Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Balikpapan Bay, situated in the rapidly evolving Nusantara Capital Region, is significantly susceptible to alterations in freshwater influx resulting from dam construction and the reduction of river discharge. This study utilizes the three-dimensional baroclinic Hamburg Shelf Ocean Model (HAMSOM) to simulate hydrodynamics, temperature, and salinity across various river discharge scenarios. Model validation shows that the model is good enough at capturing the bay's physical processes. The RMSE values are 0.1 m for sea level, 0.1 m/s for current speed, 0.67 psu for salinity, and 1.41°C for temperature. The correlation coefficients are between 0.85 and 0.99. Then, the 50% decrease in discharge raises salinity levels throughout the estuaries. Then a 95% decrease of river discharge leads to long-lasting saline intrusion levels of 34–36 psu. This effect was observed even in areas that are typically dominated by freshwater. The spatial analysis shows that when there is less flow, the system changes to a state where tides are more dominated and marine intrusion is more common. As a result, the influence of freshwater diminishes. These results show how important it is to keep the river discharge at the right level to keep the estuarine balance. They also show how important it is to manage water resources in a way that considers rapid regional growth for environmental sustainability.

Abstract

Carbonate rock petrography is an important approach for reconstructing climate change and sea-level fluctuations throughout geological time. This study aims to review carbonatepetrographic characteristics that can be used as indicators of climate change and sea-level fluctuations, the methodological approaches applied in paleoenvironmental interpretation, andthe limitations of their application. A systematic literature review was conducted on scientific publications addressing carbonate petrography, climate change, paleoclimate, sea level, microfacies, diagenesis, isotope geochemistry, and sequence stratigraphy. The review shows that petrographic indicators of climate change include mineralogical composition, clay mineral assemblages, fossil content and biotic assemblages, textural characteristics, and diagenetic features. Sea-level fluctuations can be reconstructed through changes in microfacies and depositional depth, transgressive-regressive patterns, carbonate platform architecture, and variations in carbon and oxygen isotopes. The most reliable interpretations are obtained by integrating petrographic analysis with geochemical data, including stable isotopes, trace elements, XRD, XRF, and other advanced analytical techniques. However, several challenges remain, particularly diagenetic overprinting, seasonal and environmental biases, and the difficulty of distinguishing climatic signals from tectonic influences. Therefore, the integration of multi-proxy approaches and rigorous assessment of preservation conditions is essential for improving the reliability of carbonate rocks as geological archives of climate and sea-levelchange.

Abstract

Tropical Cyclone (TC) Senyar, which formed over the Strait of Malacca in late November 2025, represents a relatively rare meteorological phenomenon in the near-equatorial region. Its strong wind field and low central pressure had the potential to generate a rise in sea level (storm surge) along the northern coast of Sumatra. This study aims to quantify the storm surge contribution associated with TC Senyar using the Advanced Circulation (ADCIRC) hydrodynamic model over a domain spanning 95–105°E and 0–8°N. Simulations were conducted from 22 November to 2 December 2025, incorporating a two-day ramp-up period to gradually increase the meteorological forcing. Two scenarios were simulated: the total sea level, influenced by tides, wind, and atmospheric pressure; and the tidal sea level, influenced solely by tidal boundary conditions. The unstructured computational mesh was generated using OceanMesh2D at a resolution of 2.5–50km, based on GEBCO 2025 bathymetry and GSHHS coastline data. Meteorological forcing (wind and atmospheric pressure) was obtained from ERA5, while tidal boundary conditions were derived from TPXO10. Storm surge was computed using the residual method, in which the tidal sea level was subtracted from the total sea level, and was analyzed at four stations: Lhokseumawe, Idi Rayeuk, Belawan, and Kuala Tanjung. The results show maximum residual storm surge values of 0.06 m, 0.12 m, 0.18 m, and 0.17m, respectively, with peaks occurring between 25 and 27 November 2025. The largest storm surge amplification, exceeding 0.25m, occurred along the coast of the Malay Peninsula and the southern part of the Strait of Malacca.
