Abstract

This study investigates the types of meaning found in Bruno Mars' Talking to the Moon using Geoffrey Leech's theory of meaning. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with the song lyrics serving as the primary data source. Data were collected through documentation techniques and analyzed using the interactive model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which includes data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that four types of meaning were identified in the lyrics, namely conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, affective meaning, and social meaning. Among these categories, connotative meaning appeared most frequently. This suggests that the songwriter tends to express emotional experiences through symbolic and figurative language rather than direct statements. The use of expressions related to longing, hope, and emotional distance allows listeners to interpret the song in ways that connect with their own experiences. The study also highlights that song lyrics can serve as valuable linguistic resources for understanding how language conveys feelings and personal realities. Despite being limited to a single song, this research contributes to semantic studies by demonstrating the relevance of Leech's theory in analyzing contemporary popular music. Keywords: semantics, types of meaning, Geoffrey Leech, song lyrics, Talking to the Moon (Bruno Mars).

Abstract

The morphological and morphosyntactic translation strategies of Surah Al-Baqarah Verse 45 and its contextual meaning are analyzed in this study based on Peter Newmark’s theory, focusing specifically on literal and communicative strategies. The data are sourced from the Quranic text and the digital translation of NU Online. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with a content analysis technique, the research identifies linguistic units across morphological aspects (wasta'īnū), syntactic aspects (the prepositional letter ب in biṣ-ṣabr; the istitsnā' structure in illā 'alā al-khāshi'īn), and semantic-rhetorical aspects (the emphatic particles innā and the emphatic lām in lakabīrah), subsequently classifying them into Newmark’s categories of translation methods and procedures. The findings indicate that the translator selectively combines literal and communicative methods through procedures such as modulation, explicitation, and amplification on elements experiencing meaning shifts due to Arabic morphosyntactic structures. These findings confirm that the morphosyntactic complexity and rhetorical functions of the Arabic language determine the selection of translation strategies for Quranic verses. This research contributes by offering an analytical model for translation strategies at the morphological and syntactic levels that can be applied to other verses with similar linguistic structures. Regarding contextual meaning, Surah Al-Baqarah verse 45 offers a comprehensive psychological-spiritual formula for humans to overcome life's pressures through the synergy between patience as internal self-regulation and prayer as an anchor of spiritual communication. Abstract

Students' poetry-writing skills remain relatively low due to limited vocabulary, difficulty in developing ideas, and learning processes that are still dominated by conventional methods. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Round Table model assisted by word card media in improving the poetry-writing skills of tenth-grade students at SMAN 1 Cibitung. This research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method and a non-equivalent control group design, involving an experimental class and a control class. The research sample consisted of 37 students from class X.K as the experimental class and 38 students from class X.L as the control class. Data collection was conducted through interviews and tests in the form of a pretest and posttest, which were then analyzed using validity tests, reliability tests, normality tests, homogeneity tests, independent sample t-tests, and N-Gain tests. The results showed that the mean score of the experimental class increased from 57 on the pretest to 77 on the posttest, whereas the control class increased from 53 to 61. The independent sample t-test results yielded a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of < 0.001, while the N-Gain test results indicated that the experimental class achieved a score of 51.35% compared to 19.11% for the control class. These results demonstrate that the Round Table model assisted by word card media is effective in improving the poetry-writing skills of tenth-grade students at SMAN 1 Cibitung. This study contributes alternative learning models and media that teachers can utilize to help improve poetry-writing skills, particularly in enhancing students' diction and creativity.   Keywords: Word cards, Poetry-writing skills, Round Table

Abstract

This study aims to describe the types of word-formation errors made by non-native speakers on the Rakidarei account and to recommend digital flashcards as a learning tool for Level 2 Indonesian for Non-Native Speakers (BIPA). This study employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. The research data consist of Indonesian words and phrases extracted from videos uploaded by the Rakidarei account on YouTube. Data collection techniques included observation, transcription, documentation, and note-taking. The data were analyzed through the stages of identification, classification, and interpretation of errors based on the categories of affixation, reduplication, and compounding. The results showed that affixation errors were the most prevalent type, followed by reduplication and compounding errors.  These errors were influenced by a lack of understanding of the morphological rules of the Indonesian language as well as interference from the speakers’ first language. The results of the study showed that 36 word-formation errors were identified, consisting of 28 affixation errors (77.78%), 6 reduplication errors (16.67%), and 2 compounding errors (5.56%). Affixation errors were the most prevalent type of error. Based on the research findings, the results of this analysis can be used as a basis for developing recommendations for digital flashcard materials for Level 2 BIPA instruction.  Keywords: error analysis, affixation, compounding, reduplication, BIPA.

Abstract

Arabic language learning, which encompasses the four core skills listening, speaking, reading, and writing, requires interactive and innovative learning media. However, in practice, the learning process is still dominated by conventional methods with limited use of media, resulting in low interest and poor Arabic language skills among female students. This study aims to develop, assess the feasibility of, and test the effectiveness of an interactive animated learning medium based on the Android Smart Arabic Holistic Learning App (SAHLA) developed using iSpring Suite 11 to enhance the interest and Arabic language skills of female students in the 10th grade at the K.H. Abd. Wahab Hasbulloh Bahrul Ulum Tambakberas Jombang Elite Islamic High School. This study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research instruments included a needs analysis questionnaire, an expert validation sheet, a student response questionnaire, and learning outcome tests in the form of pre-tests and post-tests. The research results show that the media needs level reached 85.4% (very high category), content expert validation was 80% (acceptable category), media expert validation was 94% (very acceptable category), and student response was 87.7% (very good category). The results of the paired-sample t-test showed that the calculated t-value of 39.2 was greater than the critical t-value of 2.032 at a significance level of 0.05. In addition, there was an increase in the mean score from 30.63 (pre-test) to 81.15 (post-test), with an average difference of 38.57. Thus, the SAHLA learning medium is deemed suitable and effective for improving the students’ interest in and proficiency in the Arabic language. Abstract

The ability to write speech texts is one of the essential competencies that students are expected to master in Indonesian language learning.  However, students’ writing skills in this area remain relatively low due to difficulties in developing ideas, organizing the structure of speech texts, and applying appropriate linguistic conventions.  This study aims to examine the effect of the Auditory, Intellectually, and Repetition (AIR) learning model assisted by the Satu Persen Spotify Podcast on the speech-text writing skills of tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 4 Tambun Selatan.  This research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design.  The research sample consisted of 42 students in the experimental class and 40 students in the control class, selected through purposive sampling.  The research instrument was a speech-text writing test that had been validated by experts.  Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including the normality test, homogeneity test, paired-samples t-test, independent-samples t-test, and N-Gain analysis with IBM SPSS Statistics 27.  The results indicated that the mean posttest score of the experimental class was higher than that of the control class.  The independent-samples t-test yielded a value of t = –4. 067 with Sig.  (2-tailed) < 0. 001 (p < 0. 05), indicating a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups.  Furthermore, the N-Gain analysis showed that the mean improvement in the experimental class was 0. 6525, which was higher than that of the control class (0. 4995).  Based on Hake’s (1999) classification, both groups were categorized as having a moderate level of improvement; however, the experimental class demonstrated greater learning gains.  The mean posttest score of the experimental class was 87. 81, compared to 82. 10 in the control class.  Therefore, it can be concluded that the AIR learning model assisted by the Satu Persen Spotify Podcast has a significant positive effect on the speech-text writing skills of tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 4 Tambun Selatan.   Keywords: AIR learning model; Spotify podcast; speech-text writing; Indonesian language.
