Abstract

Despite Indonesia’s coal output surpassing 775 million tons in 2023, contractors continue to face inefficiencies due to low equipment utilization, inconsistent operator discipline, and weak digital integration. This study examines The Transformer Project, a collaboration between PT XYZ and PT United Tractors, combining Prodigy (real-time monitoring system) and Coretana (competency-based training) to enhance Komatsu PC1250 excavator performance. A sequential explanatory mixed-method approach was employed: FGDs and root cause analysis, a TAM survey validated through SEM, and KPI-based performance measurement. Results indicate weak explanatory power of TAM (R² = 5.6%), yet the interventions achieved substantial operational improvements: productivity increased by 47%, idle time decreased by 15%, fuel efficiency improved by 10%, and operator competency rose by 19%. The findings suggest that in capital-intensive industries, technology adoption is shaped more by organizational enforcement and KPI-driven incentives rather than individual perception, highlighting the need for extended adoption models.

Abstract

Engine overheating is a critical issue that reduces the performance and lifespan of heavy-duty trucks. At PT ABC, Tenggarong, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, the Scania P410 fleet experienced recurring overheating, leading to reduced reliability, increased downtime, and higher maintenance costs. This study applies the Six Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) framework to identify root causes and propose improvements. Data were obtained from operational records, maintenance logs, and field observations. Root cause analysis using Fishbone Diagram and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) revealed inadequate preventive maintenance, inefficient cooling systems, and poor operating practices as the main contributors. Kaizen-based improvements, including enhanced maintenance scheduling, standardized cooling inspections, and operator training, were implemented. As a result, overheating incidents decreased significantly, maintenance costs were reduced, and engine life was extended. The findings confirm that structured problem-solving methods are effective in improving technical reliability in the heavy equipment sector.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of mechanical competency development through training and certification on the performance of mechanics at PT XYZ, a nationwide heavy equipment distributor. The main issue lies in the high failure rate of certification exams, particularly in theory, caused by a misalignment between training materials and exam requirements. This mismatch reduces certification success rates, prolongs job completion times (lead time), and increases operational costs. Adopting a quantitative research design, the study utilizes surveys, SAP system data, and multiple regression analysis to examine the relationships among training, certification, work experience, and performance. Findings reveal that certification exerts a stronger influence than training alone, particularly in reducing lead time. Certified mechanics work faster, more accurately, and more efficiently. Moreover, work experience and task repetition significantly enhance performance. Therefore, an effective mechanic development strategy should integrate structured training, certification, and hands-on exposure to improve competency, lower costs, and boost productivity and customer satisfaction.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of establishing a localized service point on after-sales performance in the mining sector. A case study was conducted at PT XYZ in Tenggarong, which faced issues with low On-Time In-Full (OTIF) delivery (~83%), far below the corporate target of 90%. As a result, PT XYZ captured only about 50% of PT PKSM’s spare parts sales potential. Using a mixed-method approach (DMAIC, customer satisfaction survey, IRR/NPV analysis), the findings show that developing a local service point can improve OTIF to ~95%, reduce downtime by more than 70%, increase customer satisfaction scores (from 2.8 to 4.3 on a 5-point Likert scale), and raise annual revenue by up to 74% (IDR 24 billion). Financial analysis confirms feasibility, with an IRR of ~75% and positive NPV even under pessimistic scenarios. Thus, a localized support point is proven to be both feasible and strategic for enhancing service performance and strengthening market position.

Abstract

This research addresses the suboptimal physical availability (PA) of the PC2000-8 Super Big Digger at PT ABC, a major mining contractor in partnership with PT United Tractors. From January to June 2024, the average PA was only 87.04%, below the target of 92%, posing operational risks and reducing stakeholder confidence. The study applied the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) Six Sigma methodology to examine six key maintenance indicators: Periodical Service Achievement, Lead Time Accuracy, Hour Meter Accuracy, Periodical Service Accuracy, Backlog Execution Lead Time, and Start Time Accuracy. Analytical tools such as Fishbone Diagram and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) were used to identify root causes. The analysis revealed high Risk Priority Numbers (RPNs) in the lubrication, air conditioning, and sensor systems. Improvements were implemented through grease injector upgrades, AC component modifications, and enhanced maintenance coordination. Results showed significant improvements in Mean Time to Repair (MTTR), reduced from 4 hours to 1.69 hours, and an increase in PA from 87.04% to 93.77% by July 2025. This study demonstrates that a structured, data-driven DMAIC approach can effectively improve mining equipment reliability and sustain operational performance.
