Abstract

Leather is one of the semi-finished products that contribute to the export of non-oil commodities. In general, leather processing wastewater containing germs, dirty-colored, foul- smelling and containing COD, BOD5 and suspended solids are high. One of the adsorbent which has a large adsorption capacity is the natural zeolite. Natural zeolite adsorption capability increases when first activated zeolite. Zeolites can reduce pollutants in the form of cations and anions in wastewater so it can reduce COD and BOD5 waste leather processing. The purpose of this study to determine the effect of HCl concentration of activating zeolites and zeolite-activated heavy influence for BOD5 and COD reduction. The method used is laboratory-scale experiments. Activation 150 grams zeolite - 40 + 60 mesh by heating 2500C and the addition of 0.1 N HCl acid, 0.15 N, 0.2 N and 0.25 N. Zeolites are separated and dried in an oven. Weight activated zeolite 5 grams, 10 grams, 15 grams and 20grams. Mixing zeolite and 100 cc leather processing waste electrical stirrer 150 rpm for 30 minutes and then separated sediment. The filtrate was tested in COD and BOD5 waste leather processing. Do also test COD and BOD 5 without zeolite. COD tests using a COD reactor and BOD5 tests using Winkler method. The results showed that the zeolites were activated by heating 2500 C, 0.15 N HCl and weight of 20 grams of activated zeolite an optimum condition to reduce COD and BOD5 BOD5 decreased 96.67% to the value of 105 mg / l and COD reduction reached 92.23% with a value of 335.36 mg /l. Zeolite results of this study can be used for leather industry because zeolites are widely available in Indonesia and can to reduce levels BOD5 and COD leather processing waste.

Abstract

Cooking oil is one of the basic ingredients needed by the Indonesian community, especially the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the field of food. Cooking oil is usually used as a medium for frying food and flavor enhancer. A large number of cooking oil used by SMEs cause high amount of waste which prompts to various diseases. Therefore, this research attempts to use the waste cooking oil in order to prevent from environmental pollution by re- process it as raw material for making solid soap. This study was conducted from June 13, 2012 to July 20, 2012 at SME Panji Jaya, Segoroyoso, Pleret, Bantul, Yogyakarta and the material was tested in the Chemical Laboratory of Leather Technology Academy, Yogyakarta. The samples are waste cooking oil after used for frying krecek (buffalo skin cracker) for 2-3 times. Utilization of waste cooking oil was done with the purification process consisting of three phases; the removal of seasoning (despicing) in which then the waste cooking oil was filtered with filter paper, and then neutralized with 15% NaOH and bleached using activated carbon as much as 10% of the waste cooking oil used. The purified waste cooking oil was used as raw material for making solid soaps. Cooking oil that has been purified again decreased its FFA levels so that its quality improved. The test result of solid soap compared with SNI 06-3532-1994 shows that it has moisture content of 17.9%, the amount of free fatty acids 61.16%, alkali-free 0.52%, free fatty acids 0.74, lathering number 200, negative mineral oil 80, and pH = 6.

Abstract

The stunted of shoe production in CV Barokah is identified in the shoe pattern section. The company has to make shoe pattern repeatedly because pattern materials are not durable. Uncompleted pattern codification also creates problems in shoe production. This research aims to give solutions for shoe pattern problems in the company with material improvement and pattern codification. The material observed is the process of making shoes, especially focusing on material and pattern codification. Data collection methods are observation and documentation. This research uses experiment method in order to solve the problem. The results of problem solving can be concluded that patterns made of cardboard, manila paper, cardboard, and texon are more easily damaged when compared to patterns made from mica. In addition, the complete codification must include the name of pattern, size, in/out sign, center sign, balance sign, elasticity, accessory sign, lodging sign, and amount of pattern. Completing shoe pattern codification also makes shoe production become more efficient.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study of the use of Al2(SO4)3 as fixation agent in taning sheep skin using tanin derived from gambier plants (uncaria gambir). A total 18 pieces of sheep skin were used using Al2(SO4)3 which was varied, ie; 0%, ½%, 1%, 1,5% and 2%, as a control 0,5% H2C2O4 is used. The physical characteristics of the liquid and the leather product were then tested and the test results were compared with the standard lining skin (SNI 06-0237-1989). Addition of 0,5% Al2(SO4)3 reduced the final pH of the fixation liquid from 5.43 to 3.99. The increase in skin thickness at the addition of 0.5% Al2(SO4)3 was 4.14% and in the control test was 5.29%. Skin shrinkage temperature increased from 60,50 0C to 73,17 0C at the addition of 1% Al2(SO4)3. Tensile strength and elongation tended to decrease with the increase in the amount of Al2(SO4)3, but all the results of tensile strength met with SNI because it is above 75 kg/cm2. Tear strength and oil contains of skin tended to decrease with the increase in the addition of Al2(SO4)3. The degree of tanning and tannin content of the skin tended to rise, at the addition of 0.5% Al2(SO4)3 the skin had a degree of tanning 55.23% and a tannin content of 24.66%. SEM test results showed the surface morphology of the skin became even and denser.
