Abstract

This research is about students who have some problems in speaking English. This research was conducted at the Vocational High School Al-inayah Tebo. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that influence students’ difficulties in learning English skills. The design of this research used qualitative descriptive method. The subjects of this research were students and teachers of eleventh grade at the Vocational High School Al-inayah Tebo. The research data were collected using observation and interviews. The result showed that students experienced several problems that were influenced by their psychological factors in speaking English, such as : Lack of motivation, Anxiety, Lack of confidence, Shyness, Fear of making mistake, Learning environment Factors, Performance condition factors. From these problems, the most dominant factor was fear of making mistakes. Most of the students stated that they were afraid to speak because they could not pronounce it. Most of them are afraid if they make mistake so they better not speak English.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out morphological errors made by students of SMP Negeri 18 Batanghari in writing recount text. This is descriptive qualitative research, the data were collected by documentation and analysed by Surface Strategy Taxonomy. This research revaled that there are four types of errors with the total number 58 errors made by the students in writing recount text. Omission error which consists of three categories of omission errors i.e. omission of plural, auxiliary verb, gerund, with the total number of errors are 8 or 13,56%, addition error includes four categories of addition errors i.e. addition of gerund, plural, pronoun, noun, with the total number of errors are 8 or 13,56%, misformation error that consist of misformation error of tense with the total number of errors are 38 or 66,10%, and the last misordering error that consist of misordering of spelling with the total number of errors are 4 or 6,78%.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the implementation of the English summative test for the twelfth- grade students at SMAN 4 Tebo from the students‟ and English teacher‟s perception. This paper attempts to display several impacts of English summative test to the students. This was a descriptive qualitative study where the researchers conducted an in-depth interview and distributed questionnaires to gather the data. Participants in this study were an English teacher and several twelfth-grade students. There were positive and negative washback from the analysis of teacher's perceptions and students' perceptions about summative tests. It can be concluded that the test only helps the students to pass the English summative test which was considered as a negative washback. Furthermore, the process of teaching which was oriented to achieve the four language skills stated incompetence was constituted as positive washback.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the strategies used by English teachers in teaching reading comprehension and how they apply these strategies. This research was designed as descriptive qualitative research. The research was conducted at SMAN 02 Muaro Jambi. The participants of this research were three English teachers who taught in the tenth (X) MIPA grade of the school. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic so, each English teachers had two meetings observed by the researcher. The research instrument is an observation and interview. The instrument used is to find out the strategies used and how the English teachers applies the strategies in teaching reading comprehension. The results of the data were analyzed by; checklist observations and field notes. The results showed that the teacher used several strategies in teaching reading comprehension. The strategies are Translation strategy, Scaffolding strategy, and Question and Answer Relationship Strategy. Encourage the use of dictionaries, rereading to assess comprehension, understanding in certain tasks, and asking questions for specific information strategies applied in implementing reading comprehension in the school. This is evidenced by the motivation of students, students’ attention, and the ease of teachers in teaching and learning process

Abstract

The objectives of this study is to analyze the movie by using Sigmund Freud Theory. This study aims to find out the inner conflict or Psychological aspects of the main character’s, Suleyman in the movie “Ayla the Daughter of War”. This study used descriptive method. The data were collected through utterances of major character which indicates inner conflict. The results show that there are 15 Id, and 17 Superego. In this movie, Suleyman’s character is dominated by Superego, and The ego on the Suleyman character as a determinant of the Superego and Id. In accordance with the findings, the writers would like to suggest to further writers in choosing the movie which has the characters that suitable for the theory of psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the reading interest of class VIII SMP Negeri in Jambi City. This research uses survey research method. Sampling in this study using cluster sampling technique. The number of samples in this study were 100 students from 2 well-known schools in Jambi City they are SMPN 1and SMPN 6 Jambi city. In this study, they were asked to fill out a questionnaire regarding students' reading interest as a research instrument. The data analysis technique used is descriptive analysis with quantitative data. The results showed that the reading interest of class VIII Junior High School in Jambi city was in the high category, namely 74.55%. This means that most students in the city of Jambi have a fairly high demand for reading, especially reading knowledge books.
