Abstract

This study focuses on the discussion of the novel Persuasion, written by Jane Austen and published in 1817. This novel tells the story of Anne Elliot, whose family and godmother persuaded her to break off her engagement with Captain Wentworth because he is not a noble nor has wealth, which is why he is not suitable for Anne, who is a noble. The social class in the Regency period affected the upper class and the lower class, whether in economy, wealth, or social standing. The author uses a Historical biographical approach to relate the period and the author's life with the novel. The author uses a qualitative method to describe the findings. At the end of the study, the author finds that (1) The upper class had many scandals and did not care about the problems of the lower class, and (2) Marriage is considered to maintain the economy and social stability for women. (3) Naval soldiers were treated politely after gaining wealth and social status. (4) Austen's life and values influence the plot and character of the novel. The findings conclude that the novel Persuasion reflects how society in the Regency period saw people by their wealth and gender.

Abstract

This study aims to compare two works in different mediums: a novel titled Little Women, authored by Louisa May Alcott in 1868, and its film adaptation of the same title, directed by Greta Gerwig in 2019. This study explores how Greta Gerwig transformed gender roles and femininity in Little Women’s novel into a film version. This study employs the fidelity theory offered by James M. Welsh and the adaptation theory proposed by Linda Hutcheon. Qualitative analysis and library research are used as research methods in this study. The results revealed that the gender roles in the film adaptation had been portrayed with some changes, to focus more on their struggles to obtain their dreams and less romantic portrayal. The writers argue that femininity in the novel is depicted with a more modern sense of femininity and more aligned with modern feminist ideas.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the motives for neglect and failure of family communication that trigger the main conflict in the novel “Everything I Never Told You” written by Celeste Ng by analyzing the characterization of each character in the novel. In order to achieve this, this research employs a new criticism approach. The descriptive qualitative method was chosen as the research method in this study to characterize and interpret data. The primary data source, the novel “Everything I Never Told You”, is where the writer gathered the dialogues, words, and sentences. Additional supporting data from journals and articles are also used to strengthen the data. The main problem of this research can be seen from the development of plot, each characters’ characterization, and some symbolisms that appear in the novel. The plot is formed by going back and forth, showing how problems form and occur in the novel. The characterization of each character shows why an action is taken, and explains why the main conflict can occur between the characters. The symbolism that the author expresses several times strengthens the main problem found.

Abstract

This paper explores the use of speech acts in the movie, The Road. Speech acts are actions that are performed by human utterances. Speech acts include things like requesting, apologizing, promising, and other utterances that humans do that resemble an action. Based on Searle’s classification of speech acts, there are five classes of speech acts: assertive, directive, expressive, commissive and declaration. The paper analyzed speech acts in the film’s dialogue and classify them into Searle's speech acts theory. The paper shows most of the speech acts categories are included in The Road’s dialogue except for declaration. The analysis shows that the movie includes most of these types: characters make statements and give information (assertive), give commands, warning, ask questions (Directive), express emotions and feelings (expressive), and make promises, threats and vow (commissive). The absence of declaration in the movie happens because the setting of the movie is in a post-apocalyptic world where there is no authority figure that can make change to the world, making the speech act of declaration is almost impossible. Overall, the study reveals the function and the importance of speech acts in movie dialogue.

Abstract

This article discussed the pronunciation errors of English fricative consonants made by English Literature students of the 2019 at Universitas Andalas, as found in their thesis presentation videos. The aim of this thesis is to identify the types of pronunciation errors and analyze their causes by comparing the sound systems of English and Bahasa Indonesia. The research begins by selecting 20 students’ presentation videos as the data source. The focus is on English fricative consonants, specifically the sounds [f], [v], [θ, [ð], [s], [z], [ʃ], and [ʒ]. These sounds are transcribed from the videos and carefully analyzed. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, where the researcher applied contrastive analysis to understand the factors causing errors in pronunciation, including the influence of mother tongue interference and lack of knowledge of English. The theories used in this research were taken from April McMahon’s (2002) book entitled An Introduction to English Phonology, which is supported by the book Second Language Acquisition: An Introductory Course from Gass & Selinker (2008), and the book from Gut (2009) entitled Introduction to English Phonetics and Phonology, which help in understanding how second language learners acquire and pronounce unfamiliar sounds. Through this process, the researcher found that many students substitute fricative sounds with incorrect ones, especially [θ], [ð], [ʒ], and [ʃ]. The dominant type of pronunciation error is misformation error, where the students replace correct fricative sounds with native language alternatives. These errors were caused by interlingual transfer and intralingual transfer

Abstract

With the advancement of electronic devices, life has become easier and much quicker. However, overuse of internet-assisted applications and tools as well as online platforms can harm one's physical, mental, and social health by increasing anxiety, depression, and isolation. The current study examines how digital disturbance affects students' mental, social, and physical well-being and informs of how to mitigate those detrimental impacts, thereby enhancing productivity, broadening skills, and improving academic achievements. This qualitative study employed semi-structured interviews to gather information from ten students in grade 11 and 5 parents at the Sri Lankan International School, Riyadh. The findings of the study were analyzed using the Thematic Analysis (TA) framework. The results indicated that the increasing reliance on digital devices has led to a range of negative consequences for students' physical, social, and mental health, which in turn significantly affects their academic performance. These adverse effects are evident in various academic challenges, including reduced academic quality, increased workloads, absenteeism, boredom, poor organization, difficulties in understanding educational tasks, inadequate preparation, and ultimately, low learning achievement. Students' screen time is largely increasing as a result of the pressure on teachers to incorporate technology into the majority of their lessons. The findings point to the need to reduce students’ screen time as well as the harmful effects. This study has raised awareness of the detriments of utilizing digital devices in the classroom and made recommendations on how to integrate them more successfully into the personal and academic lives of students. The study has implications for ESL teachers, syllabus designers, and school management.
