Abstract

This study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of mujannib in fostering religious practices and learning discipline among students (santri) at Pesantren As-Sakinah Yogyakarta. The research problem focuses on how the mujannib system, as a peer-mentoring mechanism, contributes to shaping students’ religious character and discipline within the pesantren environment. Conceptually, this study occupies a significant position in Islamic education research because it reveals the dynamics of character formation based on role modeling and peer tutoring area that remains understudied, particularly in modern pesantren. This study employs a qualitative approach with data collected through observations, interviews, and documentation involving three groups of informants: mujannib, junior santri, and musyrif. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data collection, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that mujannib play a crucial role as role models and as intermediaries between musyrif and junior santri in religious activities and study discipline. The implementation of the mujannib role is reflected in activities such as leading nightly prayers, guiding congregational prayer, and supervising evening study sessions. Supporting factors include strong support from musyrif, solidarity among mujannib, and the pesantren’s religious environment. Meanwhile, the obstacles encountered involve limited time, differences in students’ personalities, and the dual dilemma of being both a peer and a mentor.

Abstract

This research investigates the significance of the nazam (rhythmic poetry) tradition as a distinctive literary characteristic of the Fatimah Al-Batul Student Islamic Boarding School in Pekalongan, and explores the strategies used by the school to maintain its appeal in the digital era. Pesantren literature, combining religious values, local culture, and Islamic knowledge often featuring moral and Sufistic teachings is crucial. Here, Nadhom serves as the primary pedagogical tool for memorizing and comprehending religious texts like tauhid and Arabic grammar. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method with a functional discourse analysis approach, data was collected through non participant observation and in-depth interviews with a kyai and four selected informants, focusing on the routine practice of lalaran (collective rhythmic recitation) of classical books. The findings demonstrate that nazam is vital, not only making memorization easier and more enjoyable but also establishing a unique cultural identity for the pesantren. To counter the challenge of students finding classical nazam language difficult, the pesantren employs strategies that include teaching it using everyday language, especially Jawa Pegon, and linking it to contemporary issues; integrating it into art by accompanying it with rebana or local songs during events; and leveraging social media for content, quotes, and documentation. These efforts successfully ensure that Islamic teachings are perceived as beautiful and dynamic, preserving the tradition within the students spiritua llives.

Abstract

Studies on teacher ethics based on the Qur'an and Hadith tend to be thematic-descriptive without analyzing classical scholars' istinbath methods. This research hermeneutically analyzes teacher ethics through Adabul ‘Alim by Imam An-Nawawi to identify referenced texts, analyze istinbath methods, reconstruct ethical structures, and assess relevance for contemporary Islamic education. Qualitative library research with hermeneutical approach was employed through textual analysis, argumentative structure analysis, hermeneutical analysis, and conceptual synthesis of Adabul ‘Alim. Findings show An-Nawawi referenced four Qur'anic verses and five hadiths with layered istinbath patterns (norm-warning-praxis) characteristic of Shafi'i methodology. This study reconstructs four hierarchical transformative ethical dimensions: spiritual-intentional (foundation), epistemic-academic (scholarly integrity), relational-pedagogical (humanization), and transformative-social (agent of change). This framework is relevant for strengthening teacher professionalism, academic integrity, and educators' transformative roles in contemporary Islamic education.
