Abstract

Decades have passed, but female fans who like male idols are still stigmatized, judged, and reduced to exist in society and popular culture. This is also what happened to ARMY, fans of the male idol group BTS. The research uses a qualitative research methodology elaborated through a feminist perspective to discuss how ARMYs are stigmatized because of the perceived inferiority of women and the existence of male domination in society, and also their love for the male group, regarded as the subordinated male group within the circle of hegemonic masculinity. However, the stigma and gender stereotypes attached to them were successfully broken. As a female fan group, ARMY realizes that humans are essentially free creatures who always make choices in their lives that will shape them as authentic individuals. With this full awareness, they take action through fan labor practices and fan activism, which leads them to optimize Creative Power.

Abstract

The sedulur sikep community is a collection of individuals who practice the sedulur sikep teachings, which contain the noble values of life, such as the value of humanity, the value of love for the homeland, and the value of love for the universe. The sedulur sikep community also has traditions and customs as its local wisdom. Globalization marked by the development of science and technology causes changes in various aspects of the life of the sedulur sikep community, such as changes in the religious system, changes in increasingly modern technology, and changes in traditions or customs. This article aims to explain the changes in the era of globalization and explain the adaptation strategies carried out by the sedulur sikep community in Klopoduwur Village to deal with these changes. This study uses qualitative research methods with descriptive-analytical writing presentations. The results of this study indicate that the sedulur sikep community in Klopoduwur Blora Village adapts in the era of globalization through 1) acculturating religious elements, 2) internalizing the teachings of sedulur sikep, 3) establishing traditional institutions, 4) associative social interactions with outsiders, and 5) technology limitation. When facing the current globalization, the sedulur sikep community is diffusing innovations related to the religious system and the use of advanced technology in various fields of life. Although in the diffusion process, several innovations are accepted, some innovations are limited as a form of self-defence so that the teachings of sedulur sikep remain sustainable.

Abstract

The Gyeongsang dialect is phonologically and morphologically unique, yet current research generally focuses only on its prosody characteristics. Research related to language style and sentence-final ending in the Gyeongsang dialect has received less attention. Therefore, this study focuses on sentence-final ending or jeongyeol eomi in Korean interrogative sentences to fill the research gap. This research is qualitative research with a descriptive analysis method. Data is collected from the Korean drama Reply 1997 from the first three episodes. The result shows that a closed-ended interrogative sentence is the type of interrogative sentence most commonly used in the data, while the most widely used language style is plain style (haerache). The use of question words in an interrogative sentence in the Gyeongsang dialect also determines the variation of sentence-final ending used. The sentence-final ending ended in [o] sound, such as -go, -no, must be used for an open-ended interrogative sentence with question words. Sentence final ending ended in [a] sound, such as -ga, -na, must be used for a close-ended interrogative sentence with no question words.

Abstract

This study examines Ancient Java’s ideal figures based on seven panels of the Arjunawiwaha story from Selomangleng Tulungagung Cave. The discussion focuses on the use of archaeological data, which are reliefs, statues, and the description of ideal figures from Ancient Java Kakawin. The results show that all the figures in the Selomangleng Tulungagung Cave depicted the protagonist figures from Arjunawiwaha without showing the antagonist. The protagonist figures consist of God Indra, Arjuna, Nymphs, Soldiers, and God Shiva disguised as a sage. The protagonist figures displayed the ideal concept of figures related to their role. The relief depicted the stratification of gods and humans, Arjuna as an ideal leader and male, angels as ideal woman, ideal marriage, and changes of Arjuna’s strata from human to superhuman who can reach heaven after defeating Niwatawakaca. A lot of the reliefs of Arjunawiwaha that are carved are a strong indication that Arjuna was an idol in the ancient Javanese era.

Abstract

Balian Bawo dancer is an important figure in the traditional ceremony of the Dayak Deah tribe. A Balian Bawo is believed to be the link between humans and spirits. This dance should only be performed by a man. One representation of Dayak life is presented in the body of the dancer. This study has a qualitative design and examines the representation of masculinity that is manifested in the body of Balian Bawo dancers. Data collection was conducted by compiling photo and video documentation which was then analyzed using the theory of denotation semiotics and Roland Barthes connotations. The results of the analysis show that the representation of masculinity is manifested through the attribution of clothing that features an open chest, a large bracelet that connotes strength and the use of special space that underlies Balian Bawo dancers. The dominance of masculinity is also manifested through female companions who play a role in preparing all the needs of a Balian Bawo.

Abstract

As concern over hate speech grows into a global issue (Haraszti 2012), a recurring question confronting every democratic society is how it should restrict discriminatory speech without infringing upon the universally accepted principle of free speech. Japan’s recent experience in coping with growing hate speech presents a valuable case study. The country had staunchly protected the free speech principle enshrined in the post-World War II constitution and consistently been disinclined to pass any law that regulates hate speech. This, however, has changed dramatically in the last few years. The incidence of hate speech targeting ethnic Koreans exploded around 2012, which in turn set in motion a tidal wave of vibrant anti-racism movements. This article examines the relevance of sociological implications of critical race theory, a legal movement that has featured prominently in the anti-racist practice in the United States, in understanding the recent emergence of anti-hate speech activism in Japan

Abstract

One of the islands in Indonesia which has both tourist and mining interests is Belitung Island. Belitung Island is an island between Kalimantan Island and Bangka Island. The history of Belitung is said to have existed since the time of the Majapahit Kingdom, while in the Islamic Belitung era it had four kingdoms, namely: the Balok Kingdom (the oldest and largest), Belantu Kingdom, Badau Kingdom, and Buding Kingdom. This study aims to reveal the existence of Islam on Belitung Island, and this is because Belitung Island has many Islamic treasures, some of which have not been disclosed. This research uses explorative and expansive methods. Islam entered Belitung around the end of the 16th century. In the 17th century, Islam in Belitung became an institution of political power with the establishment of the four kingdoms. Sources about the arrival of Islam on the island of Belitung have a variety of stories that developed in the community, and each source is supported by the data on the tombstone findings in several places on the island of Belitung. Assumptions about who spread various versions start from Aceh, Minangkabau, Palembang, Islamic Mataram, Majapahit, Cirebon, Banten, Gresik, and Banjar.

Abstract

From 2017 to 2019, a number of street names were changed in Yogyakarta, Bandung and Surabaya City by each Provincial Government for the purpose of celebrating the reconciliation between the Sundanese (West Java) and the Javanese (Central Java, East Java, and Yogyakarta) after years of dispute due to the infamous Bubat Tragedy which occurred in the 14th century. Some existing street names in Yogyakarta and Surabaya were changed to those associated with Sundanese history, such as Jalan Padjadjaran and Jalan Siliwangi, while some existing street names in Bandung were changed to those associated with Javanese history, such as Jalan Majapahit and Jalan Hayam Wuruk. The author explores this phenomenon using the concept of critical toponymies and examines the connections between naming, place-making, and power underlying such policy. This study found that, although the changes were made with good intentions, in some cases this was actually opposed by several factions within the local community because those changes could obliterate the historical significance and collective memory represented by the previous names. From theoretical perspective, this paper also discussed the successful and unsuccessful changes of street names, as well as their relevance to the current context. In other words, our findings can be taken into consideration in future policy-making process.
