Abstract

Background. Stroke is a non-communicable disease, and the number of cases continues to increase every year. Proper treatment after a stroke determines the patient's maximum recovery rate. Until now, the incidence of stroke continues to increase, which is due to the lack of information among post-stroke patients about stroke care at home. Most of them only get information regarding stroke nutritional diets, even though they also have to be trained physically, one of which is ROM (Range of Motion).  This Community Service activity aims to improve the knowledge and behavior of elderly cadres at the Bandung community health center. Implementation Method. Community service methods are pre-test and post-tests, with activities ranging from counseling about stroke and how to prevent stroke, outreach, ROM training for rehabilitation of post-stroke patients, assistance with ROM training, and evaluation of elderly posyandu cadres. The number of respondents targeted for this community service was 50 health cadres and the elderly in Suruhan Kidul village, Bandung Community Health Center working area, Tulungagung District. Findings. The result of community service based on observation and evaluation is an increase in the knowledge and skills of health cadres and the elderly regarding rehabilitative actions for stroke patients (ROM). Conclusion. Community service in the form of counseling and training carried out in Suruhan Kidul Village, Bandung Community Health Center working area, Bandung District, Tulungagung Regency, generally provides benefits to health cadres and the elderly. Cadres and the elderly have the knowledge and skills for stroke rehabilitation (ROM).

Abstract

Background. Low Birth Weight Infants (LBWIs) often experience oral feeding difficulties due to organ immaturity, which can hinder their overall care and increase mortality risk. One intervention to address weak suction reflexes is early oral stimulation, involving gentle massage around the mouth to activate muscle tissue. This study aimed to examine the effect of oral stimulation on the suction reflexes of LBWIs. Research Method. A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was used. The study involved 28 LBWIs selected through purposive sampling from a population of 30 infants. The independent variable was oral stimulation, and the dependent variable was the infants’ suction reflexes. Oral stimulation was administered once daily for 15 minutes over seven consecutive days. Data were collected using a standard oral stimulation procedure and observation sheets to assess suction reflexes. Findings. Before the intervention, 15 infants (54%) showed poor suction reflexes. After the seven-day stimulation, 18 infants (64%) demonstrated improved suction reflexes. Statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed a significant effect (p = 0.000), indicating that oral stimulation positively influenced the development of suction reflexes in LBWIs. Conclusion. oral stimulation is effective in enhancing suction reflexes among LBWIs. Nurses are encouraged to implement this simple, non-invasive intervention to promote faster recovery, shorten treatment duration, and reduce healthcare costs.

Abstract

Background. When the kidneys are unable to eliminate waste and fluid from the body, hemodialysis is a treatment that is employed. Hemodialysis patients with kidney failure experience a reduction in cerebral perfusion and blood flow velocity, which leads to a cerebral edema, a decrease in intracerebral blood pressure, and a change in the brain's oxygen metabolism, all of which impair cognitive function. Numerous investigations on people with chronic renal disease have extensively documented cognitive impairments and dementia. This study purpose to determine cognitive function related to the duration of hemodialysis in chronic kidney disease patients. Research Methods. This cross-sectional, correlative analytical investigation was carried out in January 2024 using a sample of around 26 participants who satisfied the inclusion requirements using complete sampling methodologies. Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) questionnaires were used in this investigation. The Spearman's rho statistical test was used to assess the collected data. Findings. There was no relationship between the two factors examined in patients with chronic renal disease, the length of hemodialysis treatment, and the cognitive function (p = 0.311). Conclusion. Hospital would be able to maintain or reduce cognitive impairment in hemodialysis patients by offering education or conversation using a variety of techniques or media, particularly with relation to understanding about chronic kidney disease patients.

Abstract

Background. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by chronic pain, stiffness, and decreased joint function, which significantly impairs the quality of life in older adults. As OA progresses, it limits mobility and daily functioning, leading to psychological distress and reduced independence. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Home-Based Exercise Training (HBET) in improving the quality of life among elderly patients with osteoarthritis. Research Methods. A quasi-experimental study with a one-group pretest and posttest design was conducted at the Surabaya Square Public Health Center. Sum of 26 elderly patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis were selected through consecutive sampling, meeting specific inclusion criteria. Participants performed HBET knee exercises at home for 2 weeks under guidance. The Osteoarthritis of Knee and Hip Quality of Life (OAKHQOL) questionnaire was used to assess the quality of life before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the paired t-test with a significance level set at p <0.05. Findings. Statistical analysis revealed a significant improvement in life quality after the intervention, p-value 0.0001. Participants experienced notable enhancements in physical functioning, pain reduction, emotional well-being, and social engagement after performing regular HBET knee exercises. Conclusions. Home-Based Exercise Training (HBET) effectively enhances life quality for older patients knee osteoarthritis. It is a practical, low-cost, and sustainable intervention that can be implemented in community health programs. Further research is recommended to explore HBET's benefits in other aging-related conditions.

Abstract

Background. Primary dysmenorrhea, characterized by cramping pain during menstruation, significantly affects adolescents' quality of life. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of progressive relaxation exercise and aromatherapy on pain intensity in female adolescents with primary dysmenorrhea. ResearchMethod. A total of 64 participants were divided into four groups: progressive relaxation, aromatherapy, combination therapy, and control. The research method used is a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. This study employs the Paired T-Test on the third treatment group, and the NGain-Score test is used to determine which independent variable is more closely related to the dependent variable. Findings. Statistical analysis showed significant reductions in pain intensity in all experimental groups (p = 0.000), with the combination therapy demonstrating the highest effectiveness (NGain-Score: 0.7571). Aromatherapy, particularly with lavender, and progressive relaxation exercises effectively reduced physical discomfort and psychological stress associated with dysmenorrhea. The findings suggest that non-pharmacological interventions, especially when combined, are effective in managing dysmenorrhea. Conclusion. Integrating progressive relaxation exercise and aromatherapy is a promising approach for alleviating primary dysmenorrhea pain in adolescents, offering a safe and natural alternative to conventional pain management.
