Linguistika Kultura is a journal by English Study Program, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Andalas, Padang. It is a double blind review journal that is peer reviewed and open access. The journal seeks to become an open access publishing platform that publishes and disseminates concepts and research findings related to language and literature beginning in 2021. Articles from this journal may be downloaded, copied, distributed, printed, and used in any legal way following the lisence used in this journal. Languages, linguistics, literary studies, and cultural linguistics are just a few of the fields that the journal is open to submissions. The goal is to publish the findings of theoretical and critical study of language and literature, conceptual thinking, ideas, innovation, and book reviews written either in English or Indonesian. The journal will be released twice a year, in June and December. From 2007 to 2020, the issues were published in printed version and start to published in electronic version since 2021.

Abstract

Artikel ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan perkembangan sastra Thailand secara sederhana mulai dari lahirnya sampai era sekarang. Artikel ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik kajian pustaka. Kajian pustaka merupakan kajian untuk mendapatkan pendapat para ahli terdahulu mengenai topik yang berkaitan dengan penelitian yang dijalankan, khususnya pembagian era sastra Thailand melalui buku1 atau artikel. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pembagian Era Sastra Thailand dimulai dengan ditemukannya aksara Thai pada prasasti batu, yang merupakan sastra tertua dari Thailand. Sastra Thailand dibagi menjadi 4 periode: Periode Sukhothai (1257-1377), Periode Ayutthaya (1350-1767), Periode Thonburi (1767-1782) dan Periode Rattanakosin (1782-1925). Periode-periode tersebut melahirkan sejumlah karya sastra terkenal mulai dari zaman awal sastra Thailand sampai hingga saat ini.

Abstract

The success of films adapted from literary works, including children's books in captivating audiences and dominating international cinema motivates this article. As a result, it is critical to comprehend how The Theory of Adaptation is applied to adapt literary works into the visual framework of the film. According to certain adaptation models given by experts, adaptation of a literary work such as a children's book into film can be done in two ways: first, by focusing on fidelity to the source, and second, by taking the source's contextuality and intertextuality into account.

Abstract

This research seeks to explain why Holden believes everyone is a liar, why conflicts emerge between novel characters, and how rivalry affects the characters in J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. All these things caused the main character in the novel to alienate himself from society, and this conflict forced him to suffer from depression and be hospitalized. This journal study uses a descriptive qualitative method approach. The main character suffers from an imbalanced mental life. Therefore, this study will answer the question of Holden's means of phoniness, based on his view as 1.) Holden's protection of innocence, 2.) Holden's hatred for the phoniness of the adult world, and 3.) Holden's isolation as a result of his self-protection from the phoniness world. Abstract

This study analyzes the theme of heroism in the novel The Last One by Alexandra Oliva. The study will focus on the main character and her journey to survival. The writer applies a qualitative research method in writing this study. In the analysis, the writer applies the Monomyth Cycle/Hero's Journey theory proposed by Joseph Campbell to analyze the story. The study determined whether the main character was considered a hero. The finding shows that the main character of The Last One novel went through all the stages of the hero’s journey, which made her a hero character.

Abstract

Penggulingan rezim sering terjadi diwilayah Arab pada abad ke-21, misalnya revolusi di Aljazair (Houari Boumedinne), Tunisia (Ben Ali), Libya (Muammar Khadafi), Yaman (Ali Abdullah Saleh) dan Mesir (Husni Mubarak). Negara-negara Arab, seperti Mesir, masih memiliki sistem dan budaya politik yang jauh dari nilai-nilai demokrasi. Mesir masih mempertahankan corak politik tradisional dan kerajaan dengan kekuasaan mutlak di tangan penguasa. Penulis Alaa Al Aswany mengkritisi Mesir melalui karya Apartemen Yacoubian: Kecamuk Cinta di Bumi Seribu Menara (Apartemen Yacoubian). Dia menuliskan kekecewaan publik yang selama puluhan tahun dikekang oleh rezim Husni Mubarak. Akumulasi kekecewaan di Mesir paralel dengan kritis politik yang terjadi di negara tetangga lainnya, seperti Tunisia sehingga rakyat Mesir menemukan waktu yang tepat untuk melakukan revolusi untuk penggulingan rezim Mubarak dengan meluapnya Gerakan Ikhwanul Muslimin. Alaa Al Aswani menyajikan revolusi mesir yang cukup keras dan menimbulkan konflik yang panjang hingga runtuhnya rezim Husni Mubarak.

