Abstract

Fatliquoring is one of important processes in leather tanning. Its main process function is to keep the quality of leather, especially on organoleptical test. The aim of this research is to study the blend of palm oil and soybean oil (1:1 ratio) as fatliquor raw materials. Palm oil was chosen because Indonesia has abundant material and also is one of main players in palm plantation and production. At the beginning, the raw material is analyzed to determine the quality, i.e. acid number, saponification number, iod number and fatty acid contains. Then the raw material is processed to be fatliquoring agent with sulfitation process. The fatliquoring agent was then analyzed to determine its quality and applied in fatliquoring leather. Finally, the leather mechanical characteristics were tested, i.e. tensile, elongation and stitch strengths. The result gives information that the application of fatliquor makes the leather have better test parameter. The value of tensile, elongation and stitch strengths for leather without fatliquor 160 kg/cm2, 63% and 82 kg/cm; and for leather with fatliquor 250 kg/cm2, 142% and 163 kg/cm. Therefore, fatliquoring agent made from palm oil and soybean oil blend can be used as alternative material in fatliquoring process.

Abstract

Sewing machines used industrial society uses electricity as an energy source. Electric power received by the electric motor is converted into kinetic energy. Rotation of the electric motor will be forwarded to move the sewing machine through a series of power transmission, among others, with pulleys and belts. For students who are just learning to sew, the sewing speed problem becomes one of the factors that determine the outcome of stitches. Students who are not familiar with this high speed will find it difficult to produce a good stitch. This study wanted to know the results of setting the electric sewing machine motor with resistance measurement, voltage and current flowing in the electric motor sewing machine, as well as the motor rpm. The study was conducted on a flat bed sewing machine with a high speed electric motor. Speed setting is done with the circuit TRIAC and DIAC, the triac and diac components into one. The results showed setting a string of AC voltage using a triac and diac pairs can be used as a universal regulator of motor rotation speed on the flat bed sewing machine. The magnitude of the percentage increased in the speed of the voltage of 100 volts to 215 volts with an increase in speed by 53.07%. The greater the voltage is increased, the amount of flow is also greater, and conversely the smaller the voltage applied, the less the current flows, so the inrush current can be avoided.

Abstract

“Seribu Nama” or ‘thousand name’ fish is another name for arwana. There are four kinds of a thousand name fish (arwana), which are: super red, golden, silver, and silver red. Super red is the most expensive one, besides, Seribu Nama Fish (arwana) has a mystery which is called a good luck or magic power, good fortune, reducing the devil, and giving the signal of the lucky. That is why it is chosen as an idea in the leather craft because of the value in the seribu nama fish (arwana), especially in its shape, the movement of its parts of the body: fin, the head of the fin, and its tail which completes it. The process in the manufacturing of the craft includes three stages; the first is the exploration including the exploration of the source of idea and data gathering, the second is planning, it is the sketch making until the best design selecting, the third is the step by step making until the work is done. The manufacturing is started by the preparing material and equipment, the pattern making, the making of work frame, the cutting of solid heart sponge, the gluing and assembling, the shaping of the leather skin, the glass setting, the cartoon setting and laken cloth, the hole making, and the plaiting. The research processes started from the idea of a seribu nama fish (arwana), and through the process of manufacturing that is done, finally it is made the leather craft in two dimensions. The shape of the craft emphasizes more to the craftsmanship and expression, and has the meaning or message that is intended to be conveyed by the writer.

Abstract

Shoes are generally made of chrome tanned cow hide. The leather tannery industry has not utilized buffalo leather as raw material for the tanning of shoes leather, especially upper shoes military. This research is a preliminary study to determine whether buffalo skin can be used as an alternative raw material for making military boots that meet the standards of military upper shoes which are made of cow leather. Stages of the process and tanning method are generally equal to the tanning process that uses upper cow hide shoes (Beam House, Tanning, Post Tanning, and Finishing). Buffalo skin as much as 3 pieces, which is being processed before, are split into 6 sides and then processed together in a drum by using mineral tanning materials that are chromosal B; retanning vegetable material, resin acrylic, oil fatliquoring anionic and anionic dyes. After the tanning process is completed, the physical and organoleptic testing that include tanning test, paint lid scrub resistance (dry and wet), tensile strength, elongation, water absorption, strength flexibility, zwik durability, and reliability spark are tested with the test method in accordance to ISO 0234.22009. From the test results, the criteria subsequently matched with Standards/Technical Specification of Field Black Shoes with Lemon Pattern Number: 20-2-16024 April 2006. Therefore, it can be concluded that buffalo leather has the same physical properties and organoleptic with cow hide after processing (tanned) by the method of upper shoe tanning so that it can be use das an alternative raw material.
