Abstract

Water pollution in Yogyakarta has a long history dating back to the colonial era in 1926. Therefore, the main issue addressed in this writing is why water pollution occurred in Yogyakarta from 1926 to 1942. Basically, there are two factors influencing water pollution, namely natural factors and human factors. Using a historical research method, this study aims to examine water pollution in the Yogyakarta region, so that the government and the community can seek solutions. The sources used include collections from Algemeen Handelsblad voor Nederlandsch-Indie, De Locomotief, De Nieuwe Vorstenlanden, De Preanger Bode, and contemporary newspapers. The research findings on water pollution in Yogyakarta from 1926 to 1942 reveal that water pollution in the Yogyakarta region began when the population density increased. The arrival of the Dutch and Eastern foreigners increased the population, and their basic needs led to the pollution of clean water. Human needs caused the exploitation of natural resources, particularly water and human resources in Yogyakarta.

Abstract

France embraces diversity in terms of religion, race, and ethnicity in its society. The arrival of migrants and foreigners, especially in the post-Second World War period contributed to France’s current demographic landscape. In dealing with the influx of population, France has adopted various immigration policies, as stated on the website of the Ministry of the Interior and Overseas, but has not significantly improved the current situation. As the immigration issue has continuously become prominent in French society, this research takes on comparing the policies carried by the governments of François Hollande and Emmanuel Macron on the issue while also taking into account their different political axes. Thus, the purpose of this study is to analyze the political discourses embedded in the immigration policies between the Hollande and Macron administrations. This research makes use of available sources from the immigration policies of both governments during their five years in office. The data was collected by employing qualitative research methods by Iosifides combined with critical discourse analysis theory by Norman Fairclough and the concept of political ideology by D. Parenteau and I. Parenteau. The findings of this research suggest that Hollande's leftist orientation contributed to his pro-people (immigrants) immigration policy, while Macron's center orientation attempted to tighten the immigration policy towards foreigners.

Abstract

After the collapse of the Sunda Kingdom in the 16th century, most of its territory was controlled by the Islamic Mataram Kingdom. The occupation of Islamic Mataram in the ethnic Sundanese area in fact left behind several metal inscriptions known as piyagĕm. This study specifically examines the oldest piyagĕm found in the Priangan area, namely Piyagĕm Cikĕruh from Garut Regency. Based on the assumption that every inscription that is king is a symbol of power, this study focuses on science which is a symbol of power relations in Piyagĕm Cikĕruh. This study was conducted with the aim of finding the meaning of the symbols of the power relations. The results of this study are then downloaded that Piyagĕm Cikĕruh uses Islamic religious elements and Javanese-Sundanese cultural identity as symbols of power relations. These symbols are related to the meaning of the cultural hegemony of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom towards its rule in Priangan

Abstract

This research discusses the typology of violence in the short stories “Penguburan Kembali Sitaresmi”, “Jemari Nayla”, and “Leteh” by using Johan Galtung’s concept. The analysis also employs an intersectional approach to reveal the social categories that enable violence and to compare the violence across the three short stories. This research shows several findings. Firstly, in the first short story, direct violence (murder) and structural violence (marginalization) occur. In the second story, there is direct violence (sexual harassment) and structural violence (marginalization). In the third story, structural violence (stigmatization) is prevalent. Secondly, all three stories depict violence against women, but they also exhibit distinct patterns. Similarities and differences are based on criteria such as the victims, perpetrators, forms, and causes of violence, as seen in Table 2. Thirdly, the research finds that these short stories emerged during a time when past violations of women's rights remained unresolved and the state failed to take responsibility, while simultaneously, violence against women continued to escalate.

Abstract

Syair Dodaidi, as a form of Acehnese oral tradition, has played a significant role in the social and cultural life of the Acehnese people for centuries. It originally developed as a lullaby sung by mothers to their children, with lyrics containing prayers and praise to Allah SWT. This study aims to examine the transformation of Syair Dodaidi in the context of contemporary Acehnese society. The research methodology uses a historical approach with the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results show that although Syair Dodaidi is still practiced as part of cultural heritage, there have been a number of transformations in the way the poem is maintained and presented en masse. The study observed changes in medium and presentation, but the values contained in Syair Dodaidi - such as character education, spirituality and cultural identity - remain relevant and valued by the people of Aceh. The study reveals that Syair Dodaidi is able to adapt to the contemporary era while maintaining its traditional essence, making it an interesting example of how oral traditions can survive and thrive in the face of changing times

Abstract

The book Anthropology of Cultural Transformation I: Togetherness and Separation by Zhao analyzes cultural change amid globalization and technological advancement. Zhao explores the duality between togetherness and separation in modern social dynamics, demonstrating how cultural identities adapt. Through ethnographic case studies and comparisons with thinkers like Clifford Geertz and Arjun Appadurai, the book invites readers to reflect on the impact of these changes on cultural practices and social cohesion. While Zhao highlights technology's role in fostering connectivity, he also emphasizes the effects of cultural homogenization. This book is relevant for both academics and policymakers who need to support cultural diversity amid global transformation.

Abstract

Serat Yusup is one of the popular Islamic literary works in Java, especially in East Java. This literary work is a handwritten ancient manuscript written in the form of tembang macapat, in Javanese language, and using Pegon or Javanese script. Serat Yusup which create by the students (santri) is inspired by Surah Yusuf, the 12th Surah of the Quran. As a literary work, its story differs significantly from its inspirational text, and there are so many of it. In relation to this, the question arises: what are the reasons behind the creation of Serat Yusup and why is it highly favored by the Muslim community in East Java? This article aims to uncover the popularity of Serat Yusup in East Java. The primary data source for this article is ancient manuscripts; therefore, the appropriate method to study it is philology. From the discussion of its content, it is estimated that there are three reasons for the adaptation of Serat Yusup: it represents Islamic teachings, Javanese culture, and human ideals. In conclusion, Serat Yusup was composed in the form of Javanese Islamic literary work not only for aesthetic fulfilment and creative expression of its student creators but also to spread Islam in East Java.

Abstract

France's post-World War II, thirty years of glory, resulted in the growth of purchasing power among the French, which triggered growth in consumerism, notably among the bourgeois— France's upper-middle-class society. People believed in a myth that objects are not solely useful for fulfilling needs but also served as a sign of social status, dignity, andcomfort. They equally believed that if the objects are consumed and the associated social standards fulfilled, they maybecome a way to obtain greater happiness. This article aims to examine the myth that happiness can be attained byconsumption and social standard fulfillment in a French consumer society in the 1960s. To do so, Baudrillard’sconsumerism theory is used, which is juxtaposed with Barthes' theories of structural text analysis, semiotics, and myth. This article, whose scope is limited by the narrative elements of the text, shows that the attachment of the people portrayed in the text with consumer goods and social standards can gradually sink the subjectivity of individuals and even erode the unique and principal characteristic that humans share; humanitarian values, as well as generating greater distance between human and true happiness itself.
