Abstract

Abstract

As a powerful medium to persuade people to buy a product or service, ads have long been used in many forms. This study attempts to understand the language use and graphic design of comic as one of the ads forms in Jakarta-based Indonesian media, particularly in the period of 1940-1960s. By employing different approaches in Linguistic Anthropology, Mass Communication and Graphic Design, the findings show a close relationship between the language and the graphic design of the ads with the society who consumed them as well as a trend towards informal language use and popular culture.

Abstract

Phatic particles are rarely discussed, especially in the scope of syntax, even though the notion of phatic communion had been proposed by Malinowski in 1923. In Indonesian language, Harimurti (1986) had pioneered the inclusion of phatic expression into the Indonesian parts of speech. In Mandarin language, there has not been any special interest to discuss it. Generally phatic particles overlap with interjections and interrogatives. However, this article discusses about some evidences about the differences among them.

Abstract

Abstract

Tradition can be seen from two different perspectives, those of literacy (writing system) and of oral tradition. Recently, some intellectuals have shown interest in oral tradition as academic study in some universities. Oral tradition is not supposed to be seen merely as part of the past and a cultural entity of no importance. This paper describes the two traditions of oral literature and manuscript writing as a basis for local historical knowledge and records of cultural politics. The discussion will be more about the content of tradition that is related to the history of cultural politics than a historical observation.

Abstract

In the daily life of the Indonesian people, a penghulu plays a role in accordance with the way the word is understood by the community in which he lives. In West Sumatra, a penghulu is the head of the nagari. In Riau, he has a status equal to that of a head of a village. In Java, he has an authority in all administrative matters of religion. This paper discusses the meaning of penghulu as depicted in old manuscripts written by the natives. Based on a research on these native manuscripts, it can be concluded that a penghulu plays the roles of both a bureaucrat and a Muslim leader.

Abstract

Manuscripts are not supposed to be something unknown to the public and possessed by limited circle of people. Manuscripts are cultural heritage of a nation the content of which reflects the ideas, knowledge, tradition, and the patterns of behavior of the past society. As such they can be of use to different segments of society. This paper discusses the benefits of manuscripts to the efforts of reconstructing Islamic intellectual history in Indonesia by studying the case of local manuscripts in the Minang region. These manuscripts are not only the products of a writing tradition that had developed strongly in the Minangkabau society, but also a reflection of the living tradition of the society.

Abstract

Cave pictures are one form of human culture found in old sites of dwelling caves of the pre-historical time. Cave pictures can be said to be universal in nature because they are found almost every where in the world, including Indonesia. One form or object of picture frequently found is hand stencils. In Indonesia, beside Kalimantan, the Moluccas, and Irian, it is also found in South Sulawesi, especially in the District of Pangkajene Islands (Pangkep). Twelve caves in Pangkep are studied where 326 hand stencils are found. The hand part, orientation, hand side, number of fingers, size, color, and context are analyzed. The analysis reveals a pattern of hand palms of adults with upward orientation. The analysis also reveals a pattern of hand palms that are brown in color, randomly arranged, within the context of pictures of other hands.

Abstract

Trading activities in the Nusantara archipelago had developed into an international trade. According to Ricklef, Europe was not the most developed region in the world. The developing world at the time was in fact the Islamic world, stretching from the Middle East to the Nusantara. If we trace it further back into the past, to the pre-Islamic age, trade in the Nusantara region had developed, espcially during the golden eras of Sriwijaya and Majapahit. This paper describes the economic and trade development in the Nusantara before the 19th century.
