Presupposition is one of phenomena in pragmatics. Before expressing their thoughts, the speakers have an assumption in their mind. This pragmatic study set out to scrutinize the kinds of presupposition in Raya and the Last Dragon movie as well as to interpret the meaning of the presupposition. Under the umbrella of descriptive qualitative method, the data were originated from Raya and the Last Dragon’s character utterances and were analyzed referring to Yule’s framework on presupposition type (1996) and language context (2006). The findings revealed that the 104 data met all six types of presupposition i.e., existential presupposition (35%), lexical presupposition (20%), factive presupposition (19%), structural presupposition (18%), counterfactual presupposition (7%) and non-factive presupposition (1%). In addition, the result indicated the use of presupposition in cinematic field presenting major descriptions for the existence of objects related to the show. Moreover, meaning of the presuppositions could be interpreted by considering the context. This study contributes to the discussion of language and its intended meaning utilized in cinematic interaction.

Abstract

The use of literature in language learning effectively improves students' language skills. It is because literature consists of various works such as prose, drama, and poetry that can be used as a source of extensive reading material. Therefore, using literary works for learning model trains students’ receptive skills (reading) and their productive skills (speaking). This research aims to investigate students’ views on the use of literature in English learning activities. The participants of this research are 6th semester students of the English language education department at Sekolah Keguruan Ilmu Pendidikan (SKIP) Yayasan Pendidikan Ujung Pandang (YPUP), with a total of 17 participants. To answer the research questions, the researchers used an exploratory case study, which employs qualitative research methods to collect data. The researchers utilized a research instrument called the self-assessment survey. Based on the results of students’ views on literature-based learning model, it shows that using literature in English learning is effective for language skills development. Moreover, the use of literature also provides cultural understanding, which makes students tolerate and respect the diverse cultures of others.

Abstract

One of teacher education goals is to produce interculturally competent educators; teach students in multicultural classrooms and prepare them in an increasingly globalized world. In response to this critical need in teacher preparation, international exchange attempts at developing those competencies. It is in accordance with Walters and Walters' (2009) principle, "Learning globally, teaching locally,". Despite the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic significantly restricted international student mobility over the past two years, many elements of life as it was before the pandemic are now returning. Certain pandemic rules remain in place, but students are now willing to travel abroad. Thus, this study explored the incorporation of international exchange and intercultural learning into seven Indonesian pre‐service teachers who mobilized in the Czech Republic. The data collected in this study were, questionnaires, participant diaries, and semi-structured interviews. The instruments were distributed during and after the program. This study utilized narrative analysis to comprehend the participants' stories. The results showed that through direct interaction with international communities, the participants become more culturally responsive human beings and in particular, as future educators. Future studies need to examine a longitudinal study on how the international experience shapes the participants' careers and ability to develop global consciousness in both objective and subjective metrics.

Abstract

When the goal of English language teaching is categorized as for communication purposes, then it is essential to investigate students’ willingness to communicate (WTC). This research aimed to find out the students’ WTC in the EFL classroom. The researchers conducted descriptive research to compile the findings. The subjects were sixth-semester English Education students at Universitas Negeri Makassar, Indonesia. Purposive sampling was applied to gather data from a sample of 25 students. A questionnaire was used as a research instrument, which consisted of 27 question items, all related to the student's willingness to participate in communication inside the classroom. This research found that the students' WTC were classified into four categories: (1) definitely not willing, (2) probably not willing, (3) probably willing, and (4) definitely willing. Those scales operationalized WTC in four basic skill areas: speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension. It is found that most of the students were in the category of "probably willing" to "definitely willing" to show their WTC in the EFL classroom, which means that they mostly have positive communication behaviors and meet language learning targets. In addition, by measuring and promoting the WTC model in the EFL context, it is possible to better understand how students communicate and learn the language in realworld settings, predict what they will do when they communicate, and enhance how students use language in an EFL context.

Abstract

Self-reflection has been hailed as a potential avenue into work-based learning. However, the purpose of this research is to use self-reflection to improve the reading skills of B2 and C1 students at the CEFR level. This finding is expected to be a reference for the education sector, government, business, and academia in promoting, designing, and implementing self-reflection learning in English reading. Two sets of analyses were performed in this study. To begin, the authors examine the self-reflection of master students enrolled in an English proficiency program. Second, the authors examine the Internet search for selfreflection learning in reading. More specifically, the authors used Google Classroom and web resources to analyse real-world data from a reading self-reflection task of 14 students in reading B2 and C1. Based on the findings from the examination of the identified selfreflection reading task, students still had some difficulties in understanding the context of the reading. Self-reflection has been identified as a key topic in talent development from the point of view of work-based learning. Policymakers, educators, researchers, and participants should investigate ways to encourage, create, and implement microlearning to help individuals learn on the right track through valid knowledge and ethical thinking.

This study was done on November 18th and 25th 2021 in one of the schools in Tangerang. The data were gathered from one English teacher and 78 grade 6 students using classroom observation, document analysis and interview. The results show that there are a number of types of scaffolding found in the learning process. The teacher also implemented good learning media in the online learning process. The problems faced by the 6 Grade English teacher in online learning situation are related to the use of the learning media, the students’ engagement to the learning process, the amount of the students, and the insufficient amount of time given for the teacher in the meeting.

Abstract

Self-directed learning (SDL) refers to practice in the classroom for individual students' English reading comprehension skills over the course of two meetings in this study. The objective of this study is to determine the impact of SDL on English reading comprehension ability and its size, as well as how SDL enhances English reading comprehension ability of 30 students from one of Jakarta's education institutions. An embedded mixed methods design with an embedded experimental model version is used in this work. Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) part gave quantitative data, and the Learning Summary and Evaluation Sheets, as well as instructor reflection, yielded qualitative data. The dependent samples t-test reveals that, on average, the English reading comprehension ability of the subject students before the SDL (M = 12.30, SD = 2.76), and that after the SDL project (M = 13.33, SD = 3.30) is significantly different (p = 0.01). This means that, on average, the English reading comprehension ability of the students in the post-test significantly increases from the pretest. The effect size is 0.34, which means that its magnitude is “medium”. SDL improves reading ability in terms of “increasing awareness of reading strategy use” (53%), “developing learning responsibility and effort” (20%), “providing freedom to learn” (20%), and “building self-confidence to read” (7%). Implications and applications are discussed, and recommendations are provided.
