Abstract

Purpose– Examining the relationship between regional integration under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and inclusive growth in West Africa. Situating the analysis of ECOWAS integration within the broader conceptual framework of the New International Economic Order (NIEO) to assess the potential of regional integration to reduce global and regional inequalities. Design/methodology/approach– Annual panel data for the 15 ECOWAS member countries covering the 2000–2024 period, sourced from the World Bank (WDI), AfDB, and ECOWAS statistics. Fixed Effects (FE) and Random Effects (RE) models were employed, with the selection based on the Hausman test. The system Generalized Method of Moments (System GMM) was used to address dynamic dependence, endogeneity, and simultaneity bias. Originality- This article links ECOWAS integration to the New International Economic Order (NIEO) framework to examine equitable growth, utilizing recent panel data (2000–2024) and the System GMM method to address endogeneity issues. Findings and Discussion– ECOWAS integration has proven to have a positive and significant impact on inclusive growth, though the effect is relatively modest. Infrastructure and education serve as key drivers, whereas inflation hinders growth. Integration cannot stand alone; it requires the support of infrastructure improvements and domestic policies. Conclusion– Regional integration contributes to the development of West Africa, but its effectiveness depends heavily on the quality of institutions, macroeconomic stability, the addressing of inequality, and investment in infrastructure and MSMEs. Keywords- ECOWAS; Inclusive growth; New International Economic Order; Regional integration; West Africa

Abstract

Purpose – Analyzing the impact of fiscal sustainability indicators (debt to GDP ratio, tax to GDP ratio, debt service to revenue ratio, and fiscal balance) on Nigeria's economic growth. Design/methodology/approach – It employs a quasi-experimental quantitative approach using time-series data from the Central Bank of Nigeria covering the period 1990–2024. The analysis utilizes the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) unit root test, the Johansen cointegration test, and the Error Correction Model (ECM). Originality – The analysis focuses on the use of fiscal sustainability indicator ratios rather than merely absolute debt or expenditure values and incorporates the latest data on fiscal dynamics up to 2024. Findings and Discussion – Debt to GDP Ratio: Significant negative impact ($\beta = -2.11$; $p = 0.0450$); excessive debt triggers a debt overhang. Tax to GDP Ratio: Positive but insignificant impact ($\beta = 2.48$; $p = 0.3816$); tax revenue remains suboptimal. Debt Service-to-Revenue Ratio: Significant negative impact and the most dominant factor ($\beta = -8.07$; $p = 0.0037$); debt repayment burdens drain funds from productive sectors. Fiscal Balance: Significant negative impact ($\beta = -1.87$; $p = 0.0328$); prolonged deficits slow down growth. Speed of Adjustment (ECM): -0.293 ($p = 0.0000$); 29.3% of the disequilibrium is corrected annually. Conclusion – Fiscal sustainability is crucial for Nigeria's economy. Economic growth is hampered by excessive debt, recurring deficits, and, above all, the burden of debt service payments. The government is advised to implement prudent borrowing strategies, ensure budget efficiency, and strengthen domestic tax collection. Keywords – Debt service to revenue ratio, fiscal sustainability, fiscal balance, public debt to GDP ratio, tax to GDP ratio.

Abstract

Purpose – Analyzing the impact of direct healthcare costs, indirect burdens, and coping strategies associated with childhood malnutrition on household economic well-being in South-South Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach – A quantitative survey-based study was conducted involving 363 households with children under five across six states in the South-South region of Nigeria. The data were analyzed using multiple regression. Originality – It presents recent (2025) micro-level empirical evidence that integrates medical expenditures, productivity losses, and household recovery responses within a single framework in the South-South region of Nigeria. Findings and Discussion – Direct Healthcare Costs ($X_1$): Had a significant negative effect ($\beta = -0.054$; $p = 0.044$). Out-of-pocket medical payments substantially depleted savings and worsened the family's economic situation. Indirect Costs ($X_2$): Had a positive but non-significant effect ($\beta = 0.080$; $p = 0.054$). The loss of caregivers' working days was offset by informal support or side jobs. Coping Strategies ($X_3$): Had a positive but non-significant effect ($\beta = 0.079$; $p = 0.507$). Debt and reduced food intake provided only temporary liquidity relief rather than long-term economic resilience. Conclusion – Malnutrition among toddlers places a significant strain on household finances due to high direct medical costs. Coping mechanisms such as informal loans fail to provide long-term recovery solutions; therefore, the government needs to implement community-based health insurance and microcredit schemes. Abstract

Purpose - Examining how the interaction between Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities and organizational leadership dynamics can strengthen business strategic decision-making processes. Design/methodology/approach – A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology following the PRISMA protocol was employed. Data were screened from the Scopus database up to July 2026, resulting in a final cohort of 30 English-language scholarly journal articles for qualitative analysis. Originality - Introducing the concept of "Algorithmic Bounded Rationality" to explain AI limitations (such as data bias, contextual rigidity, and factual inaccuracies) and developing a "Triple Helix" model that emphasizes the importance of synergy between machine precision and human cognitive curation (human-in-the-loop governance). Findings and Discussion – The effectiveness of AI is not technologically deterministic; AI capabilities—ranging from predictive analytics to generative models—require organizational mediators such as ethical leadership, a digital mindset, and strategic ambidexterity. AI acts as a cognitive prosthesis that frees up a leader's capacity from routine operational tasks, yet it still requires the contextual intuition and ethical governance of human leaders. Most literature focuses on quantitative or conceptual approaches, while in-depth, case-study-based qualitative research remains very limited. Conclusion – AI does not replace the role of executive leaders; instead, it serves as a cognitive aid. Organizations that successfully integrate AI's computational precision with ethical and responsive human leadership achieve the greatest competitive advantage. Keywords – Artificial Intelligence, Leadership Decision Making, Dynamic Managerial Capabilities, Algorithmic Bounded Rationality, Human AI Complementarity
