Abstract

Benign Fibrous Histiocytoma (BFH) is a benign soft tissue tumor consisting of fibroblastic and histiocytic cells. The most often affected locations by BFH lesions are the buccal mucosa, mandibular bones, gingiva, lower and upper lips, soft palate, and floor of the mouth. The etiology of BFH is unknown, but the etiology is thought to be reactive changes from previous infections such as insect bites or thorn pricks. Signs and symptoms of BFH include round-shaped swelling, appearing reddish at first, and turning brown. Case: A 40 year old male patient came to the Sultan Fatah Regional Hospital Demak with complaints of swelling of the left cheek below the eye, dizziness and fever for the last 7 days. Patients eat and drink with bread mixed in water or tea. The patient came in a compos mentis state, but the patient was less cooperative. Case management: The patient underwent incision and drainage. Tissue was taken for biopsy examination measuring 1 x 0.4 x 0.3 cm. The patient follow-up was carried out 7 days after the procedure. Results: Follow-up at 7 days after the procedure showed the patient's mouth opening was 1 cm. Conclusion: In this case, from subjective, objective, and supporting examinations, cause of infection has not been found. The treatment carried out is incision and drainage of the infection.

Abstract

Background: Infection is one of the most common dental and oral health problems experienced by the community. Most infections in the oral cavity are caused by Candida albicans and bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans. Currently, there is a tendency to use natural ingredients that are believed to be antifungal and antibacterial as a substitute for chemicals. One of the natural ingredients that have the potential as antifungal and antibacterial that is easily obtained by the community is basil leaves (Ocimum spp.). Objective: This study aims to determine the efficacy of basil leaf extract (Ocimum spp.) on the growth of C. albicans and S. mutans in vitro. Methods: A systematic literature review study using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method was conducted to find scientific evidence of the efficacy of basil leaves (Ocimum spp). Result: Extracts from the majority of basil leaf species (Ocimum spp.) contain flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, steroids, triterpenoids, which are expected to have activity as antifungal and antibacterial agents. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of basil leaf extract from various species, solvents and extraction methods varied with a range of 0.0025 – 25% w/v. Conclusion: The most effective basil leaf species in inhibiting the growth of C. albicans was Ocimum basilicum which was extracted using maceration method with methanol solvent (MIC 0.01%). Meanwhile, the most effective basil leaf species in inhibiting the growth of S. mutans was Ocimum sanctum L. which was extracted using the soxhletation method with 96% ethanol solvent (MIC 0.0025%).

Abstract

Background : Composite resin is a commonly used material in dentistry due to its ease of application and aesthetic qualities. A specific type of this material, known as fiber reinforced composite, consists of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibers. This study aims to compare the impact of various concentrations of non-dental glass fibers on the flexural strength of composite resin when immersed in artificial saliva.Methodology : This study was experimental and followed a post-test only control group design. It included 18 specimens, each measuring 25x2x2 mm. The specimens were divided into three groups: the first group consisted of non-dental glass fiber reinforced composite with concentrations of 0%, 1%, and 2%. The data were analyzed using a One Way ANOVA parametric test. Results : The average flexural strength for the first group of non-dental glass fiber reinforced composite at 0% concentration was 52.496 MPa. For the second group, with a 1% concentration, it was 96.268 MPa. The third group, with a 2% concentration, had an average flexural strength of 134.791 MPa. The One Way ANOVA results yielded a p-value of 0.000Conclusion : The research results indicated that the highest flexural strength was observed in the non-dental glass fiber reinforced composite with a 2% concentration

Abstract

Background: One malocclusion condition is accompanied by crowding due to a discrepancy between arch and tooth size. Piggyback technique in orthodontics to correct malpositioned teeth without disturbing the stability of the main arch. The aim of this case report is to guide clinicians in using the piggyback technique as a technique that can be used in treating cases of class I malocclusion accompanied by severe crowding without disturbing the stability of the main arch. A 22 year old female patient with the main complaint of severe crowding of the anterior teeth. The analysis and diagnosis results showed Angle class I malocclusion accompanied by maxillary anterior crowding, rotation of teeth 11, 12, 13, palatal ectopic of tooth 25, buccal ectopic of tooth 33, and anterior-posterior mandibular crowding. There was a median line shift of 2 mm to the left, skeletal relationship class 1. Panoramic showed the presence of supernumerary teeth between 11 and 21, superficial caries on tooth 11, and caries reaching the pulp on tooth 26. All permanent teeth had erupted, and impaction on tooth 48. The piggyback technique used is by modifying two wires plus the use of an open NiTi coil spring, where some of the 0.012 NiTi flexible wire segments on the jaw arch are joined with SS 0.017 x 0.025 stiff wire throughout the segments. Treatment results showed corrected maxillary and mandibular crowding, rotation of teeth 11, 12, 13, palatal ectopic of tooth 25, buccal ectopic of tooth 33, overjet, corrected deep bite, and corrected mandibular median line shift. The profile improves, the patient's smile becomes more attractive with the teeth at good level and alignment and the facial profile becomes straighter.