Abstract

This article aims to uncover the emergence of various streams of Arabic literature during the Al-Nahda period along with the phenomena that underlie it. This research is a literature review study that uses descriptive analysis methods. The results of this research indicate that the revival of Arabic literature from its decline marks the beginning of the modern period. The turning point occurred when Napoleon Bonaparte's expansion reached Egypt in 1798, providing Egypt with the opportunity to come into contact with Western culture. One of the impacts of this meeting is on the development of Arabic literature. The development of Arabic literature is inseparable from this phenomenon, certainly with characteristics and traits that distinguish it. Arabic literature underwent a transformation that distinguishes it from previous periods. In the Modern phase, various movements emerged in Arabic literature in succession. The emergence of this movement is due to criticisms of the literary models that came before it or to refine the movements that emerged in earlier times. This article will focus on three movements: Neo-Classical, Romanticism, and Realism.

Abstract

This article analyzes how Langston Hughes significantly impacted the development of African American literature during the Harlem Renaissance. Hughes, as one of the centers of the New Negro movement, fought for their freedom through his work in literature. The author adopts a socio-historical approach along with African American literary criticism to review the events that took place during the 1920s. The author discusses how Hughes enlightened other Black African-American writers, such as Maya Angelou and Amiri Baraka, to express freedom through their literary works. The writer found that Hughes inspired them by using everyday language and incorporating elements of blues and jazz into his work, making it accessible to the public.

Abstract

Little Women karya Louisa May Alcott merupakan sebuah novel klasik yang mengeksplorasi perjalanan empat bersaudari March dari masa kanak-kanak hingga dewasa. Novel ini tidak hanya memaparkan petualangan yang seru tetapi juga mengangkat tema-tema moralitas dan nilai-nilai keluarga. Melalui karakter-karakternya yang unik, Alcott menggambarkan kompleksitas dinamika keluarga pada abad ke-19, di mana para saudari ini harus menghadapi norma-norma masyarakat yang membatasi peran mereka. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan feminis dengan fokus kepada konsep keluarga, kerja keras dan pengorbanan. Fokus pada pentingnya keluarga, novel ini mengilustrasikan bagaimana interaksi antar saudari, dampak norma-norma masyarakat, dan nilai-nilai keluarga menjadi elemen kunci dalam penceritaan. Pada lapisan yang lebih dalam, tema kerja keras dan tantangan yang dihadapi perempuan pada masa itu tercermin dalam karakter Jo, yang mengejar cita-citanya dengan tekad dan pengorbanan diri. Secara keseluruhan, Little Women tidak hanya menjadi karya sastra yang abadi dan dicintai oleh pembaca muda di seluruh dunia, tetapi juga menginspirasi melalui pesan-pesan universalnya tentang keluarga, kerja keras, dan pengorbanan diri.

Abstract

Cinta merupakan anugerah paling sempurna yang diberikan Tuhan kepada setiap makhluk hidup, khususnya manusia. Setiap jiwa pasti pernah merasakan cinta dan kasih sayang terhadap satu sama lain sebagai manusia. Sejak manusia dilahirkan ke dunia ini, kita diberikan kesempatan untuk menjalani kehidupan dengan penuh harapan akan cinta yang mengelilinginya. Ini merupakan sebuah fakta bahwasannya tindakan kemanusiaan kita, seperti yang telah dikemukakan sebelumnya antara cinta dan kesetiaan, juga dapat dituangkan dalam sebuah karya sastra. Artikel ini menganalisa bagaimana Landon, seorang tokoh utama laki-laki, bersikap dan bertindak terhadap seseorang yang dicintainya dalam novel yang berjudul A Walk to Remember karya Nicholas Sparks, sebagai hasil dari inspirasinya terhadap seorang wanita yang menderita kanker darah, dirawat sepenuhnya dengan penuh cinta, kasih sayang, dan kesetiaan oleh suaminya hingga maut memisahkan mereka. Dalam novel tersebut terungkap bahwa Landon digambarkan sebagai pria paling setia yang pernah ada.

Abstract

This study aims to explain why "Harry Potter" can be considered one of the best book series ever made. There is much debate on why literature and movie fans love "Harry Potter." This essay will analyze and describe a few important reasons for that topic. To answer this question, I used descriptive analysis to describe and analyze the reasons. My result describes a few things that can be the reason this book series can be one of the best book series ever made. For a few reasons, "Harry Potter" is detailed and full of content that makes readers enjoy reading it. Also, "Harry Potter" has some impact on people worldwide that can influence people's lives. The reasons in this essay informed people and gave people answers to why "Harry Potter" is considered one of the best book series ever made.
