Abstract

Oral communication skill is the ability to receive and process the information (listening) and then respond and produce language (speaking) for which the messages delivered across and communication can run successfully. To most Indonesian students, speaking and listening English as can be challenging. Many factors influence how well someone can communicate orally in English, for instance: physical tools (ear and mouth), vocabulary mastery, grammatical knowledge, spoken discourse, and so forth. Therefore, I propose one technique namely “Three-Minute Descriptive Speech” which is executed during preteaching session to the students of The State Institute for Islamic Studies Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin (IAIN STS) Jambi. The qualitative data taken from twenty-seven students through openquestionnaires were analyzed. I found that the application of the technique gave benefits to the students, such as raising confidence, increasing motivation, and enhancing their oral communication skill. Keywords: Descriptive Speech, Speaking Skill, Oral Communication, Feedback

Abstract

Teaching writing in English as a foreign language to Indonesian students is truly essential. Through writing, students can express their feeling, idea, and also their knowledge in the visual demonstration. Infact, writing interest of the senior high school students in Indonesia is low. That problem might be caused by many reasons from both the teacher and students aspects. This paper is proposing one technique in teaching text writing that is Learner-Based Teaching [a technique in teaching English which has main principle that all class activities can be done using information that the learners themselves bring to the class]. Analyzing the examples of Learner-Based Teaching classroom activities we can conclude that Learner-Based Teaching is advantageous in increasing the students’ writing ability not only for the students but also for the teacher in term of motivation, effectiveness of Teaching-Learning activities, and relations among all.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the critical preparations necessary for fresh graduates to effectively engage in a professional teacher program, focusing on identifying specific challenges and enablers within this process. Employing a case study design, this research leverages qualitative interviews to capture in-depth perspectives from participants, enabling a nuanced exploration of the complexities involved in preparing for professional teacher programs. The research involved interviewing six professional teachers, including three who have participated in the in-service Professional Teacher Program (PPG) and three who have undergone the pre-service PPG. These teachers represent five different districts, which enhances the validity and generalizability of the findings. The selected participants are educators who have completed their professional teaching certification within the past three years, ensuring that the insights gained are current and relevant. The research identified six major themes: infrastructure challenges, health considerations, family support, technology mastery, financial constraints, and teacher qualifications. These themes emerged from the interviews and reflect the diverse experiences and obstacles faced by teachers in preparing for and undergoing professional development. This study provides actionable insights and can also inform the refinement of strategies for both preparation and development of targeted support systems for prospective teachers, which ultimately enhance the effectiveness of professional teacher programs for the present and the future. This study provides information that education with a well-planned and effective system can encourage better student quality and ability.

Abstract

This research aims to discover third-semester students' perceptions of integrated learning in speaking skills implemented during the previous two semesters at the English Education Study Programme at the State Islamic University of Malaysia. The Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi University. The researcher carried out a qualitative investigation. Through interviews, information is collected. The researcher employed a technique of purposive sampling by selecting 10 students from each third-semester class based on information gleaned from their classmates and previous grades. This research included 30 participants. 15 open-ended questions were developed based on Schiffman and Kanuk's (2004) theory, the CAC model, which incorporates cognitive, affective, and conative components. Positive and negative perceptions of integrated learning in speaking classes over the past two semesters are revealed by the study's findings. Positive perceptions of the cognitive component include the ability to reduce the spread of Covid-19 at the time, the use of technology that is currently being developed in the education world, and the capacity to locate information from a variety of sources. Positive perceptions in the affective component, such as learning, can be achieved at any time and in any location. Nonetheless, there are negative perceptions, such as in the cognitive component, due to the lecturer's material being indistinct and the students' pronunciation being difficult to understand due to the poor internet connection. While the negative perception of the affective component is that students cannot manage their time between an online and offline discussion of the next topic, this is not the case. In contrast, the conative component focuses on the absence of interaction between new students and the content of online classes. In fact, some of the difficulties they encountered during the previous two semesters included a poor internet connection, the absence of an internet bundle on campus, and the separation of online and offline instruction.
