Abstract

This study analyzes two works of interactive fiction, Galatea (2000) by Emily Short and De Baron (2006) by Victor Gijsbers, to examine how identity and moral conflicts are constructed within interactive narratives. This study employs discourse analysis, particularly focusing on Stuart Hall’s concept of identity, as well as the principles of positioning and representation in social discourse. A qualitative method with close reading techniques is applied to both texts to explore how characters construct and negotiate their identities in relation to other characters and social expectations. The results indicate that Galatea emphasizes identity issues through a non-linear narrative structure, while De Baron highlights moral conflicts shaped by character positioning and social representation within a linear narrative. These findings suggest that interactive fiction can engage with complex issues of identity and morality in ways comparable to conventional literature.

Abstract

Unfolding Through Layers: A Narratological Analysis of Tense, Mood, and Voice in Where the Crawdads Sing (2018) by Delia Owens examines the narrative structure of the novel through Gérard Genette’s narratological framework. The study aims to identify the narrative tense, mood, and voice and to analyze their implementation in the novel. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study identifies and classifies narrative passages according to Genette’s theory. The findings reveal that the narrative tense in the novel is structured through anachronic order involving analepsis and prolepsis, various narrative durations such as scene, summary, pause, and ellipsis, and multiple frequencies including singulative, repetitive, iterative, and anaphoric. In terms of mood, the narration primarily employs internal focalization while also incorporating zero and external focalization. In terms of voice, the narrative is characterized by subsequent narration, an extradiegetic level, and a heterodiegetic narrator. Through the identification and analysis of the implementation of these narratological elements, the study demonstrates how Owens constructs a layered and non-linear narrative that organizes time (tense), perspective (mood), and narrative stance (voice).

Abstract

Speech errors emerge when linguistic planning at the conceptualization stage fails, resulting in unintended distortions of sound, form, or meaning. The objectives of this research are to identify the types of slips of the tongue, to classify them, and to analyze the factors contributing to their occurrence in the 2025 inauguration speech of Donald Trump. This study employed a descriptive-qualitative methodology, guided by the theoretical frameworks of Fromkin (1973) and Freud (1901). Data collection involved identifying types of the slip in video recordings of Trump’s inauguration speech accessible via the ABC News YouTube channel. This focused with the examination of eight slip types: anticipation, preservation, substitution, blends, additions, deletions, sound exchanges, and morpheme exchanges. The findings reveal that there are six of types of slips of the tongue occurred in Trump’s speech: perseveration (three occurrences), anticipation (two occurrences), substitution (two occurrences), blend (one occurrence), deletion (one occurrence), and addition (five occurrences). Notably, sound exchanges and morpheme exchanges were absent. Addition emerged as the most frequent error type, while blend and deletion were the least frequent. This research significantly advances the understanding of speech errors in high-stakes political communication. It demonstrated that slips of the tongue reflect cognitive load, psychological pressures, and contextual demands inherent to public speaking.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the manifestations of mimicry and ambivalence in Ahmad Tohari's short story Paman Klungsu dan Kuasa Peluitnya (PKKP) through the lens of Homi K. Bhabha's postcolonial theory. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative, focusing on literary discourse as a documentation of colonial traces. The results indicate that the character Paman Klungsu engages in mimicry by adopting attributes of power, such as the "Poltas Swakarsa" vest and a whistle, to gain authority in public spaces. However, these actions create ambivalence; while he feels authoritative, he simultaneously experiences a split identity when confronted with local values represented by the character Yu Binah. The study concludes that the imitation performed by the colonized subject never achieves perfect mimicry of the original, and power often remains attached to physical attributes rather than the subject.

Abstract

Parent – children relationship plays an important role in a child’s personality. This article elaborates the impacts of parental neglect on a child as reflected in Lionel Shriver’s novel We Need to Talk About Kevin. The research applies psychoanalytic literary criticism, utilizing Sigmund Freud’s theory of human psyche (id, ego, and superego) and Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development. The data are collected by using library research method, taking description, narrative and dialogue in the novel related with parental neglect and its effect as primary data, by focusing on the characters of Eva, the mother, and Kevin, the son. Descriptive analysis method is applied in analyzing the data. The result of analysis shows that Eva’s maternal ambivalence reflects her inner conflict between personal freedom and parental responsibility, while her emotional alienation from Kevin represents her fear of intimacy in forming a secure bond with her own child. Eva’s emotional neglect affects Kevin’s psychosocial development negatively in the first five stages, resulting him to develop a psychological impairment and behavioral problems, marked by destructive and manipulative behavior. Through this novel, readers can learn how parental neglect can deeply affects a child’s growth, underlining the importance of a secure emotional relationship between caregivers and the children.
