Abstract

This article is a literary analysis on Aleksandra Mikhailovna Kollontai' Vasilisa Maligina (1923) by using a feminist approach. Issues on masculinity are the focus of the analysis. The main argument of this article is that through the main character of this story - Vasilisa Maligina - Kollontai tried to expose the new image of Russian women by reconstructing the concept of Russian traditional masculinity in Russian society under former Uni Soviet communist government based on patriarchal culture.

Abstract

Critical discourse analysis (CDA) has become a very influential interdisciplinary approach, which views a discourse as a form of social practice. Antipoligamy discourse, as a social practice persisted for a long time ago in Indonesia, offers chalenging discussions in the perspective of CDA. Teun van Dijk, as one of the pioneers of CDA, articulates ideology as the basis of the social representations of groups. Furthermore, he advocates a sociocognitive interface between social structures and discourse structures. Within these views, whenever social groups, including the producers of antipoligamy texts, voice their ideas and feelings, their ideology come up apparently or, otherwise, lies behind language. This paper is an attempt to explain how women formulate their beliefs into a joint statement: by using what ideological discourse production strategies they share their ideology to public. A Joint Statement issued in December 2006, which contains a broad definition of poligamy in negative sense, in fact represents negative other-representation strategy used by its producer.

Abstract

R.M. Noto Soeroto was one of the Indonesian writers who wrote in Dutch. His poems and essays in Dutch were well appreciated by both the Dutch and the Indonesian society in the Netherlands. He published his works in Oedaya: Majalah bergambar untuk Indonesia, a magazine (1923-1931) that was founded by him. His works can be categorized as Dutch-East Indies literature. Most of his works in Dutch were written when he lived in the Netherlands and describe the Javanese culture. This article is an analysis on three of Soeroto's poems. These three poems present flowers as theme, two poems are from his anthology Melatiknoppen: gedichten in proza (1915) and one poem from De geur van moeders haarwrong (1922). Flowers are most usually seen as a symbol for women, and thus represent the idea of femininity. However, the flowers in these three poems refer to the idea of masculinity. Jasmine is no longer a symbol limited to the feminine gender. In Javanese culture, the jasmine flower attached to the hair is a symbol of femininity. The flower wrapped around the kris is a symbol of masculinity. Furthermore jasmine is a symbol for struggle. This article tries to demonstrate the presence of masculinity through the use of flowers and their role as an image of masculinity in Noto Soeroto's poems.

Abstract

Abstract

This correlational study is to show the role of deductive and inductive reasoning abilities as aspects of cognitive development on expository text comprehension among high school students who already have a capacity to think in conceptual and hyphotetical ways and to examine how they correlate and influence the text comprehension process. This study has broaden our knowledge of language and thinking, as it is different from other previous studies that focused on comprehension process among elementary students, narrative, reading strategies, and comprehension difficulties. It is found that deductive reasoning is more significantly correlated to expository text comprehension than inductive reasoning. There is other significant differences between natural sciences and social sciences students in expository text comprehension and deductive reasoning, where the average scores of the natural sciences students on both variables are higher than those of social sciences students. It shows that the ability to analisesyntesise, to relate some basic elements of a text, and to draw a conclusion or main idea of the text support the process of expository text comprehension, and can be taught and developed by learning process. Meanwhile, inductive reasoning ability is significantly different between male and female students, and it does not correlate to expository text comprehension.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to explain and describe the colonial history of fortresses and their influence on the development of urban planning in Indonesia. The fortresses functioned as centres of colonial administration and control. In former days these fortresses were identified with the domination of power, economic exploitation and as symbols of foreign rule in areas ruled by local kings and entrepeneurs. Due to political and economic changes as well as in town planning, the funtion of these fortresses also changed. At present, the fortresses function as heritage sites and interesting places to be visited by tourists. The current efforts to conserve these historical sites can have an effect on urban development planning. The Indonesian government, especially the Department of Tourism and Culture, should give much attention not only for preservation but also for restauration of these sites.
