unique character. Cakranegara, Lombok is one of the towns that have unique character and concept for its spatial organization. This research seeks to define the character of Cakranegara by outlining the spatial city concepts in relation to the physical character based on the socio-cultural and religious principles using questionnaires, mental mapping, visual survey and interviews. The results indicate that the grid pattern, settlement blocks and the positioning of the east-west temples have become the specific character of the city. Findings suggest that cosmological philosophy that emphasizes on the relationship between human and nature is used to determine the spatial organization. This relationship is observed in the placement of the three temples which symbolizes the spirit, the dwellers as the energy and the settlement territorial as the vessel. The study concludes that the basic principles of socio-cultural and the socio-religious beliefs had created the spatial concept of this historic town.

Abstract

Writing a research paper does not only use three steps, such as analysis, explanation and conclusion, but it may also use analogy. It assumes two phenomena, individual or inter-related, similar. Analogizing method uses historic, ethnographic, and experimental sources. Experimental analogy, in particular, is done by duplication. For example, it is conducted by making a stone tool, which implies that there is a collective knowledge about the characteristics of the raw material and their relations to human. Despite the fact that prehistoric archeological remnants, such as the rectangular adze, were found in different areas in Indonesia, there had not been many who knew about process of making them, and the people who used them. The experimental duplication was done repetitively, gradually, and systematically. Repetition of the production of rectangular adze is made in order to be able to draw a general conclusion. The raw materials that are used are chert, metalimestone, limestone, chalcedony, jasper, and obsidian. A rectangular adze is produced after some steps are taken: firstly, preparing the raw material and the tool, secondly, shaping, and thirdly, molding.

Abstract

The Dayak people of Kalimantan, who have occupied in the territory of Kutai Sultanate, the water kingdom along the riverbank and the upper course of the Mahakam, live by trading in the river ways. The Dayak people consist of eleven tribes; the Kenyah, Kayan, Bahau, Tunjung, Benua, and Bentian, were only some of them. They were governed under the sovereignty of the Sultanate of Kutai which had made easier for the colonial government to subdue the territory. However, the people of Kutai found ways to accept the Dayak, and vice versa. They sold forest produce, such as resin, birds’ nests, rice, and wax. At the time when the Dutch annexed the area under her state, the Dayak was prohibited to do business, and the Dutch became the sole proprietor of the region, exploiting rattan besides others.

Abstract

An American philosopher, Thomas Samuel Kuhn (1922-1996) in his books, The Structure of Scientific Revolution (1962) and The Essential Tension; Selected Studies in Scientific Tradition and Change (1977) poses a paradigm of a universal foundation of science which uses a common fact, method, language and criteria. He does not think that even in the realm of the natural sciences, there are differences, more so that there is a paradigm in the humanities including the arts and literature. Kuhn, however, has established a new paradigm for the philosophy of science which he called “the sociology of science” or a social construction, which now is popular as a constructive paradigm. It is developed in the Critical Theory of Adorno, Horkheimer, and Habermas, and in the Postmodern Theory of Lyotard, Derrida, Foucault, and Baudrillard. The paradigm of the social-political and cultural discourses of the seventies, has developed from structuralism of Saussure and Levi Strauss to post-structuralism or deconstructionism of Jacques Derrida and Paul de Mann referring to contemporary or postmodern era. It rejects stable understanding, logocentrism, antibinary, and gives readers ways to understand a text. The methods used is interpretative paradigm, such as philology, Marxist, new historicism, structuralism, psychoanalysis, theory of acceptance, semiotics, deconstruction, and discourse analysis.

Abstract

The research deals with the region in the two-area Kalimantan/Borneo border with Malaysia; in the east, Nunukan, and in the west, Entikong. The border problem rises when a geopolitical interest of Indonesia and Malaysia overwhelms the traditional ways of farming and trade that have existed even before the British and Dutch colonial governments executed their administrative systems by dividing them into security and prosperity belts, despite the existing active roles of local authorities to manage their resources. Now, the heritage of the rich natural resources and the mobile population, becomes a major issue of dispute. The available resources, such as fish, coal and gold; crops, such as chocolate, nutmeg and rubber; prospective reservation areas for tourism, such as the Indonesian national parks in Danau Sentarum, Gunung Niut, and Betung Karihun, become a vulnerable target for exploitation. These crucial zones have been a part of an intricate interwoven eco-region. The paper uses the colonial British and Dutch archieves and other literature to describe the historic conflict of interest for exploitation and extraction of the resources, and the post-independent sources which talked about the endless Malaysian intrusions faced by the Indonesian government.

Abstract

The paper is about the historical efforts made by the Chinese Qing dynasty up to the current government to bond the Chinese overseas throughout the world to funnel their financial gain to the homeland. It shows that the policy to take advantage of the Chinese overseas to send their revenues to develop China, was adopted even during the nationalist governments. However, the analysis poses the strong reason of the tie of the Chinese overseas to the homeland, that it was not only given just for its financial support, but that it has been generated by a strong sense of cultural connectedness. On the other hand, although, culturally, the Chinese are attached to their cultural heritage, efforts to force the Chinese overseas to continually support the homeland were not that successful. In the nineteenth century, the Chinese in Indonesia during the colonial time, have been granted by the emperor, a double citizenship. But after the Mao downfall, some of the Southeast Asia countries, including Indonesia, has opposed communism in the region, thus rejected the policy. The republic of Deng finally revoked the doublecitizenship policy and as a result, encouraged promotion of teaching Chinese language overseas and sending scholars to study abroad.
