Abstract

Abstract

Introduction : Non-dental glass fiber can used as alternative dental glass fiber. Flexural strength to withstand masticatory loads that influenced by various factors, including the orientation and type of fiber used. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to see the effect of orientation and type of non-dental glass fiber on flexural strength. Method : The research method used FRC samples measuring 65 x 10 x 2,5 mm which were reinforced with non-dental glass fiber mats, roving, woven roving, and dental glass fiber roving. Non-dental glass fiber mats and woven roving was cut according to the length and width of the sample, while the non-dental glass fiber roving was weighed according to the weigh tof 4 sheets of dental glass fiber roving to meet the sample mold zone. Result : Glass fiber placed in the tension position in the sample mold. The flexural strength was tested using universal testing machine. This study indicate that the type of glass fiber doesn’t have a significant effect on the flexural strength of FRC with reinforced non dental glass fiber and dental glass fiber. Conclusion : The orientation of non-dental glass fiber roving as reinforcement of FRC has greater flexural strength than non-dental glass fiber with mats and woven roving orientation.

Abstract

Background: Dental fibers were first introduced by Smith (1960) which are used in various fields of dentistry. Dental fibers are classified into two categories, natural and synthetic. Glass fiber that is often used in dentistry is E-glass fiber because of its resistance to chemical reactions, has good aesthetic properties, has almost the same mechanical properties as dentin and is biocompatible. In the oral cavity, acidic conditions occur due to consumption of food and beverages containing acid. Acidic conditions in the oral cavity can affect the mechanical properties of the composite resin. Factors that affect the mechanical properties of fiber reinforced composite are the properties of the composite material and fiber used, fiber quantity, fiber position, fiber direction, fiber adhesion to the composite matrix. To determine and study the effect of acidic pH on the mechanical strength of e-glass fibers. Method: This type of research is a literature review using a systematic review approach.Result: The decrease in compressive strength and resistance was influenced by structural disturbances and loss of most components due to acid exposure. The decrease in the tensile strength of the glass fiber increases the time associated with immersion of the fiber surface which can interfere with the continuity of the e-glass network. Acidic drinks, carbonated drinks, and alcohol can produce erosion on the surface of the composite resin. The longer the immersion, the more solution particles that enter the resin microporosity space and reduce the strength of the composite resin. Conclusion: The mechanical strength of e-glass fiber will decrease with the length of exposure to acid. Types of acids that can affect the decline in mechanical strength are strong acids such as hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), nitric acid (HNO3), and phosphoric acid (H3PO4).

Abstract

Background: Fixed orthodontic is one of the orthodontic treatments that cannot be removed by the patient because they are attached directly to the teeth using an adhesive material. The complex shape of fixed orthodontic components makes it difficult to clean so that bacteria will multiply and form plaque. In addition to brushing teeth, Plaque control in fixed orthodontic users needs to be supplemented with mouthwash. Gargling  0.1% chlorhexidine solution and xylitol solution is one of the many ways to achieve good plaque control. Research purpose: To determine the difference in the effect of gargling with 0.1% chlorhexidine solution and xylitol solution on plaque growth in fixed orthodontic users. Method: The type of this study is clinical experimental research with one group pretest posttest design approach. The number of participants are 30 people, treated with gargling 0.1% chlorhexidine solution and xylitol solution. The plaque index was examined before and after gargling with 0.1% chlorhexidine solution and xylitol solution for fixed orthodontic patient.Result: there was a significant decrease in plaque index before and after gargling with 0.1% chlorhexidine solution and xylitol solution. Independent-t test (p<0.05) showed that there was no significant difference between the difference in plaque index reduction in the group that gargled with 0.1% chlorhexidine solution and the group that gargled with xylitol solution. Conclusion: Gargling with 0.1% chlorhexidine solution is more effective in reducing plaque index than gargling with xylitol solution although there was no significant difference.
